Audition: “Tiger Hunter” @ Emily Schweber Casting.  I got this call about 2 hours before the appointment.  There was some sort of mix up at my agency and as a result I didn’t get the info yesterday.  No worries, I prepared the best I could and gave them what I had.

Audition: “Kayak” @ Francene Selkirk Casting.  I had fun in this audition, but I don’t know if I’d be the guy they’d cast…or even call back.  I will hope for a callback though and another bite at the apple!

Audition: “Olympic Paints” @ Emma Nelson Casting.  This audition went well, although I admittedly wondered if they would actually be casting a mixed race couple since “my wife” in the audition was Caucasian.  I’m seeing more and more mixed couples on TV so maybe…

Nineteen years ago today I arrived in New York City from Virginia Beach, VA…Hell’s Kitchen to be exact…46th & 9th Avenue to be really exact. Good.  Ass.  Times.

Table read: This was so much fun!  A friend of mine, Nicci T. Carr, recommended me to the writer/producer and it was a blast!  I hope it gets produced.

Callback: “Dunkin’ Donuts” @ Spot Casting.  This call was straight to callbacks.  Nice!  I haven’t been to this office in a long time it seems, so it was good to be back.  Unfortunately, I feel like my performance was pretty flat.  I don’t know, maybe it wasn’t, but I’m not feeling that I’ll go any further in the process for this one.

I also got the call from my agency that I had been released from my “Geico” avail.  It wasn’t a good day.  Oh well, I’ve gotta get back on the horse and ride to the next one.

YES!  My agency called with the news that I’ve been placed on avail for “Geico”.  Excited.  I’ve got a good feeling about this one.

This past weekend I drove to Phoenix, Arizona to help a friend get a handle on her personal finance situation.  I was excited for a couple reasons.  I get a chance to help someone in a situation that seems hopeless to her, but I don’t think that it is at all.  Another reason is that it was the longest drive that I’ve taken in a really long time.  I just love road trips.  I used to being able to drive relatively long distances, but I seem to have lost my edge over the years.  Maybe it was from working overnight and I’m just always a little more tired than most people.

The drive was incredible!  Plus, I feel that I made more headway with her than I even expected.  I hope she’s able to stay on the program and make a real lifetime of progress.  I told her that next year is going to come anyway, why not try your best to have a better relationship with your money?

Callback: “Geico” @ Ross Lacy Casting.   In a word – butta!  This felt really good.

Audition: “KIA” @ Cathi Carlton Casting.  I had a ball in the room for this and I think I’m perfect for it, but I don’t usually get callbacks on these type of commercials.

Audition: “Geico” @ Ross Lacy Casting.  Another great time in the room; I HAVE to get a call back on this one.

Question: Are “sexy heels” sexy if they make u look as if you’re walking barefooted on hot coals? I like y’all how u are...4 the most part.

Audition: “Wilfred” @ Zuckerman/Johnson Casting.  This audition came directly as a result of me dropping off a photo/resume at Fox Studios.  Honestly, I don’t think it went all that well. I mean, it wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great either…but I’ll let them be the judge of that.

Shooting: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” Downtown LA.  I had a great time shooting today.  It was a small, but fun bit to do.

Ironically, two of the writers of the screenplay/executive producers, Josh Appelbaum & Andre Nemec, grew up with a friend of mine that I waited tables with back in New York.  I met Josh with my friend around 2000 when we went to a concert at the Universal amphitheater.  Josh and his partner Andre we're certainly working writers at that point but they have really moved up the ladder over the years.

I didn’t expect to see them on set, but to my great surprise, I did.  Of course Josh wouldn’t have remembered me by hearing my name or seeing my face, but I reminded him of the concert and he immediately remembered.  He took a photo of us and sent it to my friend, Max, who now lives in Florida.  He got a kick out of us being reunited all these years later.  Good, good times.

Today while I was shopping for a thank you card for the casting director and associate my theatrical agent called.

The news was great.

I’ve been rescheduled for the film!  Not only have I been rescheduled, they also converted my daily contract into a weekly contract.  Wow!  Some things are hard to predict in this business.

Technically I’m thinking that my contract might be for one week and one day I think.  Trust me, I don’t really care about that; I’m just happy and I’m getting to work.

I hope they don’t change their mind!

UPDATE: APRIL FOOLS!!!  I showed up for my afternoon call time for the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES film, but ended up being released after dinner without shooting anything because production was losing light and they knew they wouldn’t get to the scene in time.

Ouch!

Oh well, not much I can do about that.  I’m very thankful that one of the highest regarded casting directors in Hollywood thought of me for the role without auditioning.  Plus, I’ll get paid for the day.  There is always a chance that I’ll get rescheduled, but I’m thinking this one might’ve slipped through my fingers.  That said, I’m certainly hopeful.

Callback: “National Responsible Father Clearinghouse PSA” @ Craig Colvin Casting.  The spot didn’t have any scripted dialogue; just me and "my kids" dancing, connecting and having a great time.

The director asked if "we" had any "dance moves". I was hoping he actually meant "them", but said "we" out of respect...ya know, since I was standing there.

My 7 year-old said, "Yeah!, I can spin on my back!" So he spun on his back...sorta. Then he giggled.

My 8 year-old said, "I can spin on my back too!" So he got on the floor and spun on his back as well… He was a little bit better I think...but his giggle was more restrained.

Now is when it became clear that "we" meant..."we", as in me included.

The director then asked me what I had.

I had already used my "90's rapper" dance move so I was pretty tapped out.

ME: Well, I can spin on my head, but I probably shouldn't for reasons of liability.

DIRECTOR: Really, you can spin on your head?

ME: No.

DIRECTOR/PRODUCERS: (laugh)

ME: I was hoping you wouldn't ask that.

DIRECTOR: What about the worm?

At this point I NEEDED to do something, but just kinda laughed like it was silly. The kids had no idea what the worm was...I only kinda knew.

DIRECTOR: You can do the worm?

ME: It's been forever! (As in NEVER!)

I'm thinking "oh sht". Here goes...something.

I had no idea what to do first in attempting the worm. So I took I took off my glasses...so I wouldn't get a black eye or chip a tooth.

I got on the floor...and...started moving like a freakin' worm!!! I actually, sorta, felt like I was doing it. The worm!

I'm sure I wasn't, but we all got a laugh out of it and the kids were embarrassed by me...their "Dad".

Fun times.

The even better part was checking my messages afterwards and getting a surprise offer for a day of work on THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES film thanks to the great casting director Debra Zane.  I shoot tomorrow.

Audition: “Marvel’s Agents of Shield” @ Sara Finn Casting.  I was very happy with how this went in the room and even happier that the audition was the direct result of a drop-off I did yesterday.

Callback: “Lipton Tea” @ Francene Selkirk Casting.  Myself and the two other actors I went in with worked really well together and I think the creative team liked what they saw.  Let’s hope, but at any rate, my callback ratio has risen in recent months.

My Life (close to) the Sunset Strip…

INT. PARKING GARAGE - EVENING

Stephon Fuller exits the elevator in his apartment building on his way to an acting class. These days he’s just happy to make it out of the lobby and into the parking garage without his rocket being pulled, touched, caressed or stolen by SheHeHimHer…long story for another time. Anyway, things get interesting once he makes it to the "promised land" of the parking garage...The rest of the story...

Audition: “Subaru” @ Dan Bell Casting.  C’mon!  I HAVE to get a callback on this one!  I was great in the room.  At least I think I was, plus I think it’s being directed by the same director as the Verizon commercial I did last year.  Holla!

Callback: “Soup Plantation” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This was a good callback.  I was right in the zone and I think I’m really right for it.

Yesterday I was talking to a dear friend of mine; a friend of 20+ years. Someone who is younger than me, but I look up to. She's incredible.

We were talking about what is happening, so far, on my mentoring journey. I was telling her how the social worker assumed that I was brought up in a certain way based on what little she knows about me. I laughed and told the social worker that it wasn't like that at all.

This got me thinking and I asked my friend what it was about her mother that made her SO determined to ensure that her daughter (my friend) would rise above her circumstances. My friend answered, simply, that her mother wanted SO bad to give birth to her and to have the chance to be her mother.

That's when my friend told me that she (my friend) was born at 5 1/2 months and weighed just 2.1 pounds. I had no idea. I was fascinated. I was glad to know her late mother and can hear her unique voice as I write this.

I'm not sure where I'm headed with this. It just consumed me after hearing it. Me, I'm on a continual search of who I am and how I got to this place in my life...and of course where I'm going.

Today was “beach day” for the 5 year-old mentee, myself and the social worker.  I think it was rousing success.  This might actually work out; I might be able to add something to this situation.
