I attended an all-day looping/adr workshop today.  I’ll admit that after car buying yesterday and working all night last night I was exhausted…but I was glad I was there.  It’s certainly an area of the business I want to learn more about…and a potentially very lucrative area of the business.

Ooops.  I bought a car today.  It’s even more than I expected to get.  It’s a White 2012 Acura TSX w/Navigation and black leather interior.  It’s Acura-certified with just over 10,000 miles on it.  It’s the exact car I wanted. Seriously.  I’ve worked hard and I feel that this is a good move for me.  Now I just have to pay for it…

Audition: “Macy’s” @ Action Casting.  I don’t think I’ve ever auditioned for this company before, but I’m glad I’m here today.  The read was fun and went very well, PLUS I had a great “wife” to work with.

On another note I’m knee-deep in my search for new wheels.  It’s really exciting…and also a bit scary.  I’ve been debt-free for the last several years and I’m literally coming off of my least successful year as a professional actor.  Do I really want to take on debt right now?  Sizable debt?  My net worth will still be positive, but still.  Yeah, I’m ready to take the risk. 

I’m sure about the car: Acura TSX

Not sure about the year: 2010 or 2011.  There are a few upgrades that I like in the 2011 versus the 2010.

I’m sure about the exterior color: White, Metallic, Silver or Black…in that order.

I’m sure about the interior color: Black.  I like the beige, but black will be easier to maintain over the long haul and I have a history of keeping my cars for an average of 9 years.

I’m sure that I want the navigation/tech package.

Lastly, I’m sure that I want it to be a certified car.

I’ve got my financing in place and I’m ready to pull the trigger.  The financing is funny because I was offered the best avail rate from Navy Federal Credit Union.  I’m not sure I believe it.  I say that because my fear of rejection is so deep-seeded that I almost always feel that I’ll be turned down in some form or fashion.  I mean I was surprised that I got the loan; I’m just surprised that I qualified for the best available rate.  Maybe I’m growing up.

Happy Valentine’s Day!  Yeah, right, LOL!  I have no Valentine.  But I decided today that I’m going to be my own Valentine and get myself a newer car.  I plan to get something pretty nice too.  I have no wife, no girlfriend, no children, no debt…I should have a relatively nice car.  Right? 

Don’t get me wrong my current ’98 Honda Accord EX Coupe w/173,217 miles that I bought in ’04 has been nothing short of great, but I’m ready to have something a little nicer for myself.  I’m really excited!

Audition/producers: “The Middle” @ G. Charles Wright Casting.  I felt good about this character as a tennis coach.  I got some redirection in the room, which is sometimes a good sign.

Audition/tape: “Real Husbands of Hollywood” @ Kim Coleman Casting.  This was fun.  I don’t usually get called in for these projects and I don’t think I had met Kim before, but I’m glad I did.

Callback: “Toyota” Ross Lacy Casting.  Great to be in a callback for this one.  I was in the room for a good while doing a bunch of stuff, but I really got the feeling that the director was really auditioning my partner and I was just someone for him to work off of.  Oh well, no problem.  They’re doing multiple spots so maybe something will shake out good for me.

Audition: “Invesco” @ Ross Lacy Casting.  This was a nice test for me.  The spot had a lot of “business”; just stuff going on activity-wise.  Sometimes, in these scenarios I get in my head a bunch and over think it, but I think I handled this one pretty well.

Audition: “cars.com” @ Ross Lacy Casting.  This was fun, nice small subtle work.  I did a cars.com Super Bowl spot 2-3 years ago and I would love to do another one.  I don’t think this one is for the Super Bowl.

Audition/Tape: “Castle” @ Donna Rosenstein Casting.  This one went okay.  I read the material the first time and I think my pacing was off.  So I was given a redirect and my pacing was better but then I kind of went up on a line and then I got to my head. Not good.  That’s weird because I’m using pretty good about that, TV pacing vs film pacing.

Today I attended the first class of my First Draft Writing Class @ On The Page.  Of course I was nervous, but very happy to be there.  The instructor really broke down how screenplays and/or TV scripts are assembled.  I hope I’m able to use what I learn there and finish my first draft.

Okay, here we are at the end of 2012 and it’s officially my worst financial year as an actor.  Yup, the absolutely worst.  Wow.  Ironically it’s also the year that I invested more money than I have in a long time in my career.  Funny how that works.

It would be easy for me to be down, out and depressed about it, but for some reason I’m not.  At all.  I’m not sure why. I think it might be because I honestly think that I’m doing a lot to make things happen. That is something I’m really happy about.  I also think it might have to do with the fact that, since I’ve learned to “pay myself first” I pretty much reached all my savings goals for the year.  That wasn’t easy.  I had to do some cutting back and tightening up to achieve it, but I did it.  So here’s to hoping that 2013 is a much more successful year.

Oh yeah, I’m also starting this 52-week savings plan as well.

So I get in the bed at 6:30 this morning after working last night.  I was hoping to get a few hours of sleep before my apartment property manager was to call at 8:30am to confirm that the plumber was to arrive at 9am to replace my garbage disposal.  I was hoping the plumber would be finished in time for me to give a friend a ride to LAX @ 11:30am.

While I was in a deep, relaxing REM sleep my phone rings @ 8:28 to let me know that, in fact, the plumber would be here at said time.  My sleepy self gets out of bed to make sure everything was clear in the cabinet for the plumber work.   He arrives, sees that the garbage disposal is leaking and fetches a new in his truck.  Shortly after the plumber returns and starts working my phone rings @ 9:28…it’s one of my theatrical agents.  He has an audition appointment that came in late last night for 10:45…in West LA.  I live in West Hollywood.

Ooops.

Without even taking the time to return the call to my agent I washed my face, printed the sides, got dressed, ran lines, put on a tie, ran lines, grabbed my lab coat, and pretty much followed the plumber out the door as he was finishing his work.

Then I called my agent and told him I was already on my way to the casting office.  Right after I hung up I started to feel that I should’ve asked my agent if it was possible for me to come in later in the afternoon after I took my friends to LAX.  I almost called him back, but I decided to just go with it and hope that everything worked out time-wise.  I’ve been dropping off pictures to this casting office for years trying to get auditions and just 3 weeks ago I did a casting director workshop with one of the associates in the office.  Seriously, I wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass.

The traffic cooperated perfectly; odd for LA and the 10 West, and I made it to West LA without any problem at all.  Things went so great that when I was looking for parking an actor that had just auditioned and was walking back to his car offered me his parking spot.  That was very nice of him, and it even had money still left on the parking meter.

I went upstairs to the casting office and there were no actors waiting.  I took a moment to warm up the material and then I was called into the room to read.  I commented on how nice the office was and the associate, Chris, was surprised that I had never been upstairs.  I guess he was surprised that I never actually auditioned at the office…I took that as a good sign.  Then the other associate, Melissa, enter the room and she greeted me warmly as well. I had just met Melissa at a workshop 3 weeks ago.   Chris, I had met back in 2007.

Audition: “Legit” @ Wendy O’Brien Casting.  The audition went really well and I hope I will be the one that they choose for the job. 

Amazing, I finished it all up with time to spare and was able to get back to West Hollywood to pick up my friend at 11:30 without any problem.
