I think it’s simply that’s she’s new to the game and didn’t really know that I’m not so new to the game. I also don’t think she knows many actors who have actually made a living as a professional performer for any length of time – so she assumed that I hadn’t either. I wonder how many other people might think the same thing. Who knows…
This is a long peak into my journey to make my way through Hollywood. You will learn way more than you ever wanted to know about me. Hopefully, it will be worth your time.

When I walked in the office I wasn’t sure if the property manager had already been alerted that I was leaving or not. She had; she told me the new leasing company had called and she gave me a great reference. Not sure why I was nervous about that because, yes, I deserved a great reference.
SHOOTING: “Greenpeace PSA” in Silverlake. This was fun and, again, proves to me that not everyone can do what “we” as performers do. Nope. Not everyone is interesting. Some may be interesting in a reality show sense; like watching a car accident (and yes, I do watch some of those accidents). But not everyone is interesting in a “talent” sense. The lead actor in the PSA we were shooting was organically interesting take after take, after take. A very talented man and I was honored to get to work with him.

On the one hand I’m not thrilled about moving to West Hollywood because it reminds me of being at work. Another reason is, and this might sound silly, but some of the area is on an incline; which could get in the way of my skateboarding. Don’t get in the way of my skateboarding MAN!!! Originally, I planned to stay in the Miracle Mile area…which is pretty flat…and doesn’t remind of being at work. What I mean about “reminds me of being at work” is that I spend a lot of time being a part of “the scene” because of where I work. I don’t think there is anything wrong with “the scene” it’s just that I’m not that cool and I get overloaded by it…although it can be quite amusing at times.
That said; I’m working on trying to get cooler. Ya know; like a cool dude that goes out for happy hour and stuff like that. I need to go out more and be more social – maybe moving to West Hollywood will help. I don’t know. Why is it such a struggle for me to get out and be a part of “the scene”? Actually I do know why.
On the other hand it makes a lot of sense to live in West Hollywood because it’s convenient to the two places I go most often and still very central as far as auditioning and the business goes.
Audition: “Greenpeace PSA” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This was a fun one. It was quite confusing, but fun nonetheless. The audition was held in Studio 9 at The Casting Studios. This is significant because I know that Studio 9, at this particular facility, is a callback studio. Callback studios cost a lot more to book…so maybe it’s a callback. I had my callback game face on.
Sure enough, as soon as I walked in, there was the session runner, director, producers AND the people behind the one-way glass…yup I could see ‘em back there! So, obviously, this was a callback.
I had the dialogue down and was ready to rock n roll. I had a great partner in Blair Hickey; Blair is the owner of Casting About – a great service for actors. We usually chat when we see each other so we were very comfortable with each other going in. It went really well for both of us; so hopefully they’ll hire us both. They should! Right!?!?
Oh yeah. I noticed they were having callbacks for the “KFC” spot that I read for the other day. That’s stupid! I mean why would they have callbacks without me??? I was incredible in the audition, looked great on tape and am perfect for the spot. Geez. Some people just don’t get it…lol!

Anyway, he and his sponsors are hosted today where the fans can actually ride with him on a local track.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that James Stewart is Black. Yup, he’s the first African-American motorsports champion. I have to admit that I smiled as I waited in the long line of cars and trucks to get in the parking lot because I truly believe that accomplishments like this break down barriers. There are young riders who will have James Stewart as their first Motocross hero…a beautiful thing. I think it helps us all get along.
James Stewart doing his thing – Clip 1 Website
Since my motorcycle is in Virginia I decided to just take photos instead. I had a blast, rolling around in the dirt trying to get a decent shot, but had to leave early and rush back to LA for a Saturday audition. It was really great to get out of LA, if only for a few hours.
Audition: “Time-Warner Cable” @ Ross Lacy Casting. Oh no. I totally bombed this audition. I mean completely. It was two different spots; both had quite a bit of dialogue. I’m going to be honest; this is what happened. I folded under perceived pressure; it’s as simple as that. This particular session director is one of the best in town I think, he explains everything very well and if you trust him he’ll steer you in the right direction. He’s also an actor and I’ve run the camera for an audition of his before and he has an incredible naturalness to his work. As I said there was a whole bunch of dialogue and they wanted us to spot on with it because they had already had a round of callbacks and this was possibly going to book straight off the tape. Exactly as my last booking, the KY spot, straight off tape. I guess I don’t always fold under pressure…of course I don’t.
Anyway, I just couldn’t get the words out of my mouth…at all. I felt terrible. Well, not terrible, but not good at all about what I left in the room. Ya know what else happens to me? As a result of knowing a lot of what goes on behind the scenes I get out of the moment. I’m a thinker, my mind is always racing. I’m shocked that I get anything done at all. I don’t know if it’s ADD or what, but lately I’ve tried to focus more and follow a simple task through to the end.
Afterwards I stopped to say hello to a friend of mine, Maya, who was running a session in another room. She said I was right for it and asked if I wanted to read for it. She explained that it was a test-spot and all that goes with that - I was willing to take the risk.
Audition: “KFC” @ Jeff Rosenman Casting. Amazingly enough, after just having a terrible audition, I had a great one. My partner and I played off of one another very well and I’d like to think we’ll both be at callbacks. I’ll let my agents know on Monday in case they get a call about it.

It was cool because it’s like getting a second bite at the apple. Many of us know that, often times, if you’ve worked on a show once you won’t get to work on it again – unless it’s the same role. It was tricky because I wasn’t sure if they remembered that I’d worked on the show before. The dilemma was whether to take the credit off of my resume or not. I opted to take it off my resume. I wasn’t sure it was the right thing to do because I didn’t want it to look as though I didn’t think their show was “good enough” to be listed. Truthfully, I didn’t want anything to get in the way of possibly getting the role and I felt that having already appeared on it could do just that.
So I enter the room and OF COURSE the casting director knew I’d been on the show. He knew the season and even the name of the episode. So then I got in my head about it not being on the resume.
Before reading, the two CD’s commented on how they were a little iffy on they way the scene was written. I gotta tell you I hate those scenes that have all kinds of physical activity going on and this was one them. It didn’t go so well; which was too bad because they’ve hired me twice in the past and were rooting for me. It probably wasn’t as bad as I think, but still…I think the saving grace was that they’ve brought me in numerous times and they know it’s not always going to go great. I’m glad to know I’m still on their radar.
Audition: “Kingsford” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This was fun and went well…thankfully. I could see a callback there. The first take was really good…just not sure the camera was actually taping. The 2nd take was pretty good as well…oh yeah, I think this one is for between 4 and 9 spots. WHAT?? Yeah, that would be nice.

It looks like the votes are in and the membership of SAG has ratified the theatrical contract that was offered by the AMPTP. Personally, I think this is terrible and a step in the wrong direction. I’m not sure why any working actor or anyone who hopes to be a working actor would support the contract, but I guess they have their reasons as I have mine. It is what it is and I have to move forward regardless on what contract we are working under.
The chances that I’ll have to join AFTRA become greater everyday – not a pleasant thought. I just don’t think they are on my side; hopefully, one day, I’ll feel different about it or maybe they won’t rep actors anymore – fat chance.
I think back at some of the decision I’ve made along the way and how they have affected me now; very subtle things in my approach to the business. I guess it’s one of the benefits of being “a thinker”, but I have to be careful of getting bogged down in that. I’ve done plenty of that, but I’ve also gotten a lot accomplished in one of the toughest businesses around. Another thing that I think has helped is that I’m doing other things these days not just “all acting, all the time”. I have to say that being on DL has been really great for me lately. I really enjoy the biz, but I really enjoy many other things too.

Normally, at this time of the year I’m preparing for my Summer sabbatical in Virginia Beach, but things are different right now…and for the better, meaning I’m getting better. I still would love to go home, but I’ll get there in due time; I’ve got other things on my plate.
Audition: “Bank of America” @ Dan Bell Casting. This consisted of an interview about music, if we played an instrument and/or what we liked to listen to. Pretty simple, in and out.
I voted NO on the proposed SAG Theatrical contract. I couldn’t figure out how to do anything else but vote NO. In my opinion, it’s a horrible contract and I don’t how anyone who has really read through it comes up with a YES vote. I say that with all due respect.
Fortunately, for me, I’m a vested member in the SAG Pension & Health Program; which means I’m eligible to receive a monthly pension when I retire. There is little chance of that happening under this new contract proposal under the same types of jobs that I became eligible through. Why? Because under the proposed contract residual income will be greatly reduced. It seems that a certain faction of SAG is saying that isn’t true, but I’ve experienced otherwise.
Most every year the amount to qualify for a SAG pension credit and the minimums for insurance coverage increase. It saddens me when I think of actors now that have way less of a chance of even qualifying for benefits – much less being a vested member. Although, for the vast majority of my career I have qualified for the higher Plan I insurance I only have to earn $10,200 to qualify for Plan II – which is not bad…for me. An already incredibly difficult business is looking at losing much of its middle-class. I don’t like feeling this way, but I’ve always been straight-shooting realist.
I’m not sure where voting NO is going to lead us, but I am much more sure of where a YES vote will lead. I, personally, am not in a bad position career-wise, but I’m thinking about the ones coming behind me. Just like the members did for me many decades ago. Please educate yourself and don’t let SAG sell you the VOTE YES stuff without seeing why so many actors are unhappy with the deal the AMPTP is offering.

While I was in a deep, deep sleep from working the overnight shift last night my commercial agent calls with an appointment for this afternoon. Thankfully, it was for right away because I might have fallen back asleep and missed it. I was exhausted.
Audition: “Group Health” @ Joe Blake Casting. I think this one went well and afterwards I got to catch with a friend from New York, Shawn Richardz. We’ve been in LA about the same amount of time and have been on the hustle ever since. We had some good laughs trading stories about “the game”. She is definitely covering all of her bases and making things happen. Hopefully, we’ll both get callbacks.
I also got a call from my print agent informing me that I’m on avail for the “Volvo” print ad I went in for 2 weeks ago @ Gayle Means Casting. I’m going to book a print ad one of these days. I’ve been saying that for years, but I still believe it.

I stopped by both my theatrical and commercial agencies today. I just wanted to show my face since I happened to be in the area. It was great to talk to them to get an idea how they are seeing things. Yeah, things are pretty quiet, but we are both thinking that will change as pilots orders have been put out and some shows are coming back early. I sure hope so; I’m really ready to work. It has been extremely quiet lately, but as we know, things ebb and things flow…I think I’m ebbing.

So the plan is to stay the course, but at the same time explore other areas of my life. I have so much to do in life and career and I'm looking to everyday of it Yeah, living in LA is tough for me at times, but I have a feeling that will improve greatly when I move to a new place. Ideally, I think I'm more suited to live in an area with a much smaller population and more space, but LA is where I'm at for now…and probably for the future.

Anyway, this is Derrick’s feature film directorial debut. The name of the film is “The Joneses” starring David Duchovny and Demi Moore. It was a rough-cut without color correction and final music, but I have to tell you I am really, really proud of Derrick. It looked great and it’s a fresh story that he also wrote. Not sure when it’ll be released, but be on the look out for it.
Print go-see “Volvo” @ Gayle Means Casting. You know how these are - quick, fast and in a hurry. Of course, I was looking at the photography equipment. I was in and out in a jiffy.

The audition went really well. It was one of those ones that seems like they could cast mostly anyone – I sure hope it’s me. There was another audition going on down the hall that I wanted to get in on so after comtemplating what to do I decided to call my agent to see what they could do. They did all I could ask; they immediately called the casting to, but didn’t get an answer. My agent told me to just ask and see if they would obliged me, but I got shut down by the woman running the lobby. In hindsight, I should have just worked my way in they way I know how, but I wasn’t feeling insanely lucky – I didn’t get seen, but I did the right thing…I think.

Print go-see “Wells Fargo” @ Gayle Means Casting. Oh No! After working all night last night I totally overslept right through my appointment time. My appointment was between 2 and 2:30pm and I didn’t wake up until 3:44pm. Not good. I was so angry with myself that I didn’t even break my neck trying to get there. I waas smoldering. I took a shower, got myself ready and made my way over and hoped for the best. Fortunately it wasn’t too far from my apartment. As soon as I got there my agent called to try and find out where I was and why I didn’t make my allotted time. I was honest and told her that I work overnight, full-time and simply overslept. Usually, I set my BlackBerry alarm and it works fine, but this time my battery had run out and in my delirious state at 6:30 am forgot to put it on the charger. I got seen and it wasn’t a problem.
Later, since I’m planning to move when my current lease is up, I went to look at a new apartment. I had just parked my car and looked out the passenger window as I was rolling it up and whom do I see? The elderly couple that the husband had run over the wife on his scooter last Summer. The adventure is here. I looked over at them, not thinking they would remember me. The wife just kinda looked at me, but the husband looked and smiled…but he always smiles… I’m not sure, but it might be loose dentures that makes him smile...or maybe his wife makes him really happy. A good lady can certainly do that!
So I got out of the car and walked toward them ready to explain who I was and the husband said “Hey!” I said, “Do you remember me?” He said, “Yes”. I said, “I’m the guy from back when you had the scooter accident”. He replied, “Yes, I remember you. Thank you!” His wife still didn’t know who I was so he explained in their native language and she perked up right away and said, “Yes! Thank you!” I said to her, “Are you okay? How are you feeling?” She said that she still had a few pains from the accident but she was okay. She also laughed and told me that he is no longer allowed to drive the scooter. They are just the sweetest couple… and yes, that is proof what a good lady can do for a man. Oh yeah, and I liked the apartment I looked at next door, but it’s way early in my search so who knows where I’ll end up.

Audition “Wells Fargo” @ Alyson Horn Casting. Hmmm…I’m not sure how this one went. I was a little confused by the instructions. They had me paired up with a wife and we were supposed to tell a story about home improvements, but the story was supposed to be true. Huh? I just met this woman; we have no truth. I wasn’t sure what to do so I made up my own story, independent of her, but it wasn’t true either. The story, in itself, went well, but I’m not sure it’s what they were looking for.
I told them I was a condo owner and that an improvement I was REALLY looking forward to was building a bar…for all of my top-shelf liquor. What?!? I don’t own a condo and I’ve never had any top-shelf liquor or any liquor for that matter…in my life…not even a beer. The good thing is I was totally believable and passionate about it, but I was a confused abut whether I did the right thing or not. It wouldn’t surprise me if I get a callback…or not.

It would be easy to say this is a bitter-sweet anniversary and ignore the this date; or even be upset by the fact I’m working another job to supplement and modulate my income, but it isn’t that at all. Especially a position that happens to be at the same place and position I resigned from many years before. It’s simply another challenge being thrown at me and I must say I’m handling it well. No, things aren’t perfect, but I’m not doing bad considering the economic climate and industry turmoil we are currently experiencing. I continue to feel like an exception to the rule(s). I view the decision to rejoin the regular workforce as the best and single most important decision I made in the year of 2008 - I kid you not.
Yeah, besides modulating my income it has given a much, much needed break from the business side of the business. I don’t mean “the business” as in the day-to-day hustle; I mean it in the more serious sense of the future of the business on a career level. We are at a real turning point and things, I predict, will be different in the future. Frankly, paying so much attention to what was going was becoming a real drag for me; so I needed to step back – and I did in a really big way.
I’ve never stopped auditioning or pursuing my career, I’ve just been keeping a very low profile. It’s different for me to be kinda MIA, but I have to say that it’s great to do other things I like to do besides so much acting-related stuff. I’m really excited about my new cameras and the notion of becoming a better photographer. I’m not looking to do it professionally; I just want to be able to one day take great photos of my wife and kids – hopefully I’ll have one and some. So things are good, very different from a year ago, but good nonetheless. I have a lot to be thankful for and I am.

One of the many goals of the studios is to end residuals or at least curtail them a great deal. If we, as actors, lose residuals we lose a major way of funding our pension & health plan. As a 12-year member of SAG with 11 years of pension credits earned that is not good news.
Many of the studios are airing their reruns online. Currently, they are not paying residuals for those reruns. Mostly, those reruns have commercial breaks in which leads me to believe that they are selling advertising. At the same time reruns on broadcast television are becoming less and less frequent. This is a serious issue for actors.
So, in the end, it was a slightly depressing outing, but I felt great about attending. After all SAG has done a lot for me and I need to do what I can to give a bit back.

Callback: “Volkswagen” @ Ross Lacy Casting. Yes, I got a callback and it went great. I knew the dialogue and had the right vibe for it. When my partner and I entered the room the creative team was having a little bit of a “behind the scenes” conversation about what to do in the spot from a production/casting point of view. Not stuff that actors typically hear, but having sat in on some of those talks both commercially and theatrically I picked up on it right away. I have to say that sometimes I think it might be better if I knew a little less about the process.
Anyway, the read went well. I think my partner and I played off of each other well. I was the straight man of the duo and he was more the “larger than life” element. When we finished one gentleman on the creative team asked me if I was the guy from the 1988 film “Diehard”; “Argyle” the limo driver. People have asked me that since the film was first released more than 20 years ago. I’ve even had people not believe me when I’ve told them I’m not him. I must admit that when I saw the film I could absolutely see why some people thought I was him. We are both of similar build, speak in a familiar cadence and look a little alike, but I’m not him…I swear.

Audition “USPS” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This seems like a pretty big campaign with a print element to it as well. It went okay; I was a little caught up in feeling that I wasn’t dressed properly. I’m not sure when callbacks are, but I’m not expecting to be there, BUT stranger things have happened.

It’s funny because I’ve always been intimidated by writing because I have such a hard time focusing, I don’t type well and dyslexia makes updating quite the challenge. That said, I really, really enjoy doing it and am so glad that I have kept up with it. Hopefully, someday I’ll have children and they will be able to read it and get a true sense of what their father experienced while pursuing his career.
I admittedly had a smile on my face after finishing the call with the reporter because, I mean, he must think I have something to say…I think I do. Right? I guess.

I’m happy that I actually got to shoot the commercial. I guess that means that I’m about 96% of the way to what I hope to be a 100% experience. It’s already been quite incredible whether the spot runs or not.
I arrived at JFK early so I asked about getting on the 8:30am flight instead of the 9:29, but it was completely full. The lady was wondering why they system didn’t charge me $15 for my checked bag. She was nice, but I don’t think she expected me to be flying first-class – that’s why my bag was free. That’s what she gets for assuming.
On the return flight I sat next to Randall Park, who’d I’d hadn’t met previously, but we ran into each other at the hotel a couple of nights prior. I had forgotten about how I was going to get home from LAX until I was almost to baggage claim. Right at that exact moment I looked up and saw a man with a sign that said “S. Fuller” and next to him was a woman with a sign that said “Park”.
They were the drivers to put the last touches on the last leg of our trip back home. I should always travel like that!
So I arrived at my apartment, took my suitcase upstairs and within 30 seconds was on my way to the casting office of the director meeting that had been cancelled. I knew I wouldn’t see the director, but I wanted to stop by and say hello anyway.
So there you have it; it was an incredible trip. Everything worked out perfectly. The only thing that might have made it better would have been if I was dating someone I would have taken them with me by requesting two coach tickets instead of one first-class ticket. Cool, so now I can add New York, to my list of Madrid, Miami & Tokyo to places I’ve traveled for work. I think next I want to go to South America, Australia or Africa…or downtown LA…I just wanna get another job, LOL!
Oh, I almost forgot to mention. This morning I received an email from an entertainment reporter from a major news outlet with an interview request. Ironically it’s the same news outlet that is my homepage on my internet browser. To be honest, I almost deleted it because I didn’t think it was anything of importance. In hindsight, the subject line was very clear as to what they request was pertaining to. I take that as a sign that I need to slow the heck down and pay more attention and not try to do 1,000 things at once – attention deficient gets in my way sometimes. I’m working on focusing better.

I’m chillin’ today; I decided to stay an extra day and hope that I didn’t miss anything back in LA. When production called initially, before they booked my plane ticket, I asked them to schedule me that way so I wouldn’t have to pay to change the ticket myself.
I caught up with my friend, Genine, who lives uptown. While having lunch with her my agent calls with an appointment for tomorrow in LA. It’s scheduled about 20 minutes after I’m supposed to land…hmm, not sure I can make that. Actually, it’s a meeting with the director and not an appointment to read material. It’s for Debra Zane’s office and I have a bit of a history with them.
My agent, Caleigh, said not to worry about coming back early and that they were going to send my demo reel over instead. Okay, but of course, I’m still thinking about getting on the red-eye tonight even though I really don’t want to. Or maybe I can get on an earlier flight in the morning.
Later I caught up with another friend, former LA-based actress turned New York-based Tanika Brown-Mckelvy. We had a great time catching up and laughing. She’s definitely doing her thing and not wasting time getting in the mix there. She’s even working with some of the top-notch commercial agents I worked with when I was in based there. It’s interesting to watch her use LA experience and apply it to now being New York based. Usually it’s the other way around. Good luck Tanika!
Last night, in the lounge at The W, I ran into a friend who lives right down the street from me in Los Angeles. It was crazy, we hadn’t seen each other for several months and we run into each 3,000 miles away. Her name is Celines Toribio she is doing her thing too. Before that I had run into fellow actor Christopher King who I met when I lived in New York. He then moved to LA for a few years and is now back in New York. Funny enough, ironically the friend that was with him had auditioned 3 times for the “KY Jelly” commercials too – small world.

I arrive on set, get set-up in my room, order an omelette and right away I'm called to wardrobe. This part trips me out every time it happens. Within 30 seconds of entering the wardrobe room with 3 women I've never met I've stripped down to my underwear. There aren’t places a man could pull that off in “real life” without getting arrested.
It’s really weird because I’ve always been very self-conscious about my body. Just like I was when I decided to wear a tank-top in the audition. I was self-conscious then too, but I wanted the job and was fortunately able to not be “self-aware”.
I’m a small, slight dude; always have been. So, of course, growing up I was constantly reminded how skinny I was and that I had a bird chest – ya know, all things kids say. The saving grace was I was a bad mofo on my BMX bike. Hells yeah!! Haha!
Just last week I was getting a new battery put in my watch and the jeweler thought the watch was for a woman. What? So I have skinny wrist. Leave my a** alone! Stop abusing me, LOL! Don’t get me started on my little ears….whatever.
So, Melissa, the wardrobe lady gives me 8-10 different tops and pants to try on – including a my own tank top and boxer shorts. I was really, REALLY hoping that I wasn’t going to be on national television wearing a tank top and boxers.
So I’m chilling in my room and the moment of truth comes. It’s Melissa with my approved wardrobe and you guessed it – they chose my own tank-top from the audition and boxer shorts. Why?!?! A few minutes later she came back with these super-duper-slim-sorta-lyrcra like booty-ass shorts for me to wear under the boxers. I’m like, “What the heck are these?” Are they for my wife? I mean I was already wearing black briefs under the boxers.
At this point I had to put my game face on. The choice had been made for me to be in shorts and a tank so I had to suck it up and be strong. I was ready to protest and go commando and shit, but thought that might not be a good decision. I’m just kidding – sorta. In the end; I decided to keep my briefs on and wear the super-duper-slim-sorta-lyrcra like booty-ass shorts over my briefs.
Can I talk about my wife in the spot? I was so curious as to who my wife would be. I could have just asked production, but I decided to wait and be surprised. I was looking around on the plane, but figured she could be based in New York. Sure enough, she is based in Brooklyn. She is: Broadway Actress-Singer–Songwriter-Musician-Playwright-Harvard Grad and all-around cool sista Eisa Davis! How did I get so lucky to share the stage with this one? My blessings continue…
The Director, David Shane from New York-based production house O Positive, was a complete pleasure to work with too - an actor’s director. Instead of saying “Action!”; he actually said “Acting”. How cool is that?
Usually, as actors, we hear very little about the behind the scenes part unless we book and even then you may not hear much. They were auditioning for this series of spots in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. I only auditioned once, but everyone else I spoke with went in 2, 3 even 4 times. It’s always fascinating to me as to how these things come together.
We did take after take. After take after take. I think we did more takes than all of my other commercials combined. Some of that may have to do with the fact that we were shooting on video instead of film. I hope they got what they needed to make it right…I think they did. Most of it was Eisa and I sitting next to each other on the bed, but there was another part that was a little…more interesting.
So there I was in a tank top and boxers; her in a little – ya know the little things women wear to bed that they look oh so fine in. I’m sorry I just love women…they’re just cool…and most everything about them.
Anyway, we are lying in bed as husband and wife and it’s just weird, fun, but weird, but that‘s the gig as an actor…thankfully, lol! Me, the skinny bird-chested brotha, with the wrists of a woman never expected to get acting work and be less than fully dressed. So it’s a real head trip for me. In the WaMu spot I felt that I was a little bit on display physically too. It kinda makes me feel that I should take going to the gym and staying in shape a little more serious.
I’ve been asked what it’s like to be in a bed scene with a woman. Of course the first question is “Is it exciting?” LOL! Sure, it’s exciting, but not THAT kind of exciting. I mean, I’m a professional and it’s important for your partner to be able to be professional as well. BUT with that said, I can see how things…enough. I’ve only done it one other time; meaning a scene in the bed with a woman – a revisit.
Eisa and I were wrapped, had lunch with the crew and I was taken back to Manhattan. I was completely exhausted, maybe a little jet-lagged and collapse in my hotel room. I woke up later and walked around the City and got on the subway to explore.

There were a few construction detours on the way to LAX and I guess the driver was trying to make up for lost time. By the time I got to the airport I was nauseous from being tossed around in the back – ugh! Lots of jack-rabbit starts, quick stops and swerving left to right is no fun in the back seat of a Lincoln Town Car.
With the exceptions of going through security and customs I really enjoy flying and being at the airport – especially flying for free. I’m a people watcher that’s generally more comfortable watching people than being watched by people and airports are great for people watching.
So I get checked in and, to my surprise, learn that I don’t have to pay the $15 for my checked bag because I’m flying first-class – cool, saves me $30. I was aware that the East Coast had a was due for bit of weather, but the gentleman sitting next to me said New York could get a up to 12 inches of snow. This was really good news. Other than skiing/snowboarding I hadn’t been in snow for a long time so I welcomed the inclement weather.
We landed at JFK about 20 minutes early, but waited 45 minutes on the tarmac for a plane to clear our gate; then another 45 minutes to get our bags. The car service called as soon as I landed to let me know they were on time, but I told them it was going to be a while. I was hoping the driver wouldn’t leave but I guess delays are a part of what they do.
I finally got to my hotel, The W - Lexington & 49th, as the snow flurries began to fall. It was great! After getting settled I put on my winter coat and went for a walk around my old stomping grounds as the flurries turned to snow.
Walking through Times Square was a really neat thing because I used to live in the neighborhood when I first moved to the city; 450 W 46th St. between 9th & 10th in Hell’s Kitchen. I used to walk through Times Square on my way to walk everyday.
I remember Times Square seeming so crazy and insane 14 years ago. I also remember the open air drug market, in the park ‘round ‘da way on my street; and the prostitutes, LOL! Wow, it was a little much for a youngster from the suburbs of Virginia Beach, but I handled it well. I would walk through Times Square at 2am on my way home from work vowing to one day make sense of it all. By that, I mean not feeling so overwhelmed by the City.
Truthfully, I didn’t have time to be overwhelmed because I moved to New York with $200 to my name. I had to hit the streets to make it happen or go to Plan B. Plan B was also to make it happen. Besides, how overwhelmed could I be making $3 an hour plus tips? Mo money, Mo problems. No money, No problems. I didn’t have any problems.
I remember back in 2002 seeing myself in a commercial on the Wrigley's Jumbotron in Times Square. I was so excited about that; especially that I only found out because a fellow actor saw it and called to tell me about it. So being back in NYC for work is a dream come true and I expect to do it many more times in the future.

I retrieved the voicemail with a slight cringe having no idea what to expect. It was Jamie, one of the assistants, from the agency. Right away I felt that things couldn’t be too bad because if it was it would have been the voice of Samantha, the agent handling the booking.
The next thing that happened was that Jamie took a pause before saying whatever it was she had to say. That pause didn’t feel good. My heart was racing – I mean RACING. The next word I understood her to say was “Contract”. My split second reaction was “NOOOOO!” The next word after that was “Expired”. LOL!! I’m thinking my contract for the “KY Jelly” commercial has expired and I’ve been replaced; just like the “Cheetos” commercial! Crazy I know, but after all the weirdness I’ve had with bookings in recent years I’m a little edgy okay, LOL!
Anyway, it turns out that it was all great news. Jamie was informing me that my commercial contract with the agency had expired and that I needed to set up an appointment to resign a new 3 year agreement. That’s good right? I’ve been with KSR (formerly KSA), one of the top commercial houses in Los Angeles, for almost 11 years and they want to keep the relationship alive. That is a reason to smile and not panic.
With that, it looks like I am really flying to New York early tomorrow morning; it’s actually going to happen. I’m really, really excited.

I really hope this happens. What I mean by that is booking the job is not always enough. Just because you book a commercial doesn’t mean you will get to shoot the commercial. Just because you shoot a commercial doesn’t mean you’ll be in the final edit. Just because you are in the final edit doesn’t mean it will run more than once. Not trying to sound pessimistic, but I’m a realist and these are all situations I’ve experience first hand in the commercial and theatrical world.
Of course, way more often than not my bookings have proceeded as scheduled, but in recent years I’ve experienced more than my share of weirdness. Usually, I try to look at it as the more I book the more likely weird things will happen…and that weirdness goes both ways; for better or for not so much better. Anyway, I should get my travel itinerary tomorrow so I know when, where and for how long. I’m also glad to say that my manager was great in making my missing work no big deal.

While driving on I-10, at on my way home from the audition my phone rang. The logo of KSR, my commercial agency, came on the screen. My first thought that there was a problem with the equipment at the audition and I needed to go back and audition again. That happened once at the office and I think about it every time I’m there.
I retrieved the voice mail message and mostly expected to hear the voice of Leah informing me that “we’ll get ‘em next time”; her way of telling me that I’ve been released from another avail. I hear that sooo often…it’s getting old.
Instead I heard the voice of Samantha, who actually I don’t think I’d ever spoken to on the phone. Samantha is my newest agent at KSR – she started about 9 months ago. The first word I remember hearing from Samantha was “congratulations….”. Yup, she then proceeded to tell me that I booked the KY Jelly” commercial!!! Right at that moment my life went into slow motions at 65 miles per hour. I couldn’t believe it. Like seriously, I couldn’t speak I was so stunned.
I got off the highway at the La Cienega exit, pulled into the Del Taco parking lot and sat in my car - speechless. It was about 5 minutes before I could even get myself together to call Samantha back to get the points of the deal. It was the first job I had booked through Samantha and I think I made it seem like it was my first booking ever - not commercial booking #35 or so for me.
It felt great to feel that way. No, I didn’t cry, but I was maybe a little misty-eyed…a little. She told me I’d be leaving for New York in a couple of days and production would call me directly to set everything up. Wow.
I always told my managers at work that I’d do whatever I could for them as far as filling in last minute or just being generally flexible. I also told them that I knew I would eventually have very last minute things come up in my career and I’d need their support as well. I guess I’ll see how this one works out.

The last thing I want to do is totally get used to being released from these avails. I mean, “it is what it is”, ya know. It means that I am doing something right – a lot right in fact. I’m not at all defeated about it; I know that I have to just stay the course and keep it moving. I’m pretty good at that.
Oh yeah, “no news, is good news”. Right?

Audition: “K-Y Jelly” @ Joe Blake Casting. This was a first time call straight to callbacks. As soon as I arrived I was paired up with “my wife”. Let me tell you this woman was absolutely beautiful. So I’m there in my pajama bottoms and a tank top feeling a little weird. Moments later me and this stunning creature are cozied up rehearsing our lines. The scenarios in the different commercials were all about making love and using K-Y products. It was interesting to say the least. I know I had fun; I think she did too.
By the time we actually auditioned my partner and I were a well oiled machine. It was a straight to callback session, but only the camera operator/session director was in the room. The director was on a monitor in front of us in New York. He spoke to me as though we had worked together before, but we hadn’t. No matter, it felt like there was a bit of a connection – even from 3,000 miles away. Anyway, the session went really well and I was on my way.

Man, I would love to book this spot - KY?? Yeah! That's not like saying "I just booked a Burger King" spot or an "IBM" commercial. Saying "KY Jelly"!! Hell yeah, that'll give me some much needed street cred; ya know some edge.

A couple of nights ago I attended a mixer for CastingAbout. I have to say that I really like these guys and this company. They just seem like good people, plus they provide a tremendous service for keeping up with casting directors, associates, assistants, TV/Film projects and the status of them, etc. They’ve just partnered with Breakdown Services which I assume helps them get the word out.
I’ve always had to use several different sources to maintain my database of the casting community. It takes a lot of work, but I have been very successful at it. Keeping track of the casting community is a tough thing to perfect, but CastingAbout makes it a little bit easier and more informative – especially keeping track of associates and assistants as they move from office to office. And they plan to cover New York in the near future.

First, I have to say it’s great to run into so many actors that I’ve seen on the circuit for years and years some even going back to my New York days. Even though we are all competing for a job that could pay tens of thousands of dollars there is a great sense of camaraderie in the air. Make me proud to be a professional in this field.
So it’s my turn in the room with the director and the rest of the creative team. Everyone seems to be nice and the director was especially friendly. There were two different spots being casts and after the first take the director asked me if I had the glasses that I wore in the first audition with before with me??? I told him “yes, and that they were in my jacket in the lobby”.
Typically, the answer to that would be “oh don’t worry, it’s no big deal”, but no; this director was willing to wait to see those particular frames. So I run out to the lobby to get my glasses and put them on and I quickly figured out that contact lenses and glasses…on the same eyes…and at the same time do not work so well together. I didn’t want to take the time to remove my contacts and hold up the session that was already running behind schedule.
My vision with glasses and contacts was crazy! But I made it work for me; it was almost like I had a secret. In fact I did have a secret – my secret was that I couldn’t see SHIT!! Thankfully, I knew the dialogue.
Anyway, I felt that the callback went well and the director seemed particularly interested in what I had to offer, but he might have been that way with everyone.

Tonight in my acting class I was watching myself on tape and noticed that it was quite difficult to see my eyes through my glasses. It felt a bit disconnected to be honest. I wonder if that could be helping me get released from some of the gigs I’ve been close to booking…an interesting thought. I like my current frames, but they do give me a headache at times. I’m not too much of a fan of contact lenses on a regular basis since getting an eye infection back in New York. I don’t ever wanna go through that again.

Honestly, me and my agent think I play a little too young for the role, but she submitted me anyway and I got an appointment. After reading the casting director explained that he didn’t know if the role would remain in the script as it had been cut before and put back in. At any rate it was a great showing. After the audition I went to my acting class, which went really well.

I’m tired, really tired. I got off work early this morning; my call time is early this morning.
I’ve been running like crazy for the past several weeks including a little travel and I’m going home for thanksgiving next week. It’s all good though ALL GOOD; I didn’t move to LA to watch paint dry. So I’m not complaining; I’m just voicing stuff.
So I get to the studio and my little trailer and wardrobe and contract are ready and waiting for me. Shortly afterwards the 2nd 2nd AD leads me into the hair and make-up trailer. The first people I see are Sarah Oh and Ellen Pompeo in their chairs preparing for the day of shooting. The two ladies in charge of hair take a quick look at me and say ‘Ha! You’re easy and perfect; see you on set”. Then I go to make up and she takes a look at my skin and says “oh you’re fine, I’ll get you later”. I’m done; free to go back to my trailer to finish filling out my contract.
30 or so minutes later there is a knock on my door and it’s time to go to set for a quick rehearsal. I walk out to the golf cart and Sarah Oh is getting into the front seat while I get in behind the driver. Sarah turns around to introduce herself and says, “we’ve met before…haven’t we?” I was really caught by surprise, but yes, we had met before – we worked on “Arli$$” together on February 6th, 2001 @ the Andrita Stages. I could not believe that she remembered me.
Then the “Grey” in “Grey’s Anatomy” – “Meredith Grey” series lead Ellen Pompeo slipped into the back seat beside me and introduced herself. Sandra immediately told her that we’d work together, years ago and we made the short trip to the stage to rehearse.
We did a quick blocking run-through and then again and one more time before 2nd team took our places to do the camera stuff…I even had a stand-in. I was back in the trailer for a bit and then the call for make-up came. Shortly after that we headed back to the stage to shoot the scene.
It was fun! It’s always fun. I really look forward to the day when I’m acting on a daily basis as a regular on a show…it’s got to be one of the best jobs in the world.
After about 3 or 4 different camera setups we were finished and I was wrapped for the day. Success! It was a smaller role, but I’m thrilled to have booked it. The really funny part is that 2-3 years ago I may have decided to not go in on it, but times change.
Check this out. On a medical show like Grey’s Anatomy one would imagine that they would go through scores of lab coats over 5 seasons. Right? Random tech here, random doctor there. I thought it was interesting that my lab coat had my character’s name embroidered on it and not on a removable tag. I wonder if they do that for all characters because, I assume, that after embroidering a lab coat they couldn’t use it again for another character. That would be a lot of lab coats. That makes me wonder if maybe my character might return to the show in the future…hmmm. Who knows, I sure don’t…one can only hope.

The smartest thing I did in 2008 was to re-join the workforce. Well, “re-join” isn’t accurate because obviously I’ve always worked, but I mean as in a day job. The biggest and most important thing it has done, outside of earning extra income, has been to give me a distraction away from “the biz” as much as usual.
Don’t get me wrong I really enjoy the entertainment business, but there are so many other things I like to talk about as well. Being at “the job” occupies my mind with other things and fills my schedule. Don’t get me wrong I’d rather be doing more commercials and TV/film gigs, but it wouldn’t change my hunger to have conversations about other things
YES!!! I’m so excited to be going to North Carolina to ride my dirt bike today. Unfortunately, my brother Todd was unable to go, but I took my niece, my nephew and his friend with me. I didn’t ride all that great, but we had a ton of fun and that is what’s it’s all about.
I hadn’t ridden since the last time I was home in July ’07. That was when I blew the crank in the motor and I told myself that I wasn’t coming back home until I could afford to get it repaired. One of these days I’ll be able to ride at least a couple of times a month – that’s going to be great!

YAY!! The woman who I helped yesterday with her SUV and such called and left a message of thanks for going through the effort of returning her keys. I was really glad to hear from her and that it all worked out.
Six more days until I go home to
Audition: “TurboTax” @ Jeff Gerrard Casting. This is a last minute thingy that needs to be cast in the next day or so. I went just okay so I kinda doubt I’ll be hearing anything more from them. I’m not too happy about that because I haven’t auditioned for Jeff in quite sometime; he hired me many years ago for a “Pizza Hut” commercial that I didn’t even have an appointment for – I didn’t actually crash the audition; I just didn’t have an appointment. My photo used to be on his wall in the office. Hopefully, I’ll start getting back in a regular basis in ’09 for his projects.
I think mentally I’m spent and ready for a vacation; so basically I’m just working everyday until I go to LAX and leave on a jet plane…
Monday, December 22, 2008
While waiting to back out of my parking space there was an unusual amount of traffic in the parking lot. I waited patiently until finally I was able to get in line to exit the lot. After a few moments I could see what the issue was; it was an SUV that, for some reason, wasn’t moving forward. There was only one lane leaving the lot and one lane entering and so when cars were going around the immobilized SUV to exit it would turn into complete gridlock with horns blaring and drivers swearing.
As I eased my vehicle around the SUV I could see that there was an exasperated woman who looked like she could really use some assistance. I wasn’t in a big hurry and I decided I was going to see what I could do to help. I illegally parked around the corner and jogged back to her vehicle.
I asked the cute Latina woman what the deal was and she said, through her accent, that she’d run out of gas. So I looked around and offered to try my best to push the SUV out of traffic so that she could at least get out from under the pressure from the other motorists, none of which offered help – at least not that I saw.
This begs the question from me – How do you not help someone in distress? Sure, there are plenty of legitimate reasons. Maybe you’re running late for an appointment. Maybe it’s a dangerous situation. Maybe you’re bleeding from the head and dealing with your own stressful situation. I don’t know, but barring things like that I feel that we HAVE to help one another – we have to. Why not? No, I don’t stop for every stranded motorist I see, but I try to help when I think I can and even when I’m not sure if I can. Sometimes just the act of letting someone know that you are concerned is enough to make a situation better than if you hadn’t showed any concern at all.
Anyway, if you don’t already know ; I’m a pretty small dude – 5’8” and I weigh less now then when I graduated high school - 145 pounds on a good day wearing only my smile. The Black Ford Edge SUV has a curb weight of 4073lbs. plus it was on a slight incline – advantage Ford Edge.
After helping the woman get the vehicle into neutral I attempted to push. I think I actually heard the vehicle say “wassup punk”; my answer to that was to really give it my all and push super, duper hard – the Black stallion chuckled. Shortly after that another man pitched in to help and we were able to move it together, but since there was no power steering; the woman couldn’t turn the wheel enough to back it into the parking space. So I say, “aight, let’s go forward!” She turns the wheel better this time but still not enough and we hit the curb going forward. We were beginning to look like the 3 stooges, but hey, at least we were tying to solve the problem.
At this point another man showed up to help and asked the woman to let him steer the vehicle. We try to go backwards again but hit the curb - AGAIN! Mind you we are completely blocking traffic in both directions, but one more attempt going forward and we finally got it into the spot. She was very, very thankful that several complete strangers came to her aid.
I asked her if she called AAA or some kind of service and she said that she had left a message with a friend who had not called back yet. I offered to drive her to the gas station down the street to get some gas so she could be on her way and she accepted my offer.
We arrived at the gas station and the attendant pointed her to where she could buy a gas can. The woman thanks me and says that she can walk back to the vehicle since it wasn’t too far down the street. I said okay and good luck and was on my way.
It wasn’t how I wanted to handle it; I would have preferred to “finish the job” and make sure the “damsel in distress” had gas in the vehicle, the vehicle started and I could witness her drive off into the sunset. But I went against my instinct and let her have her way because I didn’t want to be creepy and insist to offer help that she didn’t feel she needed.
So I drive back over to my side of the hill and run a few more errands before going to picking up some friends at LAX. Before going to the airport I wanted to check the flight status of their already delayed flight. Right before going into my apartment I glanced down on the floor of the passenger seat in my car and I see something that wasn’t familiar to me. I leaned over to get a closer look and to my horror it was the Latina woman’s full set of keys that she left in my car. Oh $#!!!
Without even thinking I started my car and headed back to Studio City – in the complete opposite direction of LAX. I didn’t know the woman’s name and she didn’t know mine. The only thing I knew was that she was going to be late for work and that she worked on the Hollywood side of the hill.
LA traffic agreed with me as I breezed over the hill back to where I left her about 90 minutes earlier, but both she and the vehicle were gone. What to do, what to do. The only identifying thing attached to the vast array of keys was a Los Angeles City Library Card bar-code thingy.
So I drive back from Studio City to Hollywood to LAX, but I decided to stop at the library branch on Sunset. I didn’t want to just leave the keys with them, but I wasn’t sure how to get any information from them without seeming to be weird and stalker-like. When I walked in the library there were two uniformed police officers on patrol. I told them the story. The agreed that maybe we could swipe the card and get the woman’s contact information to get her keys back to her.
The library attendant swiped the card and a warm feeling came over me when the woman’s’ contact information came up on the screen complete with a phone number that we hoped was current. The attendant proceeded to dial the (818) number and guess what? It was missing a digit!!!
So I left the keys with the police along with my phone number asking the woman to call me so that I would know if she got her keys back.
Moral of this long a** story? Label your shit. I do just that and people over the years have made fun of me. Whateva. I remember flying home to Virginia Beach one year and on the last leg from Newark to Virginia I was using my $400 PDA and fell asleep and unbeknownst to me it slid off of my lap when we landed. An older woman several rows ahead of me found it and gave it to her son. He called me and FedExed it back to me. Label it!
I hope this woman calls me so I know she got her keys back. I guess that’s what I get for not “finishing the job”.

Anyway, the audition was an industrial and I thought it went pretty well. Maybe I wasn't what they were looking for because I don't think I connected with the "powers that be" in the room all that much. Funny enough the two other actors I read with felt the same way. I just said' "you never know what they are thinking, maybe they loved us right away and didn't need to see anything more - who knows". At any rate I was very happy with my performance.
Callback "Verizon" @ Ross Lacy Casting. Yes, I knew I would make it to callbacks! One day I’m going to book one of these commercials; I promise I am!
