Audition: "AirTran" @ Ross Lacy Casting. Nice, nice nice! Another one in the bucket. I'm so overdue commercially it's not even funny, but I have a feeling I’m gonna hit soon. Yeah, I've been saying that for YEARS!! Faith and confidence is an amazing thing. Hopefully they’ll bring me in for round two.

I received a note yesterday from Alicia, one of my commercial agents, which totally made my week. It was in reference to the article I wrote for Backstage. Alicia is the one who recommended me to someone who recommended me to someone else in New York to write the article. Wow, it almost seems like I'm starting to "know people who know people".

Alicia wrote:

That article should be required reading for every actor - I am sending it to the rest of the agents to show that some actors do indeed get the big picture - and it's no coincidence you are as successful as you are.

It's a pleasure being your agent.

Wow! That means a lot coming from a partner at one of best talent agencies in the business.

Audition: "Kellogg's" @ Lisa Fields Casting. This is a Canadian national spot; I don't think I've ever read for a "Canadian National Spot" before, but there's a first time for everything huh?

This one was a little weird. I was portraying a runner who was running in slow motion. Before we slated our names, the female runner was instructed to spray me with water that was supposed to be sweat….like in a sweaty runner. Yo! That was kinda sexy. I mean here is this attractive woman in great physical shape; wearing some kinda form-fitting outfit spraying me with water…I don't know where that came from, but I would love to do it again at callbacks and again on-set. Yup, you've got it right - hot, shapely, strangers of the female persuasion, in running attire, spraying water in my face drives me crazy. Anything for a check huh? Or a potential check. It went well; I ran really, really slow.

I left this audition feeling so strongly about how fortunate I am to do what I do for a job. I mean it has to be one of the greatest ways to make a living in the world. I really look forward to bigger and better things while enjoying what I have today…and I have a lot. And I’m looking to get more.

Tonight I went to a dinner for the family of Eric Gelman. Eric was a great, funny actor friend I used to work with in New York at The Harley-Davidson Café. He was super talented and just a joy to be around. At the dinner were 10-12 people that I also used to work with 10-12 years ago in New York. That is amazing in itself that so many of us are still in touch from a seemingly "random restaurant job" from a decade ago. I have to say that this was anything but a "random restaurant job"; it was one of the greatest jobs I've ever had and Eric was a part of that.

Ironically, we had been loosely planning a get together for the coming weeks, but then got word that Eric's parents were in town. At that point everything changed and we HAD to get together. Why? Because Eric Gelman, that wonderful son, actor, friend and funnyman was murdered on April 17th 2005. His parents are in town for the trial. We wanted to show support to his family.

This is and continues to be a heart breaking situation. His parents and other members of his family that I've met are the greatest…and truth be told……I hate that I know, first-hand, just how great they are. I hate that I've shaken their hands, hugged them and have cried in front of them. I wish I'd never met them; it tears me apart to see them go through this. I wish I could continue to see Eric and just “wonder” what his family is like. It's very clear as to where Eric came from; I see him in them. The only reason I know his parents and any of his extended family is because of this tragic situation. I don’t want to meet anymore of my friends extended family because of a situation like this. To the Gelman Family – you are forever in my heart and my mind.

Audition/Producers: "Close to Home" @ Schiff/Audino Casting. This is for a one-day guest star role. It went well and I'm perfect for it. I would LOVE to get this one.

Shortly after I get home @ 5:19pm I get a call for another guest-star appointment for "My Name is Earl". Yes!

Within minutes I had printed and highlighted the sides and was reading through it. The role was that of a prosecutor. My initial thought was that I might be a little young, but I remembered how unconventional the show is and just went for it. THEN! At 5:42 my agent called back to cancel the appointment because they made an offer to someone with a name. Oh well. Easy come, easy go. The cool thing is that they called me straight to producers for a guest-star role; which is happening more often for me. NEXT!

I met a really cool producer out of New York today through Casting Director Deborah Dion. Her name is Blair Breard and she’s making moves with some real players in the business. It’s another connection that I feel really good about.

Okay, one of my theatrical agents called this afternoon with info for a producer session for a co-star role in a pilot at one of the busiest casting offices in Los Angeles. She didn't submit me and wanted to know if I'd submitted myself, dropped off a photo or recently met someone from the office in a workshop. She just wanted to know what the deal was before confirming me for the session. The reason why was because it was a two-line role and the last time I was in that office it was for a recurring role. That doesn’t tell the whole story, but my team is trying to move forward.

Oh $?#}, it's about to get interesting. Why? Read on. You see one of the owners of this casting office called me at home yesterday about a mutual friend. It was a short conversation and we didn’t really discuss the business. I don’t audition at this office too much, but I have booked there in the past. So, when I told my agent about the phone call yesterday she said “reeealllly?”.

She knows that I’m on the constant hustle for opportunities, but I explained that I hadn’t recently met anyone from the office and I hadn’t dropped a photo there in at least the last two weeks.

I just checked my records and they show that I did a general drop for this project on January 22nd. I had the name of the project, who was casting, but no roles – I think it came from the Actorsite list. Although I wouldn’t have dropped for this particular role it amazes me how many actors think general drops are a waste of time.

Back to my agent; I told her I thought it was just a coincidence since I spoke to him yesterday. Who knows, I can’t be sure. Even though it was a producer session my agent and I agreed that I should pass on the project. So pass we did. The last time I passed on something at this office was for “Dexter”; they eventually brought me back in for something larger.

Audition: "Miller-Lite" @ Cathi Carlton Casting. This goes really well. There was one thing though; we actually had to hold "Miller-Lite" bottles. Now, you wouldn't think that would be so hard right? Wrong! Why? You see, I've never even had so much as a sip of beer, or any alcohol for that matter, in my entire life. I don’t even like drinking from a wine or champagne glass. The beer bottle just didn't feel natural in my hand so I had to keep glancing at how the other 3 guys were holding theirs. I so desperately wanted that "cool guy drinking-a-beer" swagger. I think I did okay in the end. Weird, I know.

Sometimes I actually wish I drank because it looks so "social and fun", plus I'm fascinated by the bottles. I can sit at a bar and just look at the bottles of liquor and watch people order drinks forever. I don’t know, it’s just so fascinating for some reason. I must say that I did not particularly enjoy selling beer, wine and liquor when I waited tables. It was too much to remember – up, rocks, salt, no salt, top-shelf, well, shaken, stirred, “how many olives?”, etc. WHAT?!
Other times, I witness what beer, wine and liquor can do to people and I think I’m gonna be okay without it. Hangovers, DUI's, $12 Apple Martini's and not being able to make morning appointments doesn't fit to well into what it is I moved to Los Angeles for. I often wonder how much of my accomplishments wouldn’t exist if I lost my edge due to drinking. I also wonder how many cool stories I would have if I was a drinker…hmmm I may never know.

Audition: "Jacks Links" @ Jeff Rosenman Casting. I felt this went well and I'm right enough for it too. Callback here I come...I hope.

Audition: “HBO comic project” @ Deborah Dion Casting. I have to tell you that this woman is one of the sweetest women I’ve ever met. I have a thing with casting directors named Deborah/Debra I guess. It’s a really, super small project that she’s doing and I’m glad she contacted me for it. Good to have that e-mail address on the resume. It went really, really well; Deborah was laughing quite a bit. I have a good feeling about this situation. Not necessarily limited to “this” project, but my relationship with Deborah on the whole.

Five minutes before arriving at the above audition I get a call for a callback for the commercial audition from yesterday. I’ll tell you there really is something to be said for being totally available for auditions. I remember when I lived in New York and I would have conflicts with auditions and work. It always worked out, but there were those times of angst about it.
Callback: “Sony” @ Francene Selkirk Casting. Okay, so here I find myself stripped down to my underwear for the second time in 24 hours. What’s up with that? I guess the universe got the memo that I’m working out again. Anyway, the audition couldn’t have gone any better than it did. I just think I’m too old, but I didn’t let that stop me. I’m not expecting to hear anything more about it, but you never know. My work is done – and done well I must say.

A couple of weeks ago I shot some photos with a photographer who isn’t new to photography, but looking to expand into headshots. We did a quick session and her name is Deborah at http://www.blackrhinophotography.com/ check her out!

Looks like me!

Audition: “Sony” @ Francene Selkirk Casting. As I’ve said many times; this is where I had my first audition ever in Los Angeles – July 29th 1998 - 10:30am. It was 12 ½ hours after moving to Los Angeles and I got a callback. I have yet to book there, but I get quite a few callbacks and avails – and releases from avails now that I think about it. That is gonna change soon – I’ve been saying that for years!

The role I was going in for was the dad in the spot – 38-48. There was also a wife and the son. The son was to be in his 20’s. As I looked around at who was there I felt like I fit right in the middle of specs for the spot. Not playing old enough for the dad, but too old for the son. After thinking about it I decided to switch categories and be seen for the son instead since I felt closer to being right for that.

Before switching roles I didn’t know I was expected to strip down to my underwear. WHAT?! Thankfully, I’ve been working on getting my LA figure back in check for the moms in the room! Anyway, the audition goes really, really well. I don't if I'll fall through the cracks as far being right enough for a callback, but I definitely did my job. After my group read Francene was talking about the spot with the session runner while I was getting dressed. I was trying to get out in a hurry because they were having sort of a private conversation about the auditions. On my way out Francene noticed me and said “Hey, that’s my blogger”. It didn’t hit me until about 15 seconds later. I don’t really know who reads this stuff, but somehow she is at least aware that is exists. Francene has a special place with me, plus she’s an East Coaster.

Today is the day I give blood at the SAG Headquarters. I used to have a minor phobia of needles, but after my mom passed away I made it a priority to give blood on a more regular basis. I remember once, while giving blood, I was on the phone with my mom and I got word that I booked a role on “Gilmore Girls”, but I couldn’t do it because I was already booked on another show. That was good day. I‘ve been trying to book “Gilmore Girls” again ever since!

Usually, I’m not the greatest at prepping myself for the blood thing; meaning I don’t always eat a meal in the morning of, I don’t always hydrate and I don’t get a lot rest before going in. I’ve never had a problem so I didn’t think too much of it.

This time I decided to do everything “right”. I ate and drank way more than usual yesterday and this morning and I slept like 8-9 hours straight which is really unusual. So I go in and fill out all the paper work, get my temperature taken, ya know all the stuff you gotta do. I’m in the chair, squeezing the ball and my blood is flowing out really well – I usually like to steal a look at the blood bag as it’s filling up. Why? I’m not sure.

When permitted I get up and proceed to the waiting area. It’s California state law that you have to stay there for at least 15 minutes to make sure you’re okay to re-enter the world. I was offered and accepted the usual juice and cookies – I wanted to do this right.

About an hour after I got home I was toast. I could barely function; I couldn’t do anything but lay down and lay down is what I did – for several hours. Normally, after giving blood, I’m ready to go the gym, ride my bike, attend a workshop, go to an audition or anything else I might want or need to do. So what did I learn? I learned that sometimes “the right way” to do things isn’t necessarily “the right way” for me. I think next time my preparation for giving blood is gonna be Jack & Coke on the rocks and a cigarette – Lucky Strike - no filter……

I’m kidding. I just don’t understand what happened. It’s kinda like me not ever wanting to get a flu shot – I’ve never had the flu and I feel like if I get a flu shot I will definitely get the flu - immediately. I’ll have to find a happy medium between my “rock-star” approach to giving blood and “the right way”.

Audition: “Las Vegas Tourism” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. I get here 4 hours early with hopes of being seen because I'm shooting indie film "Privileged" today. Plus I have another audition I'm trying to get to before my calltime.

I arrive. Oops.....at first, the session runner, Marvin, doesn't think I'm there for the right category; I'm the only African-American guy in the waiting room .....tickticktickticktick...then he says "ah come on in". Once we get to the audition room he checks the master list and, sure enough, I was on it for the "Hero guy".

This brings up something else that shows how great my commercial agents are and how well they know me. I always look at the "race check box" on the SAG audition sign-in sheet. So, so many times I am one of very few African-American males being seen. That convinces me that my agents don't look at me as simply a talented African-American actor, but a talented actor who happens to be African-American - a much better place to be in my opinion. It’s simply a much larger category. My theatrical agents do the same thing.

This audition goes really well and the spot is hilarious. I gotta tell ya, this guy Marvin, that runs the sessions at Kathy Knowles Casting is incredible. I must admit, it took me a couple times of auditioning for him before I got used to his style and learned to appreciate him.

At first he came off as kinda of bitter and callous; then "I" started to "get it". Marvin is my best friend in an audition; he's not bitter or callous he just knows WTF he's doing. He let's an actor know when he/she is on and when they are not. Maybe, since I’ve learned appreciate him is why I get a good number of callbacks and avails at this office.

Next:

I'm scrambling to make it from Santa Monica back to Hollywood to get to this next audition – and it doesn’t look good. I think they are going to be on their lunch break, but all I can do is try my hardest. I don’t like missing auditions.

So I get to The Casting Studios and “Studio 2” looks completely deserted. I could have just walked out then, but I figured I should at least ask someone. So I went to the front desk and explained my situation to the gentleman telling him that I think they may have already broke for lunch. Before he could say anything a woman walked behind me and said “…not yet, sign-in, I’ll take your Poloroid”. YES!!! I made it.

So I signed in and read the copy and saw that there were 3 scientists in the spot. Five minutes pass…..ten Minutes pass and no one shows up. What? So the session runner, Mike, reads it with me and it goes GREAT!! My head is spinning, but I was so happy to make both of auditions and still be able to get to the movie shoot on time.

“Privileged” – Parking - South La Brea –

I arrive and am taken to my trailer to get settled. I see one of the producers, Philippe Denham, and he caught my appearances on “Brothers & Sisters”. I also reunited with one of the other producers Keith Shaw; I spent many sessions as the reader for this film several months ago. Before long we are shuttled to the set for a blocking rehearsal. That is where I met who I’ll be working with, Arlen Escarpeta and Tatyana Ali. We did a few quick rehearsals and then it was back to base camp.

While Arlen and I were in getting our make-up done the make-up lady couldn’t remember which one of us was in “Weeds”. I didn’t say anything at first because I didn’t know if Arlen had done an episode too. One of these days I’ll get used to hearing that people actually see some of the stuff I’ve been on.

Anyway, we get back to set a while later for A LOT of takes and a lot of fun. Acting is always fun for me. Jonah Salander, the director, Arlen and Tatyana were a complete pleasure to work with. I was there quite a bit longer than I thought I would and it was cool I have a feeling I’ll be working with this group again in the future. Whoa!! What a productive day - two and auditions and a job. NEXT!!!!

Arlen Escarpeta, Tatyana Ali and me on set "Privileged".

Okay, so I call the ad agency in Chicago to get an update on the “Michelin” commercial. The person I usually talk to isn’t in so I leave a message for her. Not two minutes later my commercial send me an email informing me that I’ve been outgraded for the “Michelin” spot. What? “You’ve got to be kidding me?” I just stare at the email thinking it’s gonna change, but it didn’t. This was not the news that I hoping to hear. As I've said in the past; "booking the job" is not always enough.

I took a deep breath and called my agent. She had already requested a copy of the spot so that we could judge for ourselves. I told her it was possible that they got rid of all three engineers, but I’d be a little surprised if it was only me that was edited out. Could be though, we’ll find out when we get the tape.

Well, with that news, I’m not gonna be making any dental surgery decisions today or tomorrow. It’ll have to wait until I figure something out; it’s not like I’m bleeding, plus the pain is totally gone.

I’m not feeling so great right now so I decided to go to the gym – which I don’t particularly enjoy, but I knew it would help get me centered again. On the way I stopped by to see Debra and Tannis @ Debra Zane Casting. Since they cast “Ocean’s Thirteen” and I pulled out to do the commercial I wanted to update them of the latest development – plus I like them, they are nice.

We all got a great laugh out of it and I was already feeling better. They then informed me that the group of guys that I was to be with in the film got to go back for re-shoots. Wow, more days on the film. We all agreed that this is happening for a reason – I’m not necessarily sure what the reason is, but there is something behind it. It makes for a good story – I guess. Well, I’m proud to say that I’ve been hired 3 times by Academy Award winning directors…and it will happen again.

So on to the gym…I do my two hours of sweating, running, lifting and more sweating and when I get in the car I have a message from my theatrical agent. I usually leave my phone in the car when I’m at the gym because I just don’t want to hear from anyone during that time, but I should probably change that. I don’t really like being at the gym in the first place and if I’m getting calls it’s all the more reason to not lift those dumbbells or do those leg presses. But business is business and it would be worse if I missed a timely call. So I think the answer is to carry my phone, but turn the ringer off and check it periodically during my workout – yeah, that should work.

The message came in just 5 minutes before I got back in the car and it’s a last minute audition for a pilot at Fox Studios. It’s a co-star role and my agent wasn’t sure I’d go in, but she figured she’d try anyway since it’s a pilot. The call stemmed from meeting someone from the casting office at Actorsite recently. After the last couple of days I’d had of course I was going in. So I rushed home to get cleaned up to get over to Fox. When I saw the sides, I thought I was too young, but I wasn’t going to let that get in the way of my performance.

When I finally found the office on the Fox lot there was snow outside on the ground. Snow? Yeah snow. I actually walked over and touched it. I guess they were shooting something earlier that required snow. It reminded how much I love what I do. It’s the “playing” that is so fun. Snow on the ground in Los Angeles – you gotta love it.

Audition/pilot/tape: “Life” @ Megan Branman Casting. When it was my turn to go in to read the casting associate looked at me for a second and thought I was too young as well. She suggested I read another role as well. I paused and thought about it. Then she told me I was more right for it, but it was smaller. I paused again; then we both agreed that “no”, I shouldn’t read for the other, smaller role. My agents and I have this conversation often about trying to move up the ladder to get more guest star roles and beyond.

Even though I play a bit young for this smarmy lawyer the audition went really well. She thanked me for coming in and we also talked about moving up the ladder in my career; she even gave me hug on the way out.

So it’s 9am and I arrive at my dentist, Dr. Rashti’s office; I’m not in a great mood, but when I walk in a kid is waiting in the lobby. I like kids. Then everyone in the office starts talking about how they saw me on “Brothers & Sisters”. I don’t know why that still catches me by surprise anytime someone sees me on the tube, but for some reason it does.

Anyway I sit down beside the kid and say “Sup?” he say responds “Sup?”. That put me in a much better mood and within a couple of minutes me and this 8 year old were kickin’ it about motorcycles, video games, his stepmom – the artist, his favorite subject - math and video game cheat codes. We were definitely connecting until it was my turn to get in the chair.

So I’m in the chair getting ready for my cleaning and explaining the extreme pain I had been in. I say “had been in” because it had mysteriously subsided a great deal. I explained to Dr. Rashti how bad the pain was and she x-rayed the tooth and it looked fine. She poked it, put ice on it and examined it repeatedly and couldn’t find anything wrong. WHAT? Just yesterday I was damn near in a fetal position in extreme pain until my brother Jeff called and laughed at me. I don’t think I ever laughed that hard while in pain. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t in pain any longer; the Vicodin I had taken just to get to sleep last night had worn off.

Anyway, during the cleaning Dr. Rashti found some other stuff and took another x-ray and asked when I had my wisdom teeth removed. I thought about it for a second and then remembered it was when I was working at The Standard in like 2000 I think. Wow, I hadn’t thought about that for a long time. She then asked if one had broken off while being extracted. I thought…….Oh no, yeah, it was all coming back to me. One DID break and the dentist couldn’t get the broken piece out – which now makes no sense to me. I honestly don’t remember exactly what happened, but I remember it happening. Aw man!!

So I got the bad news that I need have surgery to get the rest of the tooth removed. I also was informed that I grind my teeth really, really bad and need to have a night guard made. This put me in a terrible mood, not like mad at anybody, just frustrated. I left there with my head spinning and just sat in my car damn near tears. I was beside myself. I needed a moment to clear my head – before my audition in a couple of hours.

The last time I had dental surgery I underestimated what I was going through and it all snuck on me. I ended up with a black eye and a swollen face - fo real. This is not nearly as serious, but still it’s just not what I had planned – dental stuff ain’t cheap and my Quicken budget program is asking question like “WTF?”. What to do, what to do.

Alright, I wasn’t going to call the ad agency about my “Michelin” commercial, but I’ll call them tomorrow to see what the status of it is. I don’t wanna commit to paying for this stuff until I can get a clearer picture financially.

Audition: “Xerox” @ TLC/Loree Booth Casting. I always like going here to audition; well I like going most places to audition, but I’ve booked twice here in the past for the legendary commercial director Joe Pytka.

I’m not sure how this went; I just wasn’t all there mentally, but for some reason I wasn’t too concerned. I felt I was right for the spot and they know I can do it and they’ve hired me before. I think I’m right enough for it, so we’ll see. So I left there just not too sure, but that’s okay. You can’t win ‘em all.

Monday, February 05, 2007

Oh no, I think I have a cavity…or worse. I’ve been in denial for the last couple of days about this slightly, nagging pain. Last night the alarm went off and was almost writhing on the floor in pain. Thankfully, I saved some of that Vicodin from my surgery last year. That’s stuff really works! I mean really. I still don’t get why some take it if they aren’t pain, but maybe that’s something I don’t need to understand. This afternoon after the gym and GSA Contract seminar at SAG I took some medication and got in the bed – I was in terrible pain. It felt like someone was drilling into my temple. I HAD to call 1-800-VICODIN. I have a dentist appointment tomorrow – hopefully I won’t be drugged up for my audition in the early afternoon – especially because I think it’s a Pytka spot.

Speaking of General Service Contracts (GSA). OMG! Those things are potentially vicious to say the least. I have one, but I’m not too concerned about it, because I don’t believe I’m in a relationship with vicious people. But some agents are definitely running game on people – educate yourselves folks!

Yesterday I rode my bike all they way to the top of Griffith Park to the observatory; 16.25 miles roundtrip – that uphill part was a BEAST!!! I did it without stopping even once. Maybe I’m in better shape than I give myself credit for. Next time I should actually go in the observatory; I haven’t been in there since 2001.
No news on the "Verizon" print avail. I really hope it doesn't get "too" interesting. Whatever is supposed to happen will happen - I suppose.

This blog completely blows my mind sometimes. I mean, I’m not a writer in the traditional sense. Even today I’m concerned by how my grammar and text flows. This bio/blog is more words than I wrote the ENTIRE time I was in grade school. When I started it I had no idea I would be read as widely as it is – however wide that is. Obviously, I knew I was putting it on the WORLD WIDE WEB, but still, I didn’t think it would turn into what it has. The consultation session I had yesterday stemmed from the young performers mother finding my writing from many, many states away and urging her daughter to book a session with me. Really? Wow!

Several days ago I got an email from a New York Casting Director that said this:
==========

Hi Stephon,

I found your blog while googling Xxxxxxx Xxxx and I'm hoping you have contact info for her as I'm trying to get her in for an audition! If you are still in touch with her would you let her know I am trying to get ahold of her:

New York, NY 10036

Or if you feel comfortable giving me her number that would be great too...her SAG and AEA info is outdated.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

All the best,

WHAT?!?!?! The actress she was looking for is someone I waited tables with 12 years ago at The Harley-Davidson CafĂ© in New York. The reason I wrote about her in my blog was because one of many times I was back in New York I went to see her in a play – actually I think I’ve seen her twice on stage while back in the City. I had a number for her and left a message, but I wasn’t sure how current it was because I hadn’t spoken to this actress in 3 or so years. So I called another New York friend her in LA to get a more current number and left another message. I then called the Casting Director to let her know that she should be hearing from the actress soon. The actress got the message and was thrilled to have gotten the info in a timely manner. I thought that was pretty cool.

On another note, I just found out that my friend, Lydia Blanco, just booked a guest lead in a pilot and is going to Vancouver for 10 days. How cool is that? I remember meeting Lydia when she got to town not to many years ago and was non-union. We have some conversations about who I felt was the single most important casting director to know in this town and it didn’t take too long for her to become SAG - through that very person. So much has happened for her since then. We both worked on “Good Morning, Miami” and “The Terminal”. One of these days I’m going to get to work in Vancouver; I hear it’s beautiful. Reminds me that I need to get my passport renewed Go Lydia!!

Airing: “Monk” on USA @ 9pm EST/PST. I shot this back in May; I thought they scrapped the episode, but they had split their season and that is the reason for the delay.
YES!! NO!! Yes. I guess. My print agent calls this afternoon to give me the news that I am on avail for the “Verizon” print ad from yesterday. I’m thrilled about the news, but of course there a little potential complication. One of the two days I’m on avail for is the same day I’m scheduled to work on the film “Privileged” that I booked back October. Huh? Why does this “scheduling thing” keep happening to me? I mean I’m not booked, but still. It was the same thing with “Ocean’s Thirteen”; book something months in advance and then when it finally gets close to do the job another job conflicts. Well…I have a great answer as to why this keeps happening. It’s because I am a working actor. The more I work the more I will have these issues. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish for scheduling conflicts, but it’s good that people know my name…at least a little bit.

I have to say that I am really enjoying this consulting thing. I am meeting actors in town that are looking for direction and I really, truly feel like I’m providing them with what they are coming to me for – alternative ways of thinking. I don’t pretend to have “the answers”, but I have definitely learned a lot along the way. Plus, I’m an expert on “my opinion” and I stand behind it.

Today I had a session with a young lady who is my youngest client to date and the some of the advice she’d had been given made me cringe. I mean terrible advice that equated to way too much wasted time in her young career. I was really glad we had a sit-down and I look at today as being the first day of the rest of her career. I don’t think some “industry professionals” realize the impact of some of the things they say to actors; especially actors arriving from other markets that have no reason to know any better. This is not an audition; it is someone’s career and future. You cannot get these wasted days back.

Print go-see: “Verizon” @ Gayle A. Means/Lynch Studios. Okay this is 5th time I’ve been in for “Verizon” in the last 5 weeks. Does this mean anything? I don’t know, but they should book a brotha soon. It went well, you know how print is; in and out in a jiffy.

Audition: “Geek Squad” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. Geek squad – YES!!! This should be right down my alley – ya know, the geek thing is perfect for me. I sure hope so; I get a lot of callbacks for this office, but it’s time to go the distance. Callbacks and avails are nice, but……….YES!!! This audition goes really, really well. I would love to get a callback for this one. The session runner was great and had me and my partner do it about 4 different times. The session runner @ Kathy Knowles Casting is great; I think his name is Melvin. He’s really “smart” funny and will tell you if you’re being fake or pushing too much on camera. It’s for “Geek Squad”, I’m perfect for that!!! Somebody should hire me soon; I’m due.

Oh no! I’ve decided to finally start working out again at the gym. Why? What’s the point? It’s been 7 months since I last hit the weights and I’m gonna feel it. I don’t particularly like working out, although many years ago I used to hit the iron 6 days a week - many years ago. I’d much rather be riding my motorcycle, skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding or on my mountain bike. I eat very little and VERY slow; although I love food. I sleep 4-6 hours a night; although I love to sleep. I think I’m just a workaholic; I cannot sit still.

I got through the workout pretty well, but I’m gonna have to eat more and drink more water; which is an issue for me. I weighed myself and found that I gained about 10 lbs., but funny enough I constantly have people telling me that I look like I’ve lost weight. I don’t get it; I feel a bit heavier and can tell that I’m a little “pudgy” and softer than usual. I’ll be back to my fighting weight really soon – probably by the end of the week! I know poor me.

It’s been pretty quiet for me lately audition-wise, but I’m not too concerned – it’ll come around. Actually, I hardly notice because I’m busy with a lot of different things. I’ve been writing some stuff and the consulting venture is taking off too.

Tonight I did my first radio interview; actually that’s not true; I did a piece for National Public Radio (NPR) last year. I met Rob Hollywood, who is based in Connecticut, through MySpace several months ago. He runs Inside Entertainment, which is an entertainment internet radio show. He contacted me and asked me to call in so I did, you can click here to listen to the interview. I come on at 11:20 seconds into the 30 minute program. Thanks Rob!

Audition: "Liberty Mutual Insurance" @ Laray Mayfield Casting. Yay! An appointment! I knew it would happen any day. It went really well; they wanted a lot of really small, subtle stuff and I gave it to him. Callbacks aren’t until February 20th and hopefully I’ll get one!

Drops, drops and more drops. I've logged a lot of miles in my trusty Honda recently. Hopefully, I'll book some more work soon and get some routine work done on it.

Wow, it's been an entire week since my last audition; that doesn't happen too often. I hardly notice it because I do so much running around anyway. Whether it's seeking auditions, actually auditioning or being on set I keep it moving no matter what.

Wow the last two days have been really busy as far as drop-offs go. I'm trying to make it happen and work on more top shows in larger parts. Typically, pilot season starts really late for me, but that's okay. I just wanna get in on whatever is out there for the most part. So tomorrow will be more of the same.

I stopped by to congratulate Deb and Tannis at Debra Zane Casting on their 8 nominations for "Dreamgirls". One thing I don't really understand is how a film can get so many nominations, but not one for Best Director or Best Picture. Kinda makes you how it all really works.

Debra asked me if I had heard about the new project that she and Tannis just landed; she figured if anyone in town knew it would be me. I wasn't sure but there are two very specific projects that I've had my eye on that I figure she'll be casting. One is still probably a year or so away, but I've heard very recent rumblings about the other one; so I guessed that one. I was right! She is going to be casting "IJ4"; that is a big deal. Locations aren't set, the cast is pretty small and it doesn't start shooting until summer. I'm not anticipated getting to audition for it since the cast is so small, but you never know; I do have some key things in my favor.

If you look closely and you might see me on “Brothers & Sisters” tonight 10pm EST/PST on ABC. ....and yes indeed I did, in fact, appear on the show. Actually, I knew I'd be on in some capacity because I did looping for it a couple of days ago. Cool, my list of "Blue Chip Shows" grows. "Brothers & Sisters" isn't "Blue Chip" yet, but I have a strong feeling it's well on its way.
I heard ALOT about my appearance on this show because I was fortunate enough to be in the promo that ran all week. I knew the show was popular before I booked the role, but now I know it's "really" popular. It just means more role for actors and that is a great thing.

Audition: "Verizon" @ Kathy Knowles Casting. What is going on with all of the "Verizon" appointments? This is the fourth one in the last month. I hope it's some sort of sign that I'll be booking one in the near future...or something else...or ANYTHING!

Audition: “Verizon” @ Popcasting. hmm...this one didn't go so great. For some reason, neither I nor my partner could get it together for this audition. You would have thought it was our first audition ever. Fortunately, the casting director gave us three takes...and I think the last one was the best...if they get rid of the first two....oops.

Get this - over the last several days I've been getting e-mails and text messages from different parts of the country letting me know that I'm in the promo for next weeks episode of "Brothers & Sisters". Cool!

So yes, I thought it was odd when production from the show called tonight and asked my availability to come in for a looping session today. I thought everything would have been done by now so close to airing, but evidently not. No problem for me. Looping means I'm at least partially in the final edit and I get to see part of it early. Oh yeah, of course I’ll get paid for my time. This'll be the second looping check this month. Unexpected checks with my name on them are always welcomed.

Nothing going on today; other than trying to figure where I should drop headshots at. Gotta keep it moving.

The phone rings at 10:04am; it’s an associate from Natasha Cuba Casting with an appointment to go on tape for “Short Circuitz” anytime before 12:30pm. On the message she said she was calling my agent as well.

At 10:22am my commercial agency calls with another appointment for 1:35pm; then calls back at 10:38 with a callback also at 1:35pm. The also gave me the time frame so I could get to the callback and also make the first time audition.

I check the sides for “Short Circuitz” and it’s a funny, but very short scene with Wayne Brady. A little while after that my theatrical agent calls with the same info; I didn’t mention I had already gotten the call. She was surprised I was considering auditioning for it. I thought the bit was funny and this casting office is usually busy, plus they called me in for a commercial a couple of days ago.

They told her that they wanted me to read for two different roles. I looked at the other role which was one line and we were not go to audition for that. So my agent called back to confirmed that the scene was really with Wayne Brady and that I wouldn’t read for the other role. My agent and I also agreed that if for some reason they offer me the other role that I am not auditioning for we would not accept. It’s was great to be able to talk to my agent about these things as we try to build this career.

Audition: “Short Circuitz” @ Natasha Cuba Casting. I read for the role of “Dexter” and it goes really well. After reading; the guy running the camera said “okay, cool now we’ll go ahead and read the other role. I said, “no, I think I’ll let it ride with my read for “Dexter”. He kinda looked at me funny and then said “okay”. I thanked him and left.

Callback: “Shell” @ Jessica J. Casting. I don’t know what else to say; I feel it went well and I’m right for it. It’d be nice to book something.

Audition: “Dodge” @ Alyson Horn Casting. Good time, fun audition that I’m perfect for. Hopefully, I’m not the only that thinks that.

So, all in all, a great, productive day. I woke up this morning with no appointments and ended up with three.

Audition: “Konica/Minolta-BizHub” @ Renita Whited Casting. The audition went well and I think I’m right for it. Callbacks aren’t until week after next and hopefully I’ll get one.

Audition: “Shell” @ Jessica J. Casting. This one went really well and I think I’m right for it. I would love to do a commercial with a NASCAR driver.

Audition: “Lexus” @ Natasha Cuba Casting. I think this went okay; I kinda jack it up a bit...sorta on purpose and sorta not. I just wasn’t feeling what was happening so I did my own thing. I guess we’ll see if it worked…or not.

I guess I’m back in my hustling mode – I was doing a drop-off today at a studio and the guard asked me what company I was with. I said, really fast “MySelf, Inc.”; he just looked at me. His co-worker died laughing; I told him to scribble it down real fast like a doctor and it’ll look legit. They let me through. I'm not usually so forward, but it seem to fit the situation.

I’m on a 5:40am flight back to LA. I’M NOT READY!!! I wanna ride my motorcycle one more time, play with my niece and nephew some more, go bowling with my sister again – how about park the car in a driveway? Simple things.

Anyway, it’s time to go back to work or at least the pursuit of work. It’s amazing when I go home because I TRULY CHECK OUT of my life in LA. I had a surprise on my connecting flight from Virginia to Charlotte, NC. One of my classmates from my very first class in Virginia was on the same flight also going back to Los Angeles. Her name is Joanna Canton and she is a wonderful actress. We met 13+ years ago and we are both still in the game…and actually making a living at it. I’m not really surprised, but at the same time it’s kinda surreal that we are doing what we set out to do so long ago. From VA to NYC to LA we are living the dream – go Joanna!

After landing at LAX @ 10am I went straight home to take a shower. By 1pm I had already stop by to see all of my agents. I always like for them to see me in the flesh when I return from out of town. I get to share about my family stuff and hear their stories too.

Tuesday, January 02, 2007

Wow, the gates of 2007 are open already. My commercial agent calls with an appointment for tomorrow…only problem is that I’m still in Virginia Beach. I’m not ready to comeback to the vortex of LA yet so I’ll have to miss this one.

Now I REALLY know things are moving why? Because I just got my first release from an avail this year – already!!!!! Yeah, I got released for the “Verizon” commercial. Geez, I hope I can somehow cut down on the amount of releases from avails I get this year. Obviously, I’m doing a lot right, but not sealing the deal as much as I’d like.

It’s funny because years ago I didn’t get as many callbacks and avails, BUT if I got a callback there was a good chance I would book. So I had the “brilliant” idea trying to increase my callback ratio. I’ve been pretty successful in that, but in the last few years I’ve booked fewer jobs…hmmm. I’m not overly concerned, but I’m used to getting that call saying I’ve been released…that isn’t good. I think my fortunes are going to change in 2007.

I called the ad agency for the “Michelin” commercial I did in October to get a status report. Supposedly, it’s still on schedule to start in mid-February; I sure hope so.

Yeah!!! I got to go dirtbike riding today with my brother and my nephew. It was so much fun, but I was so out of shape it wasn’t even funny. I haven’t worked out since the Summer and I’m getting a little pudgy - I think. Gotta fix that in ’07. My brother whipped my butt partially because I was so tired and winded that I could hardly hold onto the bike.

It’s so great to be leaving LA to go home!!! I waited until the last minute which was nice because I didn’t have to think about having to change my ticket for a last minute something. I’m on avail for a “Verizon” commercial for when I return.

Friday, December 22, 2006

YES!!! I’m on avail for the “Verizon” spot. I am determined to turn more of these avails into bookings; I hope I can start with this one.

I was shaving my head this morning and decided to get a Mohawk. Yeah. I’m not sure why, but I did. I didn’t plan to do it and I didn’t do a very good job, but what’s done is done.

The top...

Dag...I really jacked up the back! ...oh well.

Callback: “Verizon” @ Cathi Carlton Casting. Yes!! This was that one that should have been so simple, but wasn’t. I felt I was really right for it, so hopefully I can go in and represent. I’m not sure what I’ll be representing, but I’ll rep something… The callback goes really well. I would love to book this spot; of course.

Audition: “Century 21” @ Cathi Carlton Casting. This one goes just okay. There was a lot of dialogue. I did pretty well with the dialogue, but even I didn’t believe most of what I was saying. I had some good moments, but don’t think I put it all together too well…we’ll see…or not.

http://www.stephonfuller.com/consultations.html

Tuesday, December 19, 2006

Audition “Best Buy” @ Craig Colvin Casting. This audition went GREAT! I mean really, really great. I’ve gotten many, many callbacks for Craig over the years, but have yet to book. I don’t know if I’ll get a callback this time, but I sure hope so.

Before I read, Winston the session runner, wanted to ask me something. He asked if I still hadn’t had any coffee or alcohol. I started laughing and said “No, but I think I wanna start drinking because I wouldn’t be such a boring person. I wanna have stories!!” Ya know, stories about “last night” – Like – “last night me and so and so got soooooo……..fill in the blank!!! I was craaaaazzy!” My problem is I remember everything. Drinkers have the greatest stories, at least the part they remember. I’m talking about real drinkers…..I’m kidding….sorta. Anyway, Winston also said he sees me quite often on TV. I guess it makes sense that he could say that because fortunately a lot of my bookings have been on what I call the “Blue Chip Shows” that run a lot in syndication.

Shooting “Brothers & Sisters” @ Disney Studios. This was my first time working on this studio lot and hopefully not the last. I had a quick afternoon of work. I was the only principal in the scene; just me and 3 background players. When I first saw director Michael Lange to thank him for the opportunity and thanked me and said “he hopes it won’t be 3 years before we work together again” (He directed me on “The O.C.” just over 2 years ago.) I was taken aback by that comment and the enthusiasm behind it.

When I arrived on-set I saw a crew member I recognized; so I approached him and introduced myself. We couldn’t figure where we had worked together as he went down his list of recent shows. In all honesty, I haven’t worked that much in recent years. Then it came to him; it was “Love, Inc.”! He even remembered that I had a commercial running at the time and I was just busy. I think I had 6 auditions in the 4 days I worked on the show; so yeah it was a busy week. He then kinda mumbled something to effect of “yeah, you’re out there all over the place”. That’s always kinda weird to me because I feel that I just work occasionally, but I guess I have built up a little “body of work” and that’s the key – create some heat and build a body of work.

We did a quick rehearsal and my stand-in, Shawn, took over while they set up the cameras and lights. It’s always odd to have a stand-in because I prefer to be on-set and in the mix. So after about 4 hours I was finished; I actually worked about a half an hour total. I said goodbye to the crew and Michael who said “we’ll do it again” and was on my way. It feels great to have a TV director at his level know who I am.
"Brothers & Sisters" - Disney Studios - Burbank, CA
Since I haven't heard anything; I'm officially releasing myself from the "Budweiser" avail.....unless they call and book me of course! It's funny, I often hear actors grumble about being put "on avail" and that being "on avail" means nothing - which I think is a silly way of looking at it. Personally, what is more annoying to me is not getting a release from the avail from the casting office. It would be nice to get beyond the "on avail" stage every now and then, but being "on avail means a lot to me. It means my name is floating around my agents office more often and that is a good thing. Matter of fact I was at my commercial agents office this evening and one of the assistants said that very thing - that my name is often in the air over there. That's a great feeling in an office like KSA. '07 is gonna be hot!

Friday, December 15, 2006

Audition: “Verizon” @ Cathi Carlton Casting. This went OK; it should have been so simple, but I just couldn’t smooth it out for some reason. I hope to get a callback – I think I am really right for it; so we’ll see.

The official booking came through for “Brothers & Sisters”; I work on Monday @ Disney Studios. It’ll be my first time working at Disney. Yes!!!

It’s cool watching how the script is changing through rewrites. I auditioned with the sides my agents sent; after I booked I was sent new material and then sent an even newer version after that. They even completely changed which lead character I interact with in the scene.

I called one of my other agents this afternoon to tell her what the casting associate said about how my resume credits were listed. She was thrilled that the associate said it was “a great strategy”. We talked about it for a while understanding that every casting professional may not be supportive of the resume style. I have to say it’s really cool to be able to pick up the phone or walk-in and communicate with my representatives.

I was talking to a client during a consultation about how and when I stop by or call my agents. She asked me how I handle it; I responded “I just handle it”; I don’t tip-toe or beat around the bush about it. If I need or want to stop by, I do it. That’s they way it’s always been for me and I’ve never had a problem with it. Actually, it’s all they know from me; so it’s normal that they see me on a regular basis. I also know when it’s not a good time and I respect that they are handling careers – mine included. If they don’t have time to talk I don’t take it personal.

As of 6:30 this evening/Friday I am still on avail for the “Budweiser” commercial.

Thursday, December 14, 2006

YES! Just before noon this morning my agent called to inform me that I’m on “Watch and Advise” for yesterday’s audition for “Brothers & Sisters”. He said it looks good and that they just needed to get their schedule set before they could officially book. I should hear something this evening or tomorrow. I guess I should go pay those SAG dues. I don’t normally pay my dues before I go home for the Holidays are when I go home in the Summer. Actually, what I do is hope I “have” to pay them before I leave – that’s mean I booked a job.

YES AGAIN!! I honestly thought they had moved on with this spot and “went another way”, but my agent called to inform me that they put me on avail for the “Budweiser” commercial @ Francene Selkirk for Tuesday – Thursday of next week. Alright!

I did a workshop with several casting associates tonight. My scene went really well; my partner was an actress I’ve been consulting for a good while. Afterwards, one of the casting associates asked about how my credits were listed on my resume. I knew this would eventually come up. On my resume I only list the project and the director in most cases – very little billing. Most actors don’t list their credits this way, but it’s part of a strategy to help me move to the next level.

I feel comfortable doing it because I have two recurring credits on big network shows. If I didn’t have those two particular credits it would look as though I’d only done co-star roles and was trying to trick them. What I am trying to do is to help casting directors/associates/assistants think of me as more than just an actor who does co-star roles. After I explained my strategy to the associate she said it’s a pretty good strategy. I couldn’t do it without those two recurring credits. Of course others may not agree with it, but at the moment this is how I’m doing it.

Audition/Producers: “Brothers & Sisters” @ Bacharach/O’Neill Casting. This one goes pretty well. It had been a while since I auditioned for Bacharach/O’Neill Casting so it was great to get back in their office. As soon as Gillian took me to the audition room director, Michael Lange, knew we had worked together before. I knew he was directing the episode before I went in and was hoping he would be there, but I didn’t really think he’d remember me. I refreshed his memory of the episode of “The OC”; he cast me in 2 years ago. We shot out at the mansion in Malibu – we both remembered that place well. That mansion was just too much and it overlooked the Pacific.

Anyway, I read the material once and was on my way. There was one little point I wish I would have paid a little more attention to; a technique thing. All said; I felt good on my way home; actually I felt great. A top casting office and a top TV director knows who I am. Cool.

ADR session for “Monk” @ Sunset Gower Studios. The session went well; I was in and out in 15 minutes. When I finished I saw the next actor in the waiting room. He looked at me like he knew me; like maybe we worked on the episode together. As I got closer I knew I didn’t know him, but I recognized him - it was Sean Astin from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. I guess he was in a different episode - he sure seemed like a nice, friendly guy.

I went to see “Dreamgirls” tonight and really, really enjoyed it. I like to watch singers and this was full of singers; one of my favorite movies is “Moulin Rouge!”. I had an extra connection to “Dreamgirls” because I was a reader during the auditions. Every time a scene came up that I read I would get the chills – like seriously. When Jennifer Hudson was singing “And I Am Telling You” to Jamie Foxx’ character I was mesmerized. I had singer-actresses singing the same song to me during the auditions. That was a mind-blowing experience.

Callback: “Budweiser” @ Francene Selkirk Casting. YES! Another callback! Funny, I hadn’t been to this office for about 3 months and now I go there 4 days out of 5 – I can get used to this.
The callback went really, really well. I know it has little to do with whether I book or not or even get put on avail, but it sure feels good. Not much else I can do, but I’d love to book this spot. I might even start drinking Budweiser.

Callback: “Priceline” @ Francene Selkirk Casting. Yes! This goes really well. Not much more I can do. Afterwards the casting office called and added an extra date to the shoot window. They didn’t put me on avail, but they informed me of the extra date.

This is too funny. Remember that manager I mentioned the other day that asked me to leave his seminar? Well some people in attendance told me he went on and on about me after I left until it became uncomfortable for the actors there. I’m glad I had more respect for them to not make it about me or something other than what they went there for.

They reported that he thinks I take notes from him and sell it to other actors. Let me say this; and with all due respect to him. If I was taking notes about what he says and even attempting to sell it to other actors there is no way I would be a consultant on the business of the acting business. I’m not saying that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’m just saying that the one dimensional, safe, inside the box type thinking is not something I would think of selling to other actors. He is in no way, shape or form my role model of how to navigate this business – or my manager.

So, with that being said; I think this all may be just a…….misunderstanding.

On to better, more interesting things. I got a call today from the production of “Monk”; they needed to schedule me for ADR for my episode. This was great news because I didn’t know if it aired or not. He explained that their 16 episode season was to air 8 in the Fall and 8 in the Winter. In the first group they shot 9 and aired 8; mine was the one they didn’t air. He said it will air with the second set of 8 episodes starting in January. Cool. I go in to record Monday morning; that’s another paycheck too I think.

Audition: “Budweiser” @ Francene Selkirk Casting. This one went okay; I think I might have pushed a little. Hopefully, I didn’t push too much and I’ll get a callback.

Last month I contacted Nosotros; a Latino entertainment organization here in LA and offered to donate my time and be a guest speaker at their monthly membership meeting. They had no idea who I was so I had to sell myself to them; which was interestingly cool. Anyway, I followed up they said they would consider putting me on the schedule for early ’07.

Last night they called to see if I could be the guest speaker for this months meeting. I was thrilled to help out. It went really went. Their members are at various levels in their careers and I think I caught them by surprise with my very direct, alternative, inspirational approach to “The Business of the Acting Business”. One person even asked if I had a DVD or tape available for purchase. A great evening for all involved.

Audition: "Dairy Queen" @ Joe Blake Casting. Wow, a Sunday audition. I'll take however they come. I felt this one went okay, but not good enough for a callback. They were having callbacks a couple of hours later. Oh well...on to the next.

Wow, two interesting days in a row, but this time for a very different reason.

I've always attended acting related events around town. I did in New York and Virginia as well. Why? Because I'm an information junkie. I’m curious about everything - absolutely, positively.

Anyway, I attempted to attend an event yesterday, but was asked to leave by the guest. Why? Well, at first I thought it was a joke. Then I asked the guest why I was being asked to leave. Let me explain; this particular guest, a manager, speaks around town often and I attend if I can. During the events he usually called me out in some form or fashion, in a fun way, but no less embarrassing for me. It wasn’t “The Stephon Fuller Show”, it was his gig and I was a random actor in the audience. As a result others would assume I was a client of his – I wasn’t.

His problem with me attending was that he heard that I’m now consulting for a fee and he strongly disagrees with it. He went on about how I shouldn't be charging actors and that if I'm going to consult I should do it for free. This was in front of 25-30 actors.

I calmly listened to him with dignity; knowing that I have a tremendous amount to offer as a consultant and also that he's entitled to his opinion. But when he said something to the effect of "...do it for free and stop ripping off actors" I had to respond. "Ripping off actors?" What?! I say “whatever” to everything else he said, but to say that I need to stop “ripping off actors” was just stupid. What does he base that on in order to say it in front of 25-30 actors – some of which are my friends?

First, I had done a free event in the very same room less than two weeks ago and more importantly I'm doing anything but "ripping off actors". I very calmly told him exactly that, wished him a good day and left the room.

What was it all about? I don't know, but he's certainly entitled to his opinion. I must say, I would have expected him to handle it in a much more professional manner. The 25-30 actors there didn't attend this event to see a pissing match between him and I so I kept it short.

Could this be because I didn't accept his offer of management some time ago? I don’t know, I don’t think so. I had already hired theatrical, commercial and print agents for my team and didn’t feel it necessary to also bring in this management company at an additional 15% commission. If I’m going to pay 25% in commissions it better be for a good reason. Plus, I’m with KSA for commercials; why would I pay another 15% when I already have some of the best, most effective agents in the business on my team?

He thinks I gather information from him and pass it on to others; or sell it to others. Nothing could be further from the truth. Why would I do such a crazy thing? To be honest, the information that I hear at most of the events I go to is the reason why I need to consult actors and give them alternative ways of thinking. Most of what is passed on at these events, in my opinion, is “one-size fits all, general information”. What I offer is the complete opposite of that.
I remember one time, years ago, being on vacation in Virginia Beach and getting a call from his office asking if I was a groupie of his. I kinda laughed it off because I didn't want to draw more attention to me - that might have been a mistake. What it showed me was how off the mark he was about me. Groupie? Are you serious? What is there to be a groupie about? It's not like I subscribe to his philosophy of how the business works. That's pretty funny - or not.

It’s not that I think he’s a bad manager or anything like that; it just wouldn’t be a good fit for me - and fit is important. I’ve even recommended him to others over the years. I’ve kinda told myself that when I do decide to hire a management company it will be one that charges a 10% commission - yes, they are out there. I’ll shoot for a 10% manager when the time is right.

Half-pipe skills from back in the day - No helmet? Ha! It was the 80's.

I got some great news today. Last year an actress friend of mine had been urging me to move forward in my plans to consult actors on the business of the acting business for a fee. In reality, I'd been doing it for years, but I wanted to step it up a notch.

This young lady and I would often talk about the business in a general sense, but she wanted to have a sit-down and focus on her career. So she called and said in a very direct manner, "let me know what your fee is and when we can get together". She was right; I needed to move to the next level with it. She was the first person to actually pay me a fee for my time.

Even now we discuss every facet of her career; more because we're friends than client/consultant. During a consultation I'm very straight-forward and specific in my questions about exactly what a client is trying to accomplish. There were obvious areas in her business approach that I knew she could improve on. Her talent wasn't an issue; plus I'm not an acting teacher/coach.

One of the many things we discussed was the utilization of CD workshops. I didn't convince her to attend them; she was already attending them. Matter of fact I met her at years ago.

We also discussed her current agent/manager situation. In my opinion, she was spinning her wheels; it just wasn't working. She asked why I didn't have a manager; I told her I was managing myself. I don't have anything against managers; it's just that I largely feel that if I need a manager at my stage in my career I may really need a better agent. I have great agents through and through and haven't met a manager that I felt would bring more to the table than I already have. There are a lot of great managers out there but I'm not ready for that step just yet. Often times I find that actors give the power to someone else - I encourage actors to drive their careers and not wait to be driven.

Anyway, back to the actress, several months ago a certain great situation arose from one of the workshops she attended. I immediately knew how I felt it should be handled, but I can’t make anyone do anything. Every now and then the situation would come up and I would offer the same advice. Well, on this certain day I was a little “less nice” about what I thought should happen. I think it really clicked for her.

Within 3 days she had a meeting scheduled with a great agent and that agent got her an appointment for a film with a casting director. I didn’t get her the meeting with the agent. What I did was to consult her through the situation and prevent her from letting a great opportunity slip through her hands. This all came about from a CD workshop with a casting associate from a different office.

The film appointment, through no fault of her own, was cancelled; but the agent signed her about 3 weeks ago. She called me today to inform me that she booked an episode of “Criminal Minds”. I am completely thrilled for her! It’s her first job in two years and I must admit, I feel like my professional guidance made a difference.

YES!!! Callback “Jackson-Hewitt Tax Service” @ Ross Lacy Casting.

YES!!! Another second round shot. Cool. I'm so overdue for some bookings it's not even funny.

Callback: "FedEx" @ Kathy Knowles Casting. The only issue is that they are 15 minutes apart and one is in Hollywood and the other is in Santa Monica. I HAVE to find a way to get to them both.
The “Jackson-Hewitt Tax Service” callback goes great! My job is done there…for now. I got there early and it was running pretty much on time so I was able to get a good jump in traffic to Santa Monica.

There were quite a few people at the “FedEx” callback for the 6 spots they were casting. This one went really well too and I think I’m really right for it. So we’ll see; I’m determined to book something before the holidays. Ha!

So I had two really good callbacks today AND I even got several drops in that I didn’t think I’d get done.

Finally, I’m finished – for the moment. I got the rest of 23 out of 24 drops that I didn't finish yesterday done this afternoon. The 24th will get done eventually - maybe.

Audition: "Jackson-Hewitt Tax Service" @ Ross Lacy Casting. I did a commercial for them back in '94 in Virginia Beach when I was non-union and they shot non-union - I guess we've both come a long way.

Alright, I get to this audition and get the group explanation. All good, right? Wrong!!! I was so pre-occupied with “my busy day” that I didn’t hear what the session runner was explanation. I mean I heard him, I was just ‘out to lunch’. Bad Stephon!!

While we were doing the rehearsal I just stopped and asked the session runner to help me though it. Fortunately, I audition for him often and he didn’t give me a hard time. So then we go to tape it and I had to stop again. WHAT!! The funny thing about it was that I felt that I would pull it together somehow and it would have the right amount of realness to it – my voice, my realness. The smart thing to do was to stop and start over – own MY AUDITION…well, mine and my partners’ audition.

See, I knew the director, producer, ad agency and Ross Lacy the Casting Director wasn’t going to see all of my “tune-up work”; they would only see the ‘money shot’. Actually, that’s not totally true, some audition rooms have cameras watching them from the casting office. The last thing I wanted to do was perform the ‘money shot’ in the car later while doing drop-offs.

The last take was it. It felt great; a little off balance, my vision, my voice – worth watching. I felt weird when I got to my car; rattled and little embarrased. I was also proud that I had a say in the outcome, because as actors we do have a say – and I said it this morning – Good Stephon!

So I get home from the audition and my agent calls and asked if I made it to the appointment. I answer, “Yeah, I just got home”. She says, “Okay, they didn’t remember you coming in. “Really”, I answer. She says, “Yeah, no problem. Sometimes, the front office isn’t sure what the back office is doing.” “Okay”, I say. Then she asked, “Did you sign in and out?” Complete silence…………”Oh $%^#, I forgot to sign in and out! I’m sorry…….” Yeah, I was out to lunch……

Today was a really busy day for a very specific reason. It’s my mother’s birthday; I lost her 4 years ago last week. I knew if I sat around and did nothing I would be depresed…I don’t like being depressed.

What to do, what to do? I wrote up a route with 24 drop-off stops on it; from the far reaches of Northeast Burbank to Malibu and Venice. I didn’t expect to get it all done, but I was going to try. Since I had to move my car @ 8am for street sweeping I figured I’d start then.

My plan was to get a good chunk done in the Valley before going back home to put on a suit for my 11:15 audition at the Casting Studios. After that I’d grab a bite to eat and work my way through Beverly Hills, West LA and out to Malibu. Then I’d swing back through Santa Monica for my audition and continue to Venice and Culver City.

I think keeping myself busy worked. Of course I often thought about my mom, but I wasn’t overwhelmed with grief. To be honest, I miss my mom terribly, but I’m happy that she’s resting in peace. I couldn’t have imagined her, me or the rest of my family going through her illness for one moment longer than we did. Happy Birthday Ma! We love you, We miss you.

Audition: "FedEx" @ Kathy Knowles Casting. I booked here in late '03 and have gotten close many times since - it's time to revisit.
Alright, I get to this appointment and least this time I remembered to sign in. After a while the session runner takes 5 of us in for an explanation and he goes through it so fast that everybody’s head was spinning. We all just looked at each other and proceeded to take a shot at it. I can always tell if this particular session runner likes what you did; he doesn’t hesitate to let you know. He liked it and we did another one for kicks. Cool! Two really good auditions today!
I got 16 of the 24 drops done today. Whew!

My agent calls this morning to say that my December 22nd shoot date for "Privileged" that changed to December 8th has now changed to January 26th '07. That's a pretty big change; I wonder if they will lose some actors due to scheduling. Make me think I'll be working as a reader some more on this in the future.

While out preparing to do drops today I get a call from my agency @ 3pm to see if I could make a 4:15 producer session for a one day Guest Star. I wasn’t home and I needed to get home to shower, shave, put on a suit, print material, fight traffic to Universal, but I thought I could make it.

Audition “Crossing Jordan” @ LaPadura/Hart Casting. I didn’t feel so great about this one – bottom line; I wasn’t as prepared as I would have liked to be. The only time I really read the material was in the car on the way to the studio. That is okay to get the words down, but not enough to make real choices. Thankfully, we usually aren’t as bad as we think we are.

Audition/Tape ”Jericho” @ Bialy/Thomas Casting. YES! I had an appointment at this office about a month ago for a small co-star role on “The Unit” and passed with hopes of getting in for something more substantial. This is a recurring co-star role.

I read with CD Sherry Thomas and I was very happy with how it went. She wanted it real with a foundation – not a lot of “stuff”. I was pleased with the first read; she gave me some direction and I did it again. I felt like I was a bit young for the part, but I can’t do anything about that; I just wanna be solid and continue the relationship. The bookings will come soon enough. Who knows, maybe the producers will see something they can use.

I went to my fitting for "Privileged" this afternoon. While I was there I went in the director office and got a photo of the cast on the wall. I always like seeing myself on "the wall".

Back on a plane to LA. My layover was in Cincinnati and shortly after we took off there a medical emergency on the plane. A lady with two children had collapsed and needed medical attention. I must admit I got the chills when the flight attendants asked over the PA system “is there a doctor on board?”. There wasn’t. I played one in an ABC pilot, but this was for real. A moment later a young soldier volunteered to help.

I don’t know what had happened to the woman, but for the next 3 hours there was 1-3 people attending to her. It made me remember to enter my ICE (In Case of Emergency) entry in my new cell phone. I don’t know if the ICE thing is a hoax, but it makes sense to me so I do it. She had two children with her at 30,000 feet and she was totally incoherent.

Tonight I spoke to a group of actors in Virginia Beach about the business of acting. It reminded me of when I was starting out. It was a little different than my usual consulting because they aren’t in a major market yet, but it was great for them get a sense of what to expect if they choose continue in the business. I may return in March/April to do a full seminar/consultation session.

Today we went to two youth football games. One of them was my nephew’s team; they had an undefeated season and were playing a team from another city in a bowl game. It was a pretty good game, but they lost 13-7.

Father and Son

Every time I got back to the house I would enter through the garage rather than the front door. Why? So I could walk past my motocross bike. I just like seeing it – it gets me really excited. My older brother, Tommy, wanted to go for a spin. So I put on my new gear, got Todd and the three of us blasted up to “the field” to get in a few laps. It only lasted about 10 minutes, but it was SOOO much fun. It was definitely one of the highlights of my trips.

My family has had a couple of very, very successful Philadelphia-style hoagie shops for 26 years – Philadelphia Cold Cuts is the name of the business. Myself, I worked there for 15, so I’ve sliced enough onions for a lifetime. When I stopped by to get a bite to eat my brother Jeff, who runs one of the shops surprised me with some remodeling he had done. It’s just the beginning, but it’s what I’ve wanted to do years and years ago. I don’t know how much longer my father will be working everyday, so my brother will eventually take over. I was really happy to see this new beginning. I constantly think about being back there in Virginia Beach in the family business – maybe one day.

LAX here I come!!! I’m taking a little break to go to Virginia Beach to see my brother Tommy that lives in Prague and his daughter, Nikita, who I’ll be meeting for the first time.
Here I am arriving in Atlanta for my connecting flight home and who do I see? One of the actors I read with yesterday for “Privileged”. Small world - and getting smaller. For some reason when things like that happen I always feel like I’m in the right business.

YES!! I’m glad to be home. It’s always great to get away from the hustle of the big city. It’s nice to NOT have to parallel park so often; I’m pretty good at it since I used to be a valet, but it signifies congestion to me.

Two of my brothers picked me up at the airport and 20 minutes later I got to see my niece Nikita for the first time. She just started walking last week. As expected, she wondered who the heck I was and already had her favorite people since she had been in town for week. I had my work cut out for me.

I took my brother, Todd, to meet my agents today. It's funny, because it was like they already knew him. I guess I really do talk about my family a lot. I wanted him to see the people I talk about so often.

AGAIN!!! I get another last minute request from the director of "Privileged" to read with two actors this afternoon for the same role that they've been having a hard time casting.

I thought one of the actors was really right, really prepared and really good. After we read the second actor myself and the director had a nice little chat about what we saw - I'm always mindful to keep those conversations at arms length. It’s easy to get “caught up”.

Producers: “The New Adventures of Old Christine” @ Katherine Eckert Casting. This is a co-star role. My agents are trying to get me in for more guest star roles, but it’s going to take time. I don’t have a problem going in for co-star roles, but I won’t go in on all of them – just depends on the who, what and where.

I’ll definitely go in on this one for Katherine Eckert. Katherine was who brought me in for the pilot of “Good Morning, Miami” when she was an associate at Tracy Lilienfield Casting. They hired me for what they knew to be a recurring role without even sending me to producers. My agent called with the booking before I got home from the audition. I booked roles in 3 pilots that season; 2 of which got picked up. The other one that was picked up was “Life with Bonnie” in which Deborah Barylski hired me as well without going to producers.

As I was walking up to Bldg 136 on the Warner Bros lot I saw a gentleman that looked familiar, but I had no idea from where. He stopped and greeted me, but I didn’t know his name. It was Paul Walia, the actor who replaced me in “Ocean’s Thirteen”. How funny.

I go in and read and it goes well; I understood the piece and I’m right for it. It’s great to get back in to read for Katherine Eckert. On the way out I catch up with Paul. We’d never actually met, only spoken to each other on the phone and through e-mails. I could still tell that he appreciated how I handled him getting the role that I had in “O13”. It couldn’t have gone to nicer and more appreciative actor; funny I thought the same thing when the role was mine. I’m kidding! I’m sure I’ll get something else soon.

It seems to have really set Paul off on a roll of sorts. He did 3 jobs in 3 weeks. The very next day after shooting “O13” he auditioned for “Old Christine”, didn’t get the role, but was called back to do a voiceover, then booked a commercial for “Chrylser” now he was back auditioning for “Old Christine” again. Go Paul!!

Audition/Tape “The Daily Show” @ Zane/Pillsbury Casting. I was ready, I watched the show to get a since of the satire and the style of the correspondents. Let me tell you, it was work. This political satire doesn’t naturally come off my tongue, but I listen to enough of it on talk radio to know how it sounds. The first “scene” was going well until about ¾ of the way through when I stuttered..and stuttered..and stuttered. We finally just stopped and picked it up again were I stumbled. I got through the rest of it with a sigh of relief.

I took a moment before starting the second scene and another huge mouthful of dialogue; actually it was much more like a monologue really. I didn’t want to get rattled and then regret it in the car 5 minutes later so I found my center and proceeded. The second one went okay; I definitely had a few high points, but all-in-all I left feeling kinda “partly cloudy”. I do think I am “right” for it though.

So Caleigh, my theatrical agent calls me this morning and asked if would consider relocating to New York. The question caught me off guard, but after thinking about it for 9 seconds I said “yes, of course”. She was calling about a recurring role as a correspondent on “The Daily Show”. It’s very different than what I’m used to, but I confirmed and said I’m stop by stop pick up the material. One problem, the audition is scheduled for Monday 13th when I will be in Virginia Beach.

This project “Privileged’ that I’ve been a reader for @ Cathy Henderson-Martin Casting just doesn’t want to seem to end. It's cool with me because I get to read with actors again, but I'm sure the producers would like to get it finished. There is still one role that needs to be cast. So I was there today reader with about 6-8 guys. It’s amazing to see the process working in front of your eyes.

I hope they get it cast from this session. They even asked me what I thought and who I liked; I was careful not to get too involved in that conversation. It was a good short session and I think they saw someone they liked, but that is only the beginning - there's the whole negotiation part.

Cool, my agent got me rescheduled for tomorrow for “The Daily Show”. It’s FIFTEEN pages of dialogue! I don’t know if I’ve had that much dialogue in auditions all year!

Audition/Callback: “HBO Promo” @ Joe Blake Casting. I didn’t know this was a callback until I got there. It was a funny spot with a lot of profanity – I mean a lot. “Mofo this, mofo that”; I don’t normally talk like that so it was fun doing it in the audition. I got to reenact one of the more memorable scenes from “American Pie” – hilarious! I don’t how I looked them in the eye on the way out of the room.
