In general, actor showcases are designed for performers to hopefully get representation from Agents and/or Managers and to be seen by Casting Directors. I haven’t been in one because I, fortunately, have usually had effective representation. Tonight I attended the Cricket Feet Casting Actors Showcase produced by:

Cricket Feet Casting is a company run by our showcase producer Bonnie Gillespie, indie film casting director, author of Self-Management for Actors, and weekly columnist for Showfax.com. Showcase coordinator Eitan Loewenstein is a working actor, available through Origin Talent. In addition to being an accomplished theatre director, our showcase director Richard Tatum is a busy voiceover actor/coach and headshot photographer.

There were 35 very talented actors participating in 17 very well directed scenes – all in one hour.

The team did their homework in putting this event together and it showed. The scene transitions and music were great. Complimentary food and drink before and afterwards and get this - validated parking. Something else they accomplished was to smother the myth that it’s impossible to get industry professionals to attend showcases. The house was packed with CD’s, agents, managers and producers, etc.

Congratulations to all and I predict that many phones will ring with opportunities as a result of the showcase – good luck!

Callback: “Bank of America” @ Jeff Rosenman Casting. The callback went pretty well. Jackie “my wife” was so sweet beautiful and smart. I really enjoy talking about stuff other than acting with her – nice! For some reason I don’t expect to hear anything else from this spot. I don’t know why.

Audition: “Swiffer” @ Craig Colvin Casting. It went okay, nothing special.

Jenny, my print agent, informs me that I’m still on avail for the “Sprint” ad; I was supposed to hear “book or release” last Friday. One of these day I’m gonna……

In other news, my friend, photographer Aaron Wulf, finally has his new website up and running. Aaron shot my print card and was great to work with. He has an incredible eye for composition and is reasonable – check him out at https://www.aaronwulf.com/portfolios.html

Okay, I've decided on a new direction concerning my "not so great" attitude towards AFTRA. As one man and one actor I can't change AFTRA as an entity, but I can change my relationship with AFTRA.

My new attitude is to fully embrace the guild known as AFTRA and make it work for me. This morning I called my theatrical agents and asked them about daytime soaps. I’m not really talking about contract players; more like something recurring. I just wanna continue to be on set and act. This afternoon I did a mailing to the 5 LA-based soaps.

Doing a mailing was really weird because I hadn't done one in years. I've always been a "get out there in the mix" type of guy, but I didn't think I'd be able to drop-off in person at one of the studio lots so I just mailed all five. Hopefully, between this mailing and my agents I can get on the road to success.

Funny enough, I've been in Los Angeles for almost 9 years and I have never had an audition for a daytime soap - not once. Soaps haven't been my focus, but still. My focus from the very beginning was commercials and "Blue Chip" TV shows - 30+ commercials and an estimated 25 TV bookings later I'd say I've seen some progress. In '03 I added Studio films to the mix and have booked 3, but only appeared in one for various reasons. So time will tell if I can crack this daytime soap thing. Even in New York I only had one daytime soap audition in nearly 4 years.

For the last several years I've had serious questions about whether I wanted to stay in Los Angeles for the long haul. No, I don't have a college degree, but there are many other things I feel I could do well. Plus, I can always go to college if I want.

In recent months I've come to the decision that I gonna make LA and the entertainment business work for me – long-term. Well, I’m not necessarily saying for the rest of my life, but at least for the foreseeable future. I can’t deny that I have forged a great way to make a living. No, I haven’t made tons of money, but I have been able to pretty much do things “my way” and that is a great feeling. I’m excited. I have a lot of things on my plate right now and they all aren’t acting or entertainment related which is refreshing. I love business and “the biz”, but it’s so nice to get away from it. I wanna ride my motorcycle or go skiing!

I also spoke with my commercial agent about voiceovers. I used to have a v/o agent at my commercial agency, but when she left to go to another agency they closed the entire department. So I contacted her at the powerhouse agency that she’s currently at and explained my situation. I’m gonna take a voiceover class, get my demo together and submit it to her. Cool!

Oh well, obviously, I didn’t go to Cleveland over the weekend for the “ESPN” promo gig. I’ll be on the lookout for the spots to see who they chose, plus they were really funny.

Audition: “Mazda” @ Spot Casting. My partner and I had a good thing going in this one – just real and subtle.

This evening my print agent called to let me know that I’m on avail from the “Sprint” print ad I went in for last Friday. Cool! It would be great to book something – anything! Ha!

Print go-see: "Sprint" @ Ben Sealey Casting. You know how these usually go - quick, fast and in a hurry.

Audition: "Bank of America" @ Jeff Rosenman Casting. This was a lot of fun; in the spot my "wife" and I just bought a house and we were discussing our happiness in having done it – I plan to imitate at least part of that equation sooner than later.

Callback: "ESPN Promo" @ ASG Casting. Yes! One step closer!

So I enter the audition room that I've been in several times in recent months for callbacks and see the familiar couch where the producers, director, client and ad agency people sit. The only thing that was different was that no one was sitting on the couch - it was empty. As a matter of fact the entire room was empty.

I go in and sit in one of the 3 chairs while the other actors entered the room and there was a TV monitor in front of me. I could see about 6 people on the monitor - and they moving. I wasn't sure if they could see me so I waved to them - and somebody waved back.

The entire creative team was in Cleveland and we were performing through tele-conference. The read went well especially the improv part. So we'll see; I'd love to go to Cleveland tomorrow.

Okay, I did something really, really stupid yesterday. I had kind of a really busy weekend - for me. Ya know, several late nights in a row. Bottom-line is that I overslept this and was late moving my car. I was supposed to move my car by 8am and I didn't wake up until 8:40.

So I jumped up, put on some pants, grabbed my skateboard and rush to get to my car. Mind you, at this point I had only been awake about 60 seconds from a very a deep sleep. So I'm skating to the stoplight to cross the street and for some reason I crossed/skated in front of a car that I had a feeling was going to start moving forward very soon - like now.

Sure enough I was right and wrong at the same time. Right because the car did start moving forward and wrong because I shouldn't have been crossing without first seeing if "the coast was clear". As a result I almost got my a** ran the heck over this morning - seriously. And it totally would have been my fault - straight up. I probably scared the heck out the driver because I sorta came out of nowhere. My apologies to the driver of the white Mercedes-Benz - sorry.

Audition: "Safeway" @ Ross Lacy Casting. Good time; we'll see.

Audition: "Citibank" @ Ross Lacy Casting. The woman I auditioned with is also with KSA for commercials. I see her on TV all the time; we had a great time together.

Audition: "ESPN" Promo @ ASG Casting. This spot is with Jimmy Kimmel and LeBron James. Funny, funny, subtle stuff. It went great and shoots this weekend in Cleveland.

Audition "Applebee's" @ Sobo Casting. This went okay, I misunderstood what the session runner said, through his New York accent, when he instructed us what to do. Maybe that means it's time for an East Coast visit.

Anyway, he said "discuss your 'day". I thought he said "discus your date". So I start this improv about online dating and my partner just lights up, but then session runner stops and says, "not date, day".

LOL! We did it again and it was more what he was looking for. I got to go twice because they needed another man to read with another woman who didn't have a partner.

Audition: "Direct Energy" @ Craig Colvin Casting. This is when having an open schedule dedicated to my career comes in handy. This call came in @ 12:05pm and the appointment was 1:05pm. I guess, in a sense, part of my job is to simply be available for what might come up. It went well and I think I'm right for it.

Ya know I've been doing drop-offs since first arriving in Los Angeles almost 9 years ago. Even back when some would say it was a "waste of time and not a way to move your career forward". Even back when you could effectively do commercial drops; after all that's what led to booking a "Pizza Hut" national commercial which led to two additional "Pizza Hut" nationals. It also led to the "Honda" job that I shot 4 days here in LA and 4 additional days in Japan.

As a result of my methodology concerning drop-offs I find myself having to curtail the practice. Why? Because it's worked so well and in order to move forward in my career I need to alter my tactical approach. That doesn't mean I'll no longer do drops, of course I will, it just means I have to dig deeper and diversify my thought process.

Speaking of the "Honda/Japan" commercial I did almost 5 years ago. I decided to stop by the office of the producer in an attempt to reconnect. I didn't even know if they were still active or still at that address.

When I walked in the building I saw a drop box with the company name on it and I figured that was a good sign. So I go upstairs to the door of the suite and pause to get my head together. I needed to freshen my own memory of the experience; after all it was 5 years ago.

I couldn't see through the door because it was frosted; so I knocked.....nothing. Then I see a shadow walking towards the door; my heart was pumping, I didn’t know what to expect. The door slowly opens and it’s Ron, the producer that hired me 5 years ago. He seemed a little surprised to have a visitor; especially considering he had no idea who I was. I was prepared for that and had all the buzz words ready to quickly bring him up to speed. In an instant I was able to refresh his memory and, ironically, he said he had just worked with one of those producers just weeks ago.

I didn’t want to take up a lot of his time, so I gave him my headshot and was on my way. He then made sure my agent info was on it and said he would keep me in my mind if anything came up. Great! That’s all I was trying to accomplish. Sure, it’s a long shot, but I have to remember that I originally got the job 5 years ago while out doing drop-offs…I didn’t have an appointment. I still smile when I think that a drop-off lead to a trip to Japan.

It's 5 o'clock in the morning and I'm on the elliptical sweating my a** off. Why? Well, I'm trying to lose this last 2.4 pounds to get back to my fighting weight. The other day it was 1.4 lbs., then 1.8 and now 2.4. What is going on?!?!?! I think I'm going to have to reduce my food intake to one meal every other day. Or I could sell my car and start walking to my auditions.

I'm kidding. Actually, the reason I'm in Culver City on the elliptical @ 5am is because I have a free 50 minute massage scheduled in Encino @ 9am. I figured I'd do some cardio, weights, sauna and swimming before getting my body worked on. My friend Jan is an instructor at the National Holistic Institute/College of Massage Therapy and she needed some willing bodies for her students to work on. I was ready and willing for the 50 minutes of bliss - correction, free bliss. "Free" is key because messages aren't really in my budget; at least my Quicken program says so. Hard to believe I still have a gift certificate that an ex gave me 5-6 years ago for a full body massage @ Burke Williams. What the heck am I waiting for?

Audition: "Audi" @ Jeff Rosenman Casting. Why wouldn't I, at least, get a callback for this one? I'm perfect for it! At least in my mind. Well....I'm sure there are several reasons. Not being good enough isn't one of them. I refuse to accept that as the reason. I'll book again sometime soon....maybe this one... Getting ahead of myself? I should probably hope for a callback first.

Audition: "Miracle Whip" @ Skirts Casting. I had fun, but I think I might be too young for it. That's okay; it was just great to have an audition for anything. It had been more than a week since my last one.

As soon as I got home Caleigh called with a last minute appointment for a series regular role on a pilot - straight to producers. Cool!

She gives me all the info along with the script. It was a quick, fun read and I am perfect for it. I can SO do this role!

So it's time to get it on its feet. I walk down my street reading the material, making choices and guess who was behind me when I looked back? The Six-Million Dollar Man...seriously...Lee "freakin"' Majors was walking behind me! Why? Well this is Hollywood.

Actually, they were shooting his pilot "Me and Lee?" on my street today. Silly I know, but when things like that happen it really makes me feel like I'm on the right path and that this career thing is working out.

The more I worked on the material the more I felt the role was perfect for me or I was perfect for the role. I ran over to a friend's house to run lines with and he agreed that this role was written for me.

Later, as I made my way onto the lot at Paramount Studios I couldn't help but reminisce about when I booked my first "Frasier" episode. It was one of those fairy-tale situations that you hear about from a "friend of a friend"; the kind were you are booked and go immediately to set. I smile when I think of that experience.

Audition: "Dash 4 Cash" @ Meshel/Scott Casting. I was told that they are way behind in casting this and one other role and when I arrived that was very clear.

Every actor in front of me was in and out in a flash....and this was for a series regular role! The casting process is an amazing beast and fortunately I don't take it personally - at least not usually.

When I got in the room the casting director, whom I hadn't met previously, greeted me with a warm handshake. He immediately started talking about where he recognized me from; he knew I was the stage manager, "Robby" from "Good Morning, Miami". He also happened to see the recent episode of "Brothers & Sisters" I appeared in (little did I know that that would be the highlight of my audition.

Jeff then informed me that we'd only be doing the last of three scenes I'd been told to prepare.....it was over before it began. I hardly even remember what happened.

I learned a valuable lesson today; that I should have taken more control of "my" audition. It was nobody's fault but mine. Next time I'll do my best to slow things down so the CD and I can work on it. I had nothing to lose if I would've taken that approach. At any rate it was a pleasure meeting Jeff and getting into a casting office that I had never been in for…hopefully I’ll get back in soon for something else.

I MADE IT! Or more accurately "I'm making it"; because as we all know it's a journey not a sprint. Nevertheless it's another milestone for the books. Today marks 6 years since serving my last medium-rare burger, asking my last customer whether they wanted salt for their margarita and my last day getting off at 7 o’clock in the morning from the graveyard shift. Yup, on March 25th 2001 I took a 3-month leave of absence; which eventually turned into my resignation from waiting tables at The Hollywood Standard Hotel on Sunset Blvd…and I hope to never return.

I saved my work beenie from The Sandard as a reminder - 6 years and counting!

I left the job on a leap of faith and nothing more. I didn't have much money saved or any big jobs pending; I just felt that I needed to cut the safety net. I wasn't making that much money at the job and I felt my time was better spent doing what I came here to do. There were 4 specific things I wanted to do after I left the job; take a v/o class, a dance class, start my own website and finally start writing what has turned into this Long Ass Bio. I did all 4 things, but I never follwed through with the v/o stuff - might have to re-ignite that department. It makes it seem that I’m into this “acting thing” for the long haul huh? Looks that way…and I feel really good about it. I mean you never know, but every year is another year invested and the more acting I do the more I wanna do. It’s been a great ride thus far and I have every reason to believe it’s going to get even better.

I admit that I’m not completely thrilled with the big city life anymore. Actually, I often have serious conflicts with it, but I realize that it comes with the territory of my career choice. I have a great future in this business and it feels good to have something to show for it.

Speaking of my future; I’ve been thinking a lot about mine lately. Since I don’t work for a company in the traditional sense I have to be that much more aware of what tomorrow may or may not bring. A couple of weeks ago I attended an investment seminar sponsored by the AFTRA-SAG Federal Credit Union and last week I opened an investment account for myself. One of the best investments I’ve made has been investing and believing in myself when I started my pursuit as an actor in 1993.

Something else I checked into was my SAG Pension and where I stand as far as the earning of pension credits. I currently have 9 Regular Pension Credits and I need 10 to earn a pension at the normal retirement age of 65. Getting the 10th one shouldn’t be too much trouble, but I need to earn more every year to maximize its value in the years to come. I think I need 20 pension credits to qualify for continual health benefits at retirement. That is so far away that I don’t really wanna think about it, but in fact you kinda have to prepare for it. If I don’t do it nobody is going to do it for me. Trust that.

It’s weird thinking about things that are so far in the future when I have things on my plate TODAY that I’m trying to accomplish and even that stuff seems impossible at times. I know these things are anything but impossible, but it’s just hard to fathom sometimes. I shall keep the faith.

Last week I was on the elliptical at the gym, ya know, gotta work on keeping my girlish figure in tact…..that was a joke. Actually, I am trying to lose this last 1.8 lbs. I gained when I didn’t work out for 7 months straight…all the while others were telling me that I looked like I lost weight; go figure. I don’t care about the 1.8 lbs. it just gives me something to do. Who cares; I only “really” go to the gym to keep busy and it makes me feel like I accomplished something.

Anyway, while on the elliptical I saw the “Michelin” commercial that I booked last fall, but was left on the cutting room floor. When I saw it I just laughed and said “so close, yet so far”. I don’t know how I keep such a healthy attitude after so many things like that happen; especially with the whole “Ocean’s Thirteen” dealio. I think it’s because I’ve had so many great things happen thus far in my career. I’ll continue to soldiering on, making things happen and enjoying the ride.

Last week was really quiet. I haven’t had an audition for an entire week. Thankfully, that doesn’t happen too often; I’m sure it’ll pick up soon. Right?

Look what I found; this is timely. It’s an interview that was in The Virginian-Pilot, my hometown newspaper, September 20th 1997. It was while I was still living in New York. Now that I think about it I’ve been interviewed twice by the local newspaper. It’s a tough thing; this one was pretty accurate, but the second time made me wonder who they were talking about because it didn’t seem like me. It made me sound like this desperate actor that just couldn’t get anything going. I’ve never been that. I haven’t been in too much of a hurry to go through that again.

ACTING ON THEIR DREAMS YOUNG ENTERTAINERS FROM HAMPTON ROADS ARE SEEKING FAME AND FORTUNE FAR FROM HOME.

By Lorraine Eaton
LOUISE FULLER knew life in New York was going to be tough for Bryan, but she never expected to see her son crawling around the back of a trash truck. And she just knew he wasn't going to get into trouble with drugs.

But he did both, and she couldn't be more pleased.
Bryan S. Fuller of Virginia Beach is making a living in a business that is notorious for breaking humans in half. And he's doing it at the speed of light.

Bryan, who goes by the stage name Stephon (accent on the first part, thank you very much) is a familiar sight on television in Spain, where he plays a garbage collector in three widely played Pepsi commercials. He was one of the guys eating a Whopper in ``The Lost World'' Burger King commercials played in the United States this summer. He's acted in public-service announcements with New York Mayor Ed Koch, and later this year he'll appear on cinema screens for a few brief moments as a drug addict in ``Hells Kitchen,'' a film that stars Roseanna Arquette.

``Coming to New York, for me, it's been the best decision in my life,'' Bryan said from a phone booth at the corner of 56th Street and Sixth Avenue, with horns blaring in the background. ``I have to pinch myself, I just can't believe this is happening.''
Bryan, left Virginia Beach for New York in 1996 with $200 in his wallet, 18 months of evening acting school under his belt and totally unrelated experience in sales and in making subs at Philadelphia Cold Cuts, his family's business.
``My back was against the wall when I got here,'' he said. ``It forced me to perform, deliver and do what I had to do to survive.''
Unlike many filmland wannabes, Bryan has not been haunted by dreams of acting all his life. He graduated from Kellam High School without ever having joined the drama club - and got a job selling a line of surf wear as an East Coast rep. Later, he worked as a manager in his parents' stores and could have stayed on. ``For a time they expected it, but I never felt that,'' Bryan said. ``It's a great business, but I knew it wasn't my calling.''
Bryan had been ``interested in entertainment'' all his life but had never done any acting when he signed up for acting classes.

``Tenacity,'' said Sylvia Harmon, Bryan's teacher and owner of The Actors' Place in Virginia Beach. ``I can spot it when they walk in the door. This is a tough business. Work is limited. If you don't have tenacity, there's the door. It's 90 percent tenacity and 10 percent talent.''
Tenacity by the ton is Bryan's biggest asset, and that equals a non-stop life. It's why he has to call from a phone booth - he's in between auditions.

When Bryan arrived in New York City, he landed what he considers the worst job of his life - busing tables at the Harley Davidson Cafe. His new bedroom was so tiny that when he showed his parents a video tape of the apartment, they had to keep rewinding it to catch a glimpse of his space. He had to schedule auditions, acting classes and any jobs he got around his work at the cafe.

Now, Bryan's a waiter at the cafe and can schedule his work around his auditions and jobs. He lives in a $2,000-a-month Upper East Side apartment with two roommates he never sees. He's not even sure what they do for a living.

A call to his agent sets Bryan's week in motion. He goes to as many as three auditions a day. In August, he auditioned for a part in ``New York Undercover'' and for commercials for AT&T, Sprint, Western Union, Kodak, Federal Express, Mountain Dew, Burger King, Claritin and Aleeve.

Sometimes the auditions take an hour, sometimes they take seconds. He recently tried out for a Pepto-Bismol commercial. It went like this:
Casting director: Look like you have indigestion.
Bryan: Makes a distressed face.
Casting director: OK, look relieved.
Bryan: Looks relieved.
Casting director: Thank you. Next.
In between working, auditioning and classes in such things as improvisation and voice-overs, there are thank-you notes to be written for auditions, mailings of resumes and head shots to casting directors, and auditions for live theater, something that rarely pays but can get an agent's attention.

``Creating a buzz,'' is how Bryan puts it.

And, finally, there are the acting jobs, which, thankfully, are becoming more frequent. His five-day gig in Spain for the Pepsi shoot made him eligible for a Screen Actors Guild card, a plum for aspiring actors. A signal of real experience, SAG members are eligible for union wages, which can be double those of non-union workers.

Still, nearly 90 percent of SAG members make less than $5,000 a year acting. About 3 percent make $100,000 a year.

In 1996, Bryan made less than $2,000 in front of the camera. So far this year, he's made more than $20,000.

Right now, Bryan is in New Jersey rehearsing for the play ``The Darker Face of the Earth,'' a period piece about slavery. It opens in October and then moves to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in November.

The play should up the buzz about Bryan and prepare him for the next level: January auditions for next fall's television pilots.

Wow, how things change, but somehow remain the same! Happy anniversary to me!

I gotta tell ya; faith is a beautiful thing. I say that because today is the birthday of something green. Not "green" as in "cash"; green as in "cash money" aka "the green hornet" also known as my '98 Honda Accord Coupe.

Yup, it was 3 years ago today that I brought her home. My previous Honda, an '89 Accord, carried me 231,223.4 miles and was in serious need of rest, relaxation, rehabilitation and a new beginning with a new family.

I held out so long because she was getting the job done, I ain't no baller AND she had been paid off long ago. Plus I detested the thought of a car payment, but the situation was starting to be a serious drag on me in several ways. My driver-side door wouldn't open from the outside, the A/C wasn't working and it often ran hot among other things. Fortunately, I was still able to listen to my AM Talk Radio stations; without AM Talk I might have abandoned ship much sooner.

So I HAD to do something. The problem was that a couple hundred dollars in car payments was not at all in the budget...at all. I was running a really tight ship financially, but without a decent car in LA my ship was sure to capsize and THAT was not an option.

This is where faith really showed itself; I decided to go to SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union and get a loan to get a car. I was immediately approved and found the perfect, used vehicle within days. The only problem was I had no idea how I was going to pay for it…I mean not even the first payment; it just wasn't in the budget

I thought I'd have 45 days until the first payment was due, because that how it was with my last car. I soon found out that I only had 30 days....30 days to figure out how I was going to make this happen and 60 days until payment #2….90 days until #3 and so on…

It's funny how things usually work out if you give them a chance. I don't mean everything in my life, but a lot of things. I'm proud to say that I've been able to make each and every payment on time....and it’s almost paid off.

Audition: “Lowe’s” @ Craig Colvin Casting. This was fun; there was more dialogue than usual with a bit of improv thrown in. My partner and I bounced things off of each other nicely.

Later one of my theatrical agents called with an appointment for a small co-star on an AFTRA show. I'm still not a fan of the whole AFTRA dealio, although I know that one day I'll probably have to bite the bullet and join - that day ain't today.

My agent didn't feel it was a good idea for me to audition for it. I agreed and passed without too much of a thought. Saying no to the wrong stuff is becoming easier and easier - I think that is a sign of growth.

I also never forgot how great it is that I get to actually have conversations with my representatives about these "what to do and what not do" things. I know it sounds simple "in theory", but "in practice" most actors aren't so fortunate - Thanks Caleigh, Alicia, Donn, Rose, Erin, Brooke, Marie, David, Josh, Steven, Jenny and Steve - you gals and guys rock!

Audition/Pilot/Tape: “Chuck” @ Patrick Rush Casting. Originally this was supposed to be for producers, but Patrick told me they had been shooting really late last night so they would book from tape. Fine, it went great I felt. I found some extra little quirks for the character on my way to the office in the car. It’s a possible recurring role and I think I could be in the running to book. We’ll see. At any rate, it was a very respectable showing for this casting office that has hired me twice before. It’s all good.

Audition: “Kings of the Evening” @ Phaedra Harris Casting. This was the first audition I’d ever had that said “Star Names Only” – wow. There were definitely some “names” in attendance and I was right there with them. I didn’t get a callback. My agent said that there may have been an age issue, but I felt I did what I went there to do.

I originally had another pilot producer session for a casting office that has cast me in the past scheduled for today, but it was cancelled this morning. I’m not sure why, but I hope it gets rescheduled.

Audition: “Nabisco” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This was kinda interestingly cool because when I arrived there were gorgeous women all over the place….and me. I thought I was there for the wrong spot. Even when I read the copy; there were 5 women and not one man. So I asked if I was in the right place; they confirmed that I was. Cool. I’ll hang out with these women all day if needed to. They were funny, interesting, smart, had beautiful hands and they smelled great. There is nothing like the scent of a woman!!!

Anyway, when I went to actually auditioned I ended up being “Woman #4”. What! I’m not sure how or why that happened because if you met me you would know that I’m very comfortable as a man and prefer it, but this was a national commercial. Heeeyyyy! LOL! I sure hope I get a callback for “Woman #4”.

Callback: “AirTran” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This one didn’t start out so great. At the callback they made me the “hero guy” instead of one of the regular dudes and I did the same thing the hero dude did in the original audition. Well…it had changed and nobody told me; so take one did go so well. Take two and three were butta so we’ll see what happens. I’m glad I’m so empowered by auditioning better and better, because this “not sealing the deal” stuff gets old, but I hang in there and trust.

Audition: “McDonald’s” @ Craig Colvin Casting. Another really good one for the books; it’s a promo for the new “Shrek” movie I think. One of these days I’m gonna book for Craig. Right?

Okay, so I call my agent this morning too let her know that I wanna go in on the LL Cool J pilot. I tell her “it’s LL, I’m a long-time fan and I would love to pull a gun on him, yell at him and arrest him in a scene”. She says, “I don’t blame you; I’m a big fan too!” Cool. The only question now is “will I be able to actually make it to the audition”. I guess time will tell.

So I arrive at the location, check-in with the 2nd AD and she takes me to my room. The location is an old hospital so it’s a nice sized room with a couch, TV, bathroom, 2 25 pound weights, TV with DirecTV AND a desktop computer….with a high-speed connection! WHAT! Are kidding me? I’ve had some nice accommodations like being fully reclined flying over the Pacific on a Korean Air jumbo to Tokyo while enjoying a 4-course meal and staying at the 5-star Grand Bay Hotel in Miami, but I’ve never had an PC with an internet connection for a day job. Cool. So I filled out my contract, got into wardrobe/hair/make-up, checked my email and then opened MS Word and started writing.

I had asked Pamela, the 2nd AD, about the chances of being released to get to my audition during our lunch break. It didn’t seem likely since lunch was only 30 minutes and at the actual shooting location which is not at the hospital. So I called my agent and let her know. A moment later I got a call asking if I was available tomorrow if we don’t finish today – I am.

After 45 minutes or so I was shuttled to the set for lunch and then a rehearsal of the scene. I got to work with Ken Jenkins AKA “Dr. Kelso”. What a great guy!! He was funny and cool from the very start and made me feel totally at home. The director is Mad TV star Michael McDonald. It was fun to watch the machine that is “Scrubs” in action. After several hours, mostly waiting and laughing, we finished. I won’t be working tomorrow. So I missed my audition today, but that’s okay. Having a TV job on a top show is a good reason to miss it, plus with all the back and forth calling from my agent they know I tried to make it. It’s another casting office on my list that I’ve been trying to get into for a good while; this confirms that they know who I am and that’s a great place to be for starters.

Finally!!!

Audition: “Scrubs” @ Romano/Benner Casting. When my agent called with the appointment we had the usual “co-star conversation” of what to audition for and what to pass on; we discuss every situation as it comes; if it warrants a discussion. It depends on what show, what casting office, size of the role, which union, do I need the money or do I just wanna go in on it. “Scrubs” definitely a “Blue-Chip show”.

The role is that of 3 different salesmen, but in the audition they wanted it read as the same salesman. Personally, I think they are just doing that for audition purposes and will still hire three salesmen. Who knows. Who cares! It’s “Scrubs”.

I haven’t auditioned at this casting office since going to producers for “What I Like About You” on January 7th 2003. Wow, 4 years! I felt like that session went great and I’d eventually get back in again. I’ve been doing drop-offs and sending postcards ever since.

The audition was scheduled for 3:45 and it goes well except for the fact that I totally flubbed a word in the joke; I think I recovered pretty well, but still. I admittedly beat myself up over that for a little while afterwards. How does happen? You rehearse, rehearse, rehearse and then something totally different comes out of your mouth when it counts most. Oh well.

My agent asked that I call her after I was finished to let her know how it went. I left a message and she returned the call 25 minutes and it went like this:

INT – APARTMENT – DAY

Cell phone on table begins to emit the familiar “theatrical agent ringer” which is Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”. Stephon picks it up and sees the SCAW logo on the screen.

Stephon:
Hey Caleigh; how are you?

Caleigh:
Great, how did it go?

Stephon:
I think it went well. I flubbed a line, but I think I recovered pretty well.

Caleigh:
Okay, good.

Stephon:
There were any producers there; just Debby, Brett and Blyth. Matt wasn’t there.

Caleigh:
Oh really?

Stephon:
Yeah, so I guess we’ll see what happens.

Caleigh:
Did they have you read it all as one character?

Stephon:
Yeah, we read the two scenes separately, but as the same character.

Caleigh:
Okay. Would you even want to do it if they hire 3 salesmen instead of one?

Stephon:
I mean…….ya know…I uh...IT’S SCRUBS! I just wanna get on the show.

Caleigh:
Good! Because you booked it!

Stephon:
What? You’re kidding. Really?

Caleigh:
YES! And they hope you wanna do it.

Stephon:
Uh yeah I wanna do it!

Caleigh:
Great! It works tomorrow...

Caleigh totally tricked me. I told her that she’s getting a callback for her performance in tricking me! Within minutes of getting off the phone with Caleigh wardrobe and production from the show starting calling for sizes etc. Yeah!!

Oh yeah, it’s all over the press that series lead Zach Braff is reportedly getting a raise to $350,000 an episode if the show returns to schedule next season. They can’t possibly afford to pay him AND me so my agent opted to book this one under a “no quote”. That’s so if another casting office or production company wants to know how much I was paid for this job; the answer is “no quote”.

Twenty minutes later one of my other agents calls with an appointment for a co-star role in a pilot. I wasn’t at home so I couldn’t see the material and tell her yes or no. My gut was saying “no, I’ll pass”, but of course I wanted to read it first. She said to just let her know in the morning.

When I got home hours later and read the material I saw that it was LL Cool J’s new CBS drama pilot entitled “The Man”. The role I was to read for was that of a cop who pulls a gun and yells commands to LL’s character. Are you kidding me? Heck yeah I’m going in on this! I’m an LL fan for real! Oops, I almost forgot that I’m working tomorrow. Hopefully I can make the appointment.

Audition: "AirTran" @ Ross Lacy Casting. Nice, nice nice! Another one in the bucket. I'm so overdue commercially it's not even funny, but I have a feeling I’m gonna hit soon. Yeah, I've been saying that for YEARS!! Faith and confidence is an amazing thing. Hopefully they’ll bring me in for round two.

I received a note yesterday from Alicia, one of my commercial agents, which totally made my week. It was in reference to the article I wrote for Backstage. Alicia is the one who recommended me to someone who recommended me to someone else in New York to write the article. Wow, it almost seems like I'm starting to "know people who know people".

Alicia wrote:

That article should be required reading for every actor - I am sending it to the rest of the agents to show that some actors do indeed get the big picture - and it's no coincidence you are as successful as you are.

It's a pleasure being your agent.

Wow! That means a lot coming from a partner at one of best talent agencies in the business.

Audition: "Kellogg's" @ Lisa Fields Casting. This is a Canadian national spot; I don't think I've ever read for a "Canadian National Spot" before, but there's a first time for everything huh?

This one was a little weird. I was portraying a runner who was running in slow motion. Before we slated our names, the female runner was instructed to spray me with water that was supposed to be sweat….like in a sweaty runner. Yo! That was kinda sexy. I mean here is this attractive woman in great physical shape; wearing some kinda form-fitting outfit spraying me with water…I don't know where that came from, but I would love to do it again at callbacks and again on-set. Yup, you've got it right - hot, shapely, strangers of the female persuasion, in running attire, spraying water in my face drives me crazy. Anything for a check huh? Or a potential check. It went well; I ran really, really slow.

I left this audition feeling so strongly about how fortunate I am to do what I do for a job. I mean it has to be one of the greatest ways to make a living in the world. I really look forward to bigger and better things while enjoying what I have today…and I have a lot. And I’m looking to get more.

Tonight I went to a dinner for the family of Eric Gelman. Eric was a great, funny actor friend I used to work with in New York at The Harley-Davidson Café. He was super talented and just a joy to be around. At the dinner were 10-12 people that I also used to work with 10-12 years ago in New York. That is amazing in itself that so many of us are still in touch from a seemingly "random restaurant job" from a decade ago. I have to say that this was anything but a "random restaurant job"; it was one of the greatest jobs I've ever had and Eric was a part of that.

Ironically, we had been loosely planning a get together for the coming weeks, but then got word that Eric's parents were in town. At that point everything changed and we HAD to get together. Why? Because Eric Gelman, that wonderful son, actor, friend and funnyman was murdered on April 17th 2005. His parents are in town for the trial. We wanted to show support to his family.

This is and continues to be a heart breaking situation. His parents and other members of his family that I've met are the greatest…and truth be told……I hate that I know, first-hand, just how great they are. I hate that I've shaken their hands, hugged them and have cried in front of them. I wish I'd never met them; it tears me apart to see them go through this. I wish I could continue to see Eric and just “wonder” what his family is like. It's very clear as to where Eric came from; I see him in them. The only reason I know his parents and any of his extended family is because of this tragic situation. I don’t want to meet anymore of my friends extended family because of a situation like this. To the Gelman Family – you are forever in my heart and my mind.

Audition/Producers: "Close to Home" @ Schiff/Audino Casting. This is for a one-day guest star role. It went well and I'm perfect for it. I would LOVE to get this one.

Shortly after I get home @ 5:19pm I get a call for another guest-star appointment for "My Name is Earl". Yes!

Within minutes I had printed and highlighted the sides and was reading through it. The role was that of a prosecutor. My initial thought was that I might be a little young, but I remembered how unconventional the show is and just went for it. THEN! At 5:42 my agent called back to cancel the appointment because they made an offer to someone with a name. Oh well. Easy come, easy go. The cool thing is that they called me straight to producers for a guest-star role; which is happening more often for me. NEXT!

I met a really cool producer out of New York today through Casting Director Deborah Dion. Her name is Blair Breard and she’s making moves with some real players in the business. It’s another connection that I feel really good about.

Okay, one of my theatrical agents called this afternoon with info for a producer session for a co-star role in a pilot at one of the busiest casting offices in Los Angeles. She didn't submit me and wanted to know if I'd submitted myself, dropped off a photo or recently met someone from the office in a workshop. She just wanted to know what the deal was before confirming me for the session. The reason why was because it was a two-line role and the last time I was in that office it was for a recurring role. That doesn’t tell the whole story, but my team is trying to move forward.

Oh $?#}, it's about to get interesting. Why? Read on. You see one of the owners of this casting office called me at home yesterday about a mutual friend. It was a short conversation and we didn’t really discuss the business. I don’t audition at this office too much, but I have booked there in the past. So, when I told my agent about the phone call yesterday she said “reeealllly?”.

She knows that I’m on the constant hustle for opportunities, but I explained that I hadn’t recently met anyone from the office and I hadn’t dropped a photo there in at least the last two weeks.

I just checked my records and they show that I did a general drop for this project on January 22nd. I had the name of the project, who was casting, but no roles – I think it came from the Actorsite list. Although I wouldn’t have dropped for this particular role it amazes me how many actors think general drops are a waste of time.

Back to my agent; I told her I thought it was just a coincidence since I spoke to him yesterday. Who knows, I can’t be sure. Even though it was a producer session my agent and I agreed that I should pass on the project. So pass we did. The last time I passed on something at this office was for “Dexter”; they eventually brought me back in for something larger.

Audition: "Miller-Lite" @ Cathi Carlton Casting. This goes really well. There was one thing though; we actually had to hold "Miller-Lite" bottles. Now, you wouldn't think that would be so hard right? Wrong! Why? You see, I've never even had so much as a sip of beer, or any alcohol for that matter, in my entire life. I don’t even like drinking from a wine or champagne glass. The beer bottle just didn't feel natural in my hand so I had to keep glancing at how the other 3 guys were holding theirs. I so desperately wanted that "cool guy drinking-a-beer" swagger. I think I did okay in the end. Weird, I know.

Sometimes I actually wish I drank because it looks so "social and fun", plus I'm fascinated by the bottles. I can sit at a bar and just look at the bottles of liquor and watch people order drinks forever. I don’t know, it’s just so fascinating for some reason. I must say that I did not particularly enjoy selling beer, wine and liquor when I waited tables. It was too much to remember – up, rocks, salt, no salt, top-shelf, well, shaken, stirred, “how many olives?”, etc. WHAT?!
Other times, I witness what beer, wine and liquor can do to people and I think I’m gonna be okay without it. Hangovers, DUI's, $12 Apple Martini's and not being able to make morning appointments doesn't fit to well into what it is I moved to Los Angeles for. I often wonder how much of my accomplishments wouldn’t exist if I lost my edge due to drinking. I also wonder how many cool stories I would have if I was a drinker…hmmm I may never know.

Audition: “HBO comic project” @ Deborah Dion Casting. I have to tell you that this woman is one of the sweetest women I’ve ever met. I have a thing with casting directors named Deborah/Debra I guess. It’s a really, super small project that she’s doing and I’m glad she contacted me for it. Good to have that e-mail address on the resume. It went really, really well; Deborah was laughing quite a bit. I have a good feeling about this situation. Not necessarily limited to “this” project, but my relationship with Deborah on the whole.

Five minutes before arriving at the above audition I get a call for a callback for the commercial audition from yesterday. I’ll tell you there really is something to be said for being totally available for auditions. I remember when I lived in New York and I would have conflicts with auditions and work. It always worked out, but there were those times of angst about it.
Callback: “Sony” @ Francene Selkirk Casting. Okay, so here I find myself stripped down to my underwear for the second time in 24 hours. What’s up with that? I guess the universe got the memo that I’m working out again. Anyway, the audition couldn’t have gone any better than it did. I just think I’m too old, but I didn’t let that stop me. I’m not expecting to hear anything more about it, but you never know. My work is done – and done well I must say.

A couple of weeks ago I shot some photos with a photographer who isn’t new to photography, but looking to expand into headshots. We did a quick session and her name is Deborah at http://www.blackrhinophotography.com/ check her out!

Looks like me!

Audition: “Sony” @ Francene Selkirk Casting. As I’ve said many times; this is where I had my first audition ever in Los Angeles – July 29th 1998 - 10:30am. It was 12 ½ hours after moving to Los Angeles and I got a callback. I have yet to book there, but I get quite a few callbacks and avails – and releases from avails now that I think about it. That is gonna change soon – I’ve been saying that for years!

The role I was going in for was the dad in the spot – 38-48. There was also a wife and the son. The son was to be in his 20’s. As I looked around at who was there I felt like I fit right in the middle of specs for the spot. Not playing old enough for the dad, but too old for the son. After thinking about it I decided to switch categories and be seen for the son instead since I felt closer to being right for that.

Before switching roles I didn’t know I was expected to strip down to my underwear. WHAT?! Thankfully, I’ve been working on getting my LA figure back in check for the moms in the room! Anyway, the audition goes really, really well. I don't if I'll fall through the cracks as far being right enough for a callback, but I definitely did my job. After my group read Francene was talking about the spot with the session runner while I was getting dressed. I was trying to get out in a hurry because they were having sort of a private conversation about the auditions. On my way out Francene noticed me and said “Hey, that’s my blogger”. It didn’t hit me until about 15 seconds later. I don’t really know who reads this stuff, but somehow she is at least aware that is exists. Francene has a special place with me, plus she’s an East Coaster.

Today is the day I give blood at the SAG Headquarters. I used to have a minor phobia of needles, but after my mom passed away I made it a priority to give blood on a more regular basis. I remember once, while giving blood, I was on the phone with my mom and I got word that I booked a role on “Gilmore Girls”, but I couldn’t do it because I was already booked on another show. That was good day. I‘ve been trying to book “Gilmore Girls” again ever since!

Usually, I’m not the greatest at prepping myself for the blood thing; meaning I don’t always eat a meal in the morning of, I don’t always hydrate and I don’t get a lot rest before going in. I’ve never had a problem so I didn’t think too much of it.

This time I decided to do everything “right”. I ate and drank way more than usual yesterday and this morning and I slept like 8-9 hours straight which is really unusual. So I go in and fill out all the paper work, get my temperature taken, ya know all the stuff you gotta do. I’m in the chair, squeezing the ball and my blood is flowing out really well – I usually like to steal a look at the blood bag as it’s filling up. Why? I’m not sure.

When permitted I get up and proceed to the waiting area. It’s California state law that you have to stay there for at least 15 minutes to make sure you’re okay to re-enter the world. I was offered and accepted the usual juice and cookies – I wanted to do this right.

About an hour after I got home I was toast. I could barely function; I couldn’t do anything but lay down and lay down is what I did – for several hours. Normally, after giving blood, I’m ready to go the gym, ride my bike, attend a workshop, go to an audition or anything else I might want or need to do. So what did I learn? I learned that sometimes “the right way” to do things isn’t necessarily “the right way” for me. I think next time my preparation for giving blood is gonna be Jack & Coke on the rocks and a cigarette – Lucky Strike - no filter……

I’m kidding. I just don’t understand what happened. It’s kinda like me not ever wanting to get a flu shot – I’ve never had the flu and I feel like if I get a flu shot I will definitely get the flu - immediately. I’ll have to find a happy medium between my “rock-star” approach to giving blood and “the right way”.

Audition: “Las Vegas Tourism” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. I get here 4 hours early with hopes of being seen because I'm shooting indie film "Privileged" today. Plus I have another audition I'm trying to get to before my calltime.

I arrive. Oops.....at first, the session runner, Marvin, doesn't think I'm there for the right category; I'm the only African-American guy in the waiting room .....tickticktickticktick...then he says "ah come on in". Once we get to the audition room he checks the master list and, sure enough, I was on it for the "Hero guy".

This brings up something else that shows how great my commercial agents are and how well they know me. I always look at the "race check box" on the SAG audition sign-in sheet. So, so many times I am one of very few African-American males being seen. That convinces me that my agents don't look at me as simply a talented African-American actor, but a talented actor who happens to be African-American - a much better place to be in my opinion. It’s simply a much larger category. My theatrical agents do the same thing.

This audition goes really well and the spot is hilarious. I gotta tell ya, this guy Marvin, that runs the sessions at Kathy Knowles Casting is incredible. I must admit, it took me a couple times of auditioning for him before I got used to his style and learned to appreciate him.

At first he came off as kinda of bitter and callous; then "I" started to "get it". Marvin is my best friend in an audition; he's not bitter or callous he just knows WTF he's doing. He let's an actor know when he/she is on and when they are not. Maybe, since I’ve learned appreciate him is why I get a good number of callbacks and avails at this office.

Next:

I'm scrambling to make it from Santa Monica back to Hollywood to get to this next audition – and it doesn’t look good. I think they are going to be on their lunch break, but all I can do is try my hardest. I don’t like missing auditions.

So I get to The Casting Studios and “Studio 2” looks completely deserted. I could have just walked out then, but I figured I should at least ask someone. So I went to the front desk and explained my situation to the gentleman telling him that I think they may have already broke for lunch. Before he could say anything a woman walked behind me and said “…not yet, sign-in, I’ll take your Poloroid”. YES!!! I made it.

So I signed in and read the copy and saw that there were 3 scientists in the spot. Five minutes pass…..ten Minutes pass and no one shows up. What? So the session runner, Mike, reads it with me and it goes GREAT!! My head is spinning, but I was so happy to make both of auditions and still be able to get to the movie shoot on time.

“Privileged” – Parking - South La Brea –

I arrive and am taken to my trailer to get settled. I see one of the producers, Philippe Denham, and he caught my appearances on “Brothers & Sisters”. I also reunited with one of the other producers Keith Shaw; I spent many sessions as the reader for this film several months ago. Before long we are shuttled to the set for a blocking rehearsal. That is where I met who I’ll be working with, Arlen Escarpeta and Tatyana Ali. We did a few quick rehearsals and then it was back to base camp.

While Arlen and I were in getting our make-up done the make-up lady couldn’t remember which one of us was in “Weeds”. I didn’t say anything at first because I didn’t know if Arlen had done an episode too. One of these days I’ll get used to hearing that people actually see some of the stuff I’ve been on.

Anyway, we get back to set a while later for A LOT of takes and a lot of fun. Acting is always fun for me. Jonah Salander, the director, Arlen and Tatyana were a complete pleasure to work with. I was there quite a bit longer than I thought I would and it was cool I have a feeling I’ll be working with this group again in the future. Whoa!! What a productive day - two and auditions and a job. NEXT!!!!

Arlen Escarpeta, Tatyana Ali and me on set "Privileged".

Okay, so I call the ad agency in Chicago to get an update on the “Michelin” commercial. The person I usually talk to isn’t in so I leave a message for her. Not two minutes later my commercial send me an email informing me that I’ve been outgraded for the “Michelin” spot. What? “You’ve got to be kidding me?” I just stare at the email thinking it’s gonna change, but it didn’t. This was not the news that I hoping to hear. As I've said in the past; "booking the job" is not always enough.

I took a deep breath and called my agent. She had already requested a copy of the spot so that we could judge for ourselves. I told her it was possible that they got rid of all three engineers, but I’d be a little surprised if it was only me that was edited out. Could be though, we’ll find out when we get the tape.

Well, with that news, I’m not gonna be making any dental surgery decisions today or tomorrow. It’ll have to wait until I figure something out; it’s not like I’m bleeding, plus the pain is totally gone.

I’m not feeling so great right now so I decided to go to the gym – which I don’t particularly enjoy, but I knew it would help get me centered again. On the way I stopped by to see Debra and Tannis @ Debra Zane Casting. Since they cast “Ocean’s Thirteen” and I pulled out to do the commercial I wanted to update them of the latest development – plus I like them, they are nice.

We all got a great laugh out of it and I was already feeling better. They then informed me that the group of guys that I was to be with in the film got to go back for re-shoots. Wow, more days on the film. We all agreed that this is happening for a reason – I’m not necessarily sure what the reason is, but there is something behind it. It makes for a good story – I guess. Well, I’m proud to say that I’ve been hired 3 times by Academy Award winning directors…and it will happen again.

So on to the gym…I do my two hours of sweating, running, lifting and more sweating and when I get in the car I have a message from my theatrical agent. I usually leave my phone in the car when I’m at the gym because I just don’t want to hear from anyone during that time, but I should probably change that. I don’t really like being at the gym in the first place and if I’m getting calls it’s all the more reason to not lift those dumbbells or do those leg presses. But business is business and it would be worse if I missed a timely call. So I think the answer is to carry my phone, but turn the ringer off and check it periodically during my workout – yeah, that should work.

The message came in just 5 minutes before I got back in the car and it’s a last minute audition for a pilot at Fox Studios. It’s a co-star role and my agent wasn’t sure I’d go in, but she figured she’d try anyway since it’s a pilot. The call stemmed from meeting someone from the casting office at Actorsite recently. After the last couple of days I’d had of course I was going in. So I rushed home to get cleaned up to get over to Fox. When I saw the sides, I thought I was too young, but I wasn’t going to let that get in the way of my performance.

When I finally found the office on the Fox lot there was snow outside on the ground. Snow? Yeah snow. I actually walked over and touched it. I guess they were shooting something earlier that required snow. It reminded how much I love what I do. It’s the “playing” that is so fun. Snow on the ground in Los Angeles – you gotta love it.

Audition/pilot/tape: “Life” @ Megan Branman Casting. When it was my turn to go in to read the casting associate looked at me for a second and thought I was too young as well. She suggested I read another role as well. I paused and thought about it. Then she told me I was more right for it, but it was smaller. I paused again; then we both agreed that “no”, I shouldn’t read for the other, smaller role. My agents and I have this conversation often about trying to move up the ladder to get more guest star roles and beyond.

Even though I play a bit young for this smarmy lawyer the audition went really well. She thanked me for coming in and we also talked about moving up the ladder in my career; she even gave me hug on the way out.

So it’s 9am and I arrive at my dentist, Dr. Rashti’s office; I’m not in a great mood, but when I walk in a kid is waiting in the lobby. I like kids. Then everyone in the office starts talking about how they saw me on “Brothers & Sisters”. I don’t know why that still catches me by surprise anytime someone sees me on the tube, but for some reason it does.

Anyway I sit down beside the kid and say “Sup?” he say responds “Sup?”. That put me in a much better mood and within a couple of minutes me and this 8 year old were kickin’ it about motorcycles, video games, his stepmom – the artist, his favorite subject - math and video game cheat codes. We were definitely connecting until it was my turn to get in the chair.

So I’m in the chair getting ready for my cleaning and explaining the extreme pain I had been in. I say “had been in” because it had mysteriously subsided a great deal. I explained to Dr. Rashti how bad the pain was and she x-rayed the tooth and it looked fine. She poked it, put ice on it and examined it repeatedly and couldn’t find anything wrong. WHAT? Just yesterday I was damn near in a fetal position in extreme pain until my brother Jeff called and laughed at me. I don’t think I ever laughed that hard while in pain. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t in pain any longer; the Vicodin I had taken just to get to sleep last night had worn off.

Anyway, during the cleaning Dr. Rashti found some other stuff and took another x-ray and asked when I had my wisdom teeth removed. I thought about it for a second and then remembered it was when I was working at The Standard in like 2000 I think. Wow, I hadn’t thought about that for a long time. She then asked if one had broken off while being extracted. I thought…….Oh no, yeah, it was all coming back to me. One DID break and the dentist couldn’t get the broken piece out – which now makes no sense to me. I honestly don’t remember exactly what happened, but I remember it happening. Aw man!!

So I got the bad news that I need have surgery to get the rest of the tooth removed. I also was informed that I grind my teeth really, really bad and need to have a night guard made. This put me in a terrible mood, not like mad at anybody, just frustrated. I left there with my head spinning and just sat in my car damn near tears. I was beside myself. I needed a moment to clear my head – before my audition in a couple of hours.

The last time I had dental surgery I underestimated what I was going through and it all snuck on me. I ended up with a black eye and a swollen face - fo real. This is not nearly as serious, but still it’s just not what I had planned – dental stuff ain’t cheap and my Quicken budget program is asking question like “WTF?”. What to do, what to do.

Alright, I wasn’t going to call the ad agency about my “Michelin” commercial, but I’ll call them tomorrow to see what the status of it is. I don’t wanna commit to paying for this stuff until I can get a clearer picture financially.

Audition: “Xerox” @ TLC/Loree Booth Casting. I always like going here to audition; well I like going most places to audition, but I’ve booked twice here in the past for the legendary commercial director Joe Pytka.

I’m not sure how this went; I just wasn’t all there mentally, but for some reason I wasn’t too concerned. I felt I was right for the spot and they know I can do it and they’ve hired me before. I think I’m right enough for it, so we’ll see. So I left there just not too sure, but that’s okay. You can’t win ‘em all.

Oh no, I think I have a cavity…or worse. I’ve been in denial for the last couple of days about this slightly, nagging pain. Last night the alarm went off and was almost writhing on the floor in pain. Thankfully, I saved some of that Vicodin from my surgery last year. That’s stuff really works! I mean really. I still don’t get why some take it if they aren’t pain, but maybe that’s something I don’t need to understand. This afternoon after the gym and GSA Contract seminar at SAG I took some medication and got in the bed – I was in terrible pain. It felt like someone was drilling into my temple. I HAD to call 1-800-VICODIN. I have a dentist appointment tomorrow – hopefully I won’t be drugged up for my audition in the early afternoon – especially because I think it’s a Pytka spot.

Speaking of General Service Contracts (GSA). OMG! Those things are potentially vicious to say the least. I have one, but I’m not too concerned about it, because I don’t believe I’m in a relationship with vicious people. But some agents are definitely running game on people – educate yourselves folks!

Yesterday I rode my bike all they way to the top of Griffith Park to the observatory; 16.25 miles roundtrip – that uphill part was a BEAST!!! I did it without stopping even once. Maybe I’m in better shape than I give myself credit for. Next time I should actually go in the observatory; I haven’t been in there since 2001.
No news on the "Verizon" print avail. I really hope it doesn't get "too" interesting. Whatever is supposed to happen will happen - I suppose.

This blog completely blows my mind sometimes. I mean, I’m not a writer in the traditional sense. Even today I’m concerned by how my grammar and text flows. This bio/blog is more words than I wrote the ENTIRE time I was in grade school. When I started it I had no idea I would be read as widely as it is – however wide that is. Obviously, I knew I was putting it on the WORLD WIDE WEB, but still, I didn’t think it would turn into what it has. The consultation session I had yesterday stemmed from the young performers mother finding my writing from many, many states away and urging her daughter to book a session with me. Really? Wow!

Several days ago I got an email from a New York Casting Director that said this:
==========

Hi Stephon,

I found your blog while googling Xxxxxxx Xxxx and I'm hoping you have contact info for her as I'm trying to get her in for an audition! If you are still in touch with her would you let her know I am trying to get ahold of her:

Xxxxxx Xxxxx
Xxxxx/Xxxxxxxxx Casting
XXX Ninth Avenue
Suite XXXX
New York, NY 10036

212.123.4567 Tel
212.123.4567 Fax

Or if you feel comfortable giving me her number that would be great too...her SAG and AEA info is outdated.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

All the best,

Xxxxxx Xxxxx
==========

WHAT?!?!?! The actress she was looking for is someone I waited tables with 12 years ago at The Harley-Davidson Café in New York. The reason I wrote about her in my blog was because one of many times I was back in New York I went to see her in a play – actually I think I’ve seen her twice on stage while back in the City. I had a number for her and left a message, but I wasn’t sure how current it was because I hadn’t spoken to this actress in 3 or so years. So I called another New York friend her in LA to get a more current number and left another message. I then called the Casting Director to let her know that she should be hearing from the actress soon. The actress got the message and was thrilled to have gotten the info in a timely manner. I thought that was pretty cool.

On another note, I just found out that my friend, Lydia Blanco, just booked a guest lead in a pilot and is going to Vancouver for 10 days. How cool is that? I remember meeting Lydia when she got to town not to many years ago and was non-union. We have some conversations about who I felt was the single most important casting director to know in this town and it didn’t take too long for her to become SAG - through that very person. So much has happened for her since then. We both worked on “Good Morning, Miami” and “The Terminal”. One of these days I’m going to get to work in Vancouver; I hear it’s beautiful. Reminds me that I need to get my passport renewed Go Lydia!!

Airing: “Monk” on USA @ 9pm EST/PST. I shot this back in May; I thought they scrapped the episode, but they had split their season and that is the reason for the delay.
YES!! NO!! Yes. I guess. My print agent calls this afternoon to give me the news that I am on avail for the “Verizon” print ad from yesterday. I’m thrilled about the news, but of course there a little potential complication. One of the two days I’m on avail for is the same day I’m scheduled to work on the film “Privileged” that I booked back October. Huh? Why does this “scheduling thing” keep happening to me? I mean I’m not booked, but still. It was the same thing with “Ocean’s Thirteen”; book something months in advance and then when it finally gets close to do the job another job conflicts. Well…I have a great answer as to why this keeps happening. It’s because I am a working actor. The more I work the more I will have these issues. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish for scheduling conflicts, but it’s good that people know my name…at least a little bit.

I have to say that I am really enjoying this consulting thing. I am meeting actors in town that are looking for direction and I really, truly feel like I’m providing them with what they are coming to me for – alternative ways of thinking. I don’t pretend to have “the answers”, but I have definitely learned a lot along the way. Plus, I’m an expert on “my opinion” and I stand behind it.

Today I had a session with a young lady who is my youngest client to date and the some of the advice she’d had been given made me cringe. I mean terrible advice that equated to way too much wasted time in her young career. I was really glad we had a sit-down and I look at today as being the first day of the rest of her career. I don’t think some “industry professionals” realize the impact of some of the things they say to actors; especially actors arriving from other markets that have no reason to know any better. This is not an audition; it is someone’s career and future. You cannot get these wasted days back.

Print go-see: “Verizon” @ Gayle A. Means/Lynch Studios. Okay this is 5th time I’ve been in for “Verizon” in the last 5 weeks. Does this mean anything? I don’t know, but they should book a brotha soon. It went well, you know how print is; in and out in a jiffy.

Audition: “Geek Squad” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. Geek squad – YES!!! This should be right down my alley – ya know, the geek thing is perfect for me. I sure hope so; I get a lot of callbacks for this office, but it’s time to go the distance. Callbacks and avails are nice, but……….YES!!! This audition goes really, really well. I would love to get a callback for this one. The session runner was great and had me and my partner do it about 4 different times. The session runner @ Kathy Knowles Casting is great; I think his name is Melvin. He’s really “smart” funny and will tell you if you’re being fake or pushing too much on camera. It’s for “Geek Squad”, I’m perfect for that!!! Somebody should hire me soon; I’m due.

Oh no! I’ve decided to finally start working out again at the gym. Why? What’s the point? It’s been 7 months since I last hit the weights and I’m gonna feel it. I don’t particularly like working out, although many years ago I used to hit the iron 6 days a week - many years ago. I’d much rather be riding my motorcycle, skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding or on my mountain bike. I eat very little and VERY slow; although I love food. I sleep 4-6 hours a night; although I love to sleep. I think I’m just a workaholic; I cannot sit still.

I got through the workout pretty well, but I’m gonna have to eat more and drink more water; which is an issue for me. I weighed myself and found that I gained about 10 lbs., but funny enough I constantly have people telling me that I look like I’ve lost weight. I don’t get it; I feel a bit heavier and can tell that I’m a little “pudgy” and softer than usual. I’ll be back to my fighting weight really soon – probably by the end of the week! I know poor me.

It’s been pretty quiet for me lately audition-wise, but I’m not too concerned – it’ll come around. Actually, I hardly notice because I’m busy with a lot of different things. I’ve been writing some stuff and the consulting venture is taking off too.

Tonight I did my first radio interview; actually that’s not true; I did a piece for National Public Radio (NPR) last year. I met Rob Hollywood, who is based in Connecticut, through MySpace several months ago. He runs Inside Entertainment, which is an entertainment internet radio show. He contacted me and asked me to call in so I did, you can click here to listen to the interview. I come on at 11:20 seconds into the 30 minute program. Thanks Rob!

Audition: "Liberty Mutual Insurance" @ Laray Mayfield Casting. Yay! An appointment! I knew it would happen any day. It went really well; they wanted a lot of really small, subtle stuff and I gave it to him. Callbacks aren’t until February 20th and hopefully I’ll get one!

Drops, drops and more drops. I've logged a lot of miles in my trusty Honda recently. Hopefully, I'll book some more work soon and get some routine work done on it.

Wow, it's been an entire week since my last audition; that doesn't happen too often. I hardly notice it because I do so much running around anyway. Whether it's seeking auditions, actually auditioning or being on set I keep it moving no matter what.

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

Wow the last two days have been really busy as far as drop-offs go. I'm trying to make it happen and work on more top shows in larger parts. Typically, pilot season starts really late for me, but that's okay. I just wanna get in on whatever is out there for the most part. So tomorrow will be more of the same.

I stopped by to congratulate Deb and Tannis at Debra Zane Casting on their 8 nominations for "Dreamgirls". One thing I don't really understand is how a film can get so many nominations, but not one for Best Director or Best Picture. Kinda makes you how it all really works.

Debra asked me if I had heard about the new project that she and Tannis just landed; she figured if anyone in town knew it would be me. I wasn't sure but there are two very specific projects that I've had my eye on that I figure she'll be casting. One is still probably a year or so away, but I've heard very recent rumblings about the other one; so I guessed that one. I was right! She is going to be casting "IJ4"; that is a big deal. Locations aren't set, the cast is pretty small and it doesn't start shooting until summer. I'm not anticipated getting to audition for it since the cast is so small, but you never know; I do have some key things in my favor.

If you look closely and you might see me on “Brothers & Sisters” tonight 10pm EST/PST on ABC. ....and yes indeed I did, in fact, appear on the show. Actually, I knew I'd be on in some capacity because I did looping for it a couple of days ago. Cool, my list of "Blue Chip Shows" grows. "Brothers & Sisters" isn't "Blue Chip" yet, but I have a strong feeling it's well on its way.
I heard ALOT about my appearance on this show because I was fortunate enough to be in the promo that ran all week. I knew the show was popular before I booked the role, but now I know it's "really" popular. It just means more role for actors and that is a great thing.

Audition: "Verizon" @ Kathy Knowles Casting. What is going on with all of the "Verizon" appointments? This is the fourth one in the last month. I hope it's some sort of sign that I'll be booking one in the near future...or something else...or ANYTHING!

Audition: “Verizon” @ Popcasting. hmm...this one didn't go so great. For some reason, neither I nor my partner could get it together for this audition. You would have thought it was our first audition ever. Fortunately, the casting director gave us three takes...and I think the last one was the best...if they get rid of the first two....oops.

Get this - over the last several days I've been getting e-mails and text messages from different parts of the country letting me know that I'm in the promo for next weeks episode of "Brothers & Sisters". Cool!

So yes, I thought it was odd when production from the show called tonight and asked my availability to come in for a looping session today. I thought everything would have been done by now so close to airing, but evidently not. No problem for me. Looping means I'm at least partially in the final edit and I get to see part of it early. Oh yeah, of course I’ll get paid for my time. This'll be the second looping check this month. Unexpected checks with my name on them are always welcomed.

"The Terminal" aired on ABC tonight in it’s network debut. Cool. I saw myself a couple of times.

Nothing going on today; other than trying to figure where I should drop headshots at. Gotta keep it moving.

The phone rings at 10:04am; it’s an associate from Natasha Cuba Casting with an appointment to go on tape for “Short Circuitz” anytime before 12:30pm. On the message she said she was calling my agent as well.

At 10:22am my commercial agency calls with another appointment for 1:35pm; then calls back at 10:38 with a callback also at 1:35pm. The also gave me the time frame so I could get to the callback and also make the first time audition.

I check the sides for “Short Circuitz” and it’s a funny, but very short scene with Wayne Brady. A little while after that my theatrical agent calls with the same info; I didn’t mention I had already gotten the call. She was surprised I was considering auditioning for it. I thought the bit was funny and this casting office is usually busy, plus they called me in for a commercial a couple of days ago.

They told her that they wanted me to read for two different roles. I looked at the other role which was one line and we were not go to audition for that. So my agent called back to confirmed that the scene was really with Wayne Brady and that I wouldn’t read for the other role. My agent and I also agreed that if for some reason they offer me the other role that I am not auditioning for we would not accept. It’s was great to be able to talk to my agent about these things as we try to build this career.

Audition: “Short Circuitz” @ Natasha Cuba Casting. I read for the role of “Dexter” and it goes really well. After reading; the guy running the camera said “okay, cool now we’ll go ahead and read the other role. I said, “no, I think I’ll let it ride with my read for “Dexter”. He kinda looked at me funny and then said “okay”. I thanked him and left.

Callback: “Shell” @ Jessica J. Casting. I don’t know what else to say; I feel it went well and I’m right for it. It’d be nice to book something.

Audition: “Dodge” @ Alyson Horn Casting. Good time, fun audition that I’m perfect for. Hopefully, I’m not the only that thinks that.

So, all in all, a great, productive day. I woke up this morning with no appointments and ended up with three.

Audition: “Konica/Minolta-BizHub” @ Renita Whited Casting. The audition went well and I think I’m right for it. Callbacks aren’t until week after next and hopefully I’ll get one.

Audition: “Shell” @ Jessica J. Casting. This one went really well and I think I’m right for it. I would love to do a commercial with a NASCAR driver.

Audition: “Lexus” @ Natasha Cuba Casting. I think this went okay; I kinda jack it up a bit...sorta on purpose and sorta not. I just wasn’t feeling what was happening so I did my own thing. I guess we’ll see if it worked…or not.

I guess I’m back in my hustling mode – I was doing a drop-off today at a studio and the guard asked me what company I was with. I said, really fast “MySelf, Inc.”; he just looked at me. His co-worker died laughing; I told him to scribble it down real fast like a doctor and it’ll look legit. They let me through. I'm not usually so forward, but it seem to fit the situation.

I’m on a 5:40am flight back to LA. I’M NOT READY!!! I wanna ride my motorcycle one more time, play with my niece and nephew some more, go bowling with my sister again – how about park the car in a driveway? Simple things.

Anyway, it’s time to go back to work or at least the pursuit of work. It’s amazing when I go home because I TRULY CHECK OUT of my life in LA. I had a surprise on my connecting flight from Virginia to Charlotte, NC. One of my classmates from my very first class in Virginia was on the same flight also going back to Los Angeles. Her name is Joanna Canton and she is a wonderful actress. We met 13+ years ago and we are both still in the game…and actually making a living at it. I’m not really surprised, but at the same time it’s kinda surreal that we are doing what we set out to do so long ago. From VA to NYC to LA we are living the dream – go Joanna!

After landing at LAX @ 10am I went straight home to take a shower. By 1pm I had already stop by to see all of my agents. I always like for them to see me in the flesh when I return from out of town. I get to share about my family stuff and hear their stories too.

Tuesday, January 02, 2007

Wow, the gates of 2007 are open already. My commercial agent calls with an appointment for tomorrow…only problem is that I’m still in Virginia Beach. I’m not ready to comeback to the vortex of LA yet so I’ll have to miss this one.

Now I REALLY know things are moving why? Because I just got my first release from an avail this year – already!!!!! Yeah, I got released for the “Verizon” commercial. Geez, I hope I can somehow cut down on the amount of releases from avails I get this year. Obviously, I’m doing a lot right, but not sealing the deal as much as I’d like.

It’s funny because years ago I didn’t get as many callbacks and avails, BUT if I got a callback there was a good chance I would book. So I had the “brilliant” idea trying to increase my callback ratio. I’ve been pretty successful in that, but in the last few years I’ve booked fewer jobs…hmmm. I’m not overly concerned, but I’m used to getting that call saying I’ve been released…that isn’t good. I think my fortunes are going to change in 2007.

I called the ad agency for the “Michelin” commercial I did in October to get a status report. Supposedly, it’s still on schedule to start in mid-February; I sure hope so.
