Audition: “Sprint/NFL” @ Martin Casting. This was a fun and I had a conversation with a really sweet and kind actress while waiting to go in…and we mostly talked about things not related to the business.

Audition: “Better Off Ted” @ Thomas/Adler Casting. I think this went well, but I might look a bit young for it. Not “be” a bit young, but “look” a bit young for it. Funny enough it was a pre-read for a small co-star role. A few days ago I went straight to producers for a recurring role. I ain’t tripping though; it’s all good...especially these days in the economy. It’s good that casting offices still know who I am; that is a huge victory in itself…and who knows, maybe I’ll get a callback.

Audition “National Grid” @ ASG Casting. Simple, question and answer type of situation and I didn’t even trip over my own words.

Audition/Producers “Ghost Whisperer” @ Donna Rosenstein Casting. This is a role I should book – plain and simple. I rarely, in my opinion, have been more right for a role than I have for this one. I think it’s the type of role that will move me to the next level in my career. Not because it’s some type of great role per se; it’s just a role that I can walk in the room and be with little effort. Typically, an actor is typecast that way and then is able to expand from that base of a character in his/her career…at least I think so.

In the room was the director, 2 writers, a producer and casting. Everyone was very friendly. I had one question and then did the scene the way I committed to in rehearsal, got direction and did it again a whole different way. As I was reading it the second time I could feel that they were engaged and listening. I walked out feeling really good, plus the director liked my pants. This is a potentially recurring role and I’m glad they brought me straight to producers for it. No matter what happens I feel that they will continue to bring me, but eventually it’s time to get the job. I think I booked “Monk” on my sixth time in the room.

Audition: “Old Dominion Freight Lines” @ Stuart Stone Casting. Simply dialogue situation; I killed it! Just kidding. Not really, I delivered in that room I tell ya, plus I’m from the Old Dominion area in Virginia.

Audition: “24” @ Pagano/Manwiller Casting. This one didn’t go well and I’m, admittedly, a little upset about it. It was one of those situations where I wondered whether to commit to the realities of all the stuff written in the scene or, as they say, “just read it”. I chose to go with the realities of what was on the page and that wasn’t what they were looking for. I don’t think I over did it, but when do you know when to ignore certain parts of the writing? I mean it said there was freakin’ radiation inside the vehicle. Do I ignore that? Radiation seems pretty serious to me. Anyway, I probably came off as too melodramatic when I read it the first time, but I guarantee you it will be filmed that way. THAT’S why is so important to know what serves an audition situation versus being on the actual set shooting the scene in hair, make-up and props…two different beasts. NEXT!

I’ve been moving to a new apartment over the last 10 days or so and today is the day that I finally turn in the keys of the studio apartment where I have lived for the last 11 years…yup 11 years. That’s longer than I’ve lived anywhere other than the boyhood home I grew up in. I didn’t plan on doing it over such a long period of time, but I’m glad I did. I think the new apartment had been vacant for a minute so they were eager to get me on the payroll.

It worked out well because I didn’t have to take the weekend off of work like I had planned. I just did a little moving everyday over the 10 day period when I had the energy. Let me tell you, these overnight shifts are a beast. I do not, I repeat DO NOT recommend working graveyard shifts. It’s like going down a one-way street against oncoming traffic. That said; I have definitely made the situation work for me. I devised a plan some time ago and I have to say it’s working really well. At the same time I have to look at other phases of the plan, because I have no plans of doing this indefinitely…physically I can’t.

As I was making the final trips back and forth to my car I became more and more eager to finish, turn in the keys and be on my way. On the way out the door the very last time it hit me that this chapter in my life was over. Forgive me for making this move into such a dramatic thing, but I guess it’s all relative because it has been a major thing to me. I’ve been nervous and extremely anxious for months- headaches and all. I remember when I moved here from New York; I had a headache for 6 weeks.

Anyway, as I was about to lock the door for the last time I stopped dead in my tracks. I put the items down that I had in my hands and re-entered the apartment. It looked exactly as it had on June 28th, 1998, my birthday. That was my last day of my LA trip for my agent meetings. I prayed that I would be approved. I remember being so excited about living alone, having a little natural light that I never had in New York and moving to the next chapter in my journey. Looking at the empty place made it very clear as to why I wanted to live there. I guess I was “stopping to smell the roses”. It almost brought tears to my eyes..almost.

Next stop; the rental office. The property manager was very nice and wished me well. I got in my car, screamed with joy that it was over and gave the middle finger to the “No Parking from 6am to 11pm” signs for the next day. FU!! No parking signs!...I’m serious…I did 11 years.

The old parking spot...at least for March 16 '04. There's my old white Honda with "for sale" signs on it in the background.

The new parking spot...cold chillin'....Underground parking was one of the "must haves' along with central air, carpet and of course a bedroom with a door.

Eleven years ago today I left New York on an ATA flight to Chicago on my way to Los Angeles to continue the journey of my acting career. While on my layover in Chicago I called my new agent, Alicia @ KSR (formerly KSA), and informed her that I was flying standby and didn’t know exactly what time I’d land in Los Angeles – tonight or early in the morning. Either way I told her that I would be ready to rock n roll by 12 noon tomorrow. She answered that she had an appointment for @ 10am….let the games begins.

That first week in Los Angeles Alicia got me 3 commercial auditions and, in return, I gave her 3 callbacks. I didn’t book any of them, but eventually that would change. So much has happened in those eleven years. I have been fortunate to work on numerous TV shows, a few films, 30+ commercials and even travel to a few places. It’s often said that it takes 10 years to be an overnight sensation. I guess things are about to get interesting.

Audition: “Toyota/NFL” @ Joe Blake Casting. This went really, really well. It’s for 16 spots!! They HAVE to bring me to callbacks. Well, they don’t have to, but it would be smart I think. I can add to this project MAN! 16 spots! I’d start specifically saving to invest in the family business or a condo/house – or both.

Oh yeah, here is the link to the CNN piece where I’m quoted. I was also quoted in an article in Back Stage…wow twice in one week! I guess I’m “moving on up!”

Thursday, July 23, 2009

Audition: “Comcast” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This one went really well. Wall-to-wall copy, but they wanted it kind of loose so I was really able to make it my own. They should bring me back.

I think I’m going to be quoted in a piece about the entertainment business in a CNN.com story on Monday the 27th.

Today is the big day. The day I start moving from my studio apartment that I’ve lived in for the past 11 years to a deeeluxe apartment in the sky!! Yup, moving on up like the Jefferson’s! This has been a long time coming. Not sure why I waited so long, but the past is the past and I’m moving forward.

I can’t believe how much crap I have gathered over the years. I am purging in a big way. Never again will I have so much stuff…at least until I have a wife and kids.

My new refrigerator was delivered this morning, but they brought me a white one instead of the black one that I wanted – I’ll give it a couple of days and see if wanna keep the white one; if not, they’ll have to come back and swap it for the correct one.

I can already feel the beginnings of a new energy and my theatrical agent said that TV is picking up in a big way.

Audition/Producers: “Brand Dead” @ Dori Zuckerman/Lorna Johnson Casting. Honestly, I didn’t feel as prepared as I should have been for this appointment, but it still went okay. I just have so much going on right now with working fulltime overnight shifts, a few auditions here and there and the moving thing has my anxiety levels going crazy. Who knows, maybe I’ll hear back from them.

Audition: “Southwest Airlines” @ Cathi Carlton Casting. I was all over the place in this audition, but since it was sort of an improv type situation it worked pretty well – a little off balance and very real. Hopefully, I’ll get a callback.

A very strange thing happened immediately after I walked out of the audition room. An actor approached me and raved and raved…and raved about the WaMu commercial that I had done last year. I mean he thought it was just the greatest piece of work. At first I just didn’t know what to say other than “thank you”, but then I shared some of how it actually came about and the 4-day shoot. It was pretty cool. I think I sometimes forget that I have actually worked in this business. I don’t really carry it on my sleeve. I just have so many other things on my mind these days, but make no mistake, I love what I do. I just love other things too.

Audition: “Lincoln” @ Terry Berland Casting. This was fun! I had a great lady playing my wife and we hit it off right away. I’m hoping it looked as good as it felt. I’m way overdue for another booking and hopefully my “KY Brand” spot will start running sooner or later.

I bought my refrigerator for my new apartment and set up delivery today. Things are really coming together for the move. I’m anxious, a little nervous, but excited. I had a very specific plan and it’s all coming together the way I’d hoped. I’m purging a lot of “stuff”. There are things I currently have that I do not want to see the light of day in my new place. I’ve also bought stuff for the new place that I’ve left in my car because I want it to be as fresh of a start as it can be. A similar thing happened when I moved to New York; I want it to be a brand new chapter – a real change. I feel it inside of me.

Audition: “Anti-Smoking PSA” @ Gabrielle Schary Casting. This was a pretty funny audition and it went well. Hopefully I’ll get a callback.

Today someone I met a few months ago looked me up on IMDB and commented about the acting credits I’ve built up over the years. She assumed that “a good amount of them” were background credits without dialogue. I wasn’t at all offended; I was intrigued by how she came up with that assessment. I asked her and she said she thought I was the type that would talk a good game, but really be full of a lot of hot air. What ??? I mean I talk a lot of smack, but it’s usually when I’m in character and just messing around. I guess she believed the character I created. I found that to be hilarious. Actually, I hadn’t spoken to her about my credits at all which is why she didn’t already know what I had or hadn’t done. I take the whole thing as a huge compliment because every single one of my credits were and are hard earned and legitimate.

I think it’s simply that’s she’s new to the game and didn’t really know that I’m not so new to the game. I also don’t think she knows many actors who have actually made a living as a professional performer for any length of time – so she assumed that I hadn’t either. I wonder how many other people might think the same thing. Who knows…

Wednesday, July 01, 2009

This morning I gave my 30-day notice that I’d be vacating my studio apartment after 11 years. It felt weird and exciting at the same time. For some reason I was a little nervous…don’t ask why. I’m nervous about a lot of things in general, but I don’t usually let it stop me. I think I get so nervous because I tend over analyze almost everything.

When I walked in the office I wasn’t sure if the property manager had already been alerted that I was leaving or not. She had; she told me the new leasing company had called and she gave me a great reference. Not sure why I was nervous about that because, yes, I deserved a great reference.

SHOOTING: “Greenpeace PSA” in Silverlake. This was fun and, again, proves to me that not everyone can do what “we” as performers do. Nope. Not everyone is interesting. Some may be interesting in a reality show sense; like watching a car accident (and yes, I do watch some of those accidents). But not everyone is interesting in a “talent” sense. The lead actor in the PSA we were shooting was organically interesting take after take, after take. A very talented man and I was honored to get to work with him.

I signed my lease for my new apartment today!! All 200 pages; well, maybe not 200 pages, but a whole lot of pages. I’m really excited.

AND
This morning, while in a comatose-like state after working last night, one of my commercial agents, Alicia, called to inform me that I booked the “Greenpeace” PSA. The pay isn’t much to speak of, but it’s for a good cause and one of the best commercial CD’s in town – which means the entire industry. Yeah, Ross Lacy is top-notch. Thanks again Ross!

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Guess what? I signed a new apartment lease today. I’m really excited. It’s so time for me to improve my life on this very basic level of being comfortable where I live. I apologize if you’ve had to listen to me go on and on about not having enough space and not having parking. It’s been a long time coming.

On the one hand I’m not thrilled about moving to West Hollywood because it reminds me of being at work. Another reason is, and this might sound silly, but some of the area is on an incline; which could get in the way of my skateboarding. Don’t get in the way of my skateboarding MAN!!! Originally, I planned to stay in the Miracle Mile area…which is pretty flat…and doesn’t remind of being at work. What I mean about “reminds me of being at work” is that I spend a lot of time being a part of “the scene” because of where I work. I don’t think there is anything wrong with “the scene” it’s just that I’m not that cool and I get overloaded by it…although it can be quite amusing at times.

That said; I’m working on trying to get cooler. Ya know; like a cool dude that goes out for happy hour and stuff like that. I need to go out more and be more social – maybe moving to West Hollywood will help. I don’t know. Why is it such a struggle for me to get out and be a part of “the scene”? Actually I do know why.

On the other hand it makes a lot of sense to live in West Hollywood because it’s convenient to the two places I go most often and still very central as far as auditioning and the business goes.
Audition: “Greenpeace PSA” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This was a fun one. It was quite confusing, but fun nonetheless. The audition was held in Studio 9 at The Casting Studios. This is significant because I know that Studio 9, at this particular facility, is a callback studio. Callback studios cost a lot more to book…so maybe it’s a callback. I had my callback game face on.

Sure enough, as soon as I walked in, there was the session runner, director, producers AND the people behind the one-way glass…yup I could see ‘em back there! So, obviously, this was a callback.

I had the dialogue down and was ready to rock n roll. I had a great partner in Blair Hickey; Blair is the owner of Casting About – a great service for actors. We usually chat when we see each other so we were very comfortable with each other going in. It went really well for both of us; so hopefully they’ll hire us both. They should! Right!?!?

Oh yeah. I noticed they were having callbacks for the “KFC” spot that I read for the other day. That’s stupid! I mean why would they have callbacks without me??? I was incredible in the audition, looked great on tape and am perfect for the spot. Geez. Some people just don’t get it…lol!

A change of pace is in store today. Yep, I drove out to Riverside, about 65 miles away from where I live, to the James Stewart Ride Day. James Stewart is a Motocross/Supercross racer. In fact, currently, he’s considered one of the best in the world, if not the best. This guy does mind-blowing stuff on a dirt bike. I am a HUGE dirt bike fan and been riding much of my life, but these days I don’t get to ride too often – only when I go home.

Anyway, he and his sponsors are hosted today where the fans can actually ride with him on a local track.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that James Stewart is Black. Yup, he’s the first African-American motorsports champion. I have to admit that I smiled as I waited in the long line of cars and trucks to get in the parking lot because I truly believe that accomplishments like this break down barriers. There are young riders who will have James Stewart as their first Motocross hero…a beautiful thing. I think it helps us all get along.

James Stewart doing his thing – Clip 1 Website

Since my motorcycle is in Virginia I decided to just take photos instead. I had a blast, rolling around in the dirt trying to get a decent shot, but had to leave early and rush back to LA for a Saturday audition. It was really great to get out of LA, if only for a few hours.

Audition: “Time-Warner Cable” @ Ross Lacy Casting. Oh no. I totally bombed this audition. I mean completely. It was two different spots; both had quite a bit of dialogue. I’m going to be honest; this is what happened. I folded under perceived pressure; it’s as simple as that. This particular session director is one of the best in town I think, he explains everything very well and if you trust him he’ll steer you in the right direction. He’s also an actor and I’ve run the camera for an audition of his before and he has an incredible naturalness to his work. As I said there was a whole bunch of dialogue and they wanted us to spot on with it because they had already had a round of callbacks and this was possibly going to book straight off the tape. Exactly as my last booking, the KY spot, straight off tape. I guess I don’t always fold under pressure…of course I don’t.

Anyway, I just couldn’t get the words out of my mouth…at all. I felt terrible. Well, not terrible, but not good at all about what I left in the room. Ya know what else happens to me? As a result of knowing a lot of what goes on behind the scenes I get out of the moment. I’m a thinker, my mind is always racing. I’m shocked that I get anything done at all. I don’t know if it’s ADD or what, but lately I’ve tried to focus more and follow a simple task through to the end.

Afterwards I stopped to say hello to a friend of mine, Maya, who was running a session in another room. She said I was right for it and asked if I wanted to read for it. She explained that it was a test-spot and all that goes with that - I was willing to take the risk.

Audition: “KFC” @ Jeff Rosenman Casting. Amazingly enough, after just having a terrible audition, I had a great one. My partner and I played off of one another very well and I’d like to think we’ll both be at callbacks. I’ll let my agents know on Monday in case they get a call about it.

Callback “Audi” @ Francene Selkirk Casting. Yes! This one went great too! I’ll leave it at that. I mean, what else can I do? I left good stuff in the room; it’s about what they want it to look like.

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Audition: “Best Buy” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. Ah man! They HAVE to bring me back for this. It went great. I’m perfect for it. I have a good callback/avail record at this office and have booked a few times…but that was then and it’s time to book again. I’m ready.

Audition/Tape “Monk” @ CFB Casting. The cool thing about this appointment was that I’ve already worked on the show. The tricky thing about this appointment is that I’ve already worked on the show.

It was cool because it’s like getting a second bite at the apple. Many of us know that, often times, if you’ve worked on a show once you won’t get to work on it again – unless it’s the same role. It was tricky because I wasn’t sure if they remembered that I’d worked on the show before. The dilemma was whether to take the credit off of my resume or not. I opted to take it off my resume. I wasn’t sure it was the right thing to do because I didn’t want it to look as though I didn’t think their show was “good enough” to be listed. Truthfully, I didn’t want anything to get in the way of possibly getting the role and I felt that having already appeared on it could do just that.

So I enter the room and OF COURSE the casting director knew I’d been on the show. He knew the season and even the name of the episode. So then I got in my head about it not being on the resume.

Before reading, the two CD’s commented on how they were a little iffy on they way the scene was written. I gotta tell you I hate those scenes that have all kinds of physical activity going on and this was one them. It didn’t go so well; which was too bad because they’ve hired me twice in the past and were rooting for me. It probably wasn’t as bad as I think, but still…I think the saving grace was that they’ve brought me in numerous times and they know it’s not always going to go great. I’m glad to know I’m still on their radar.

Audition: “Kingsford” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This was fun and went well…thankfully. I could see a callback there. The first take was really good…just not sure the camera was actually taping. The 2nd take was pretty good as well…oh yeah, I think this one is for between 4 and 9 spots. WHAT?? Yeah, that would be nice.

http://www.stephonfuller.com

Friday, June 12, 2009

Audition “Audi” @ Francene Selkirk Casting. Another really good one. How could they NOT cast me in this??? I should probably hope for a callback first. I think they should skip all that and just call a brotha to the set – I can do this! I have done this! And I’ll do it again! ACTION!

Tuesday, June 09, 2009

Audition “K-Mart” @ Ross Lacy Casting. Fun, fun fun! I even got to kiss “my wife” on the cheek – Twice! Kissing is usually fun – except when it isn’t…been there too. Anyway, it was a good time and hopefully we’ll both get callbacks – if so, I’m gonna convince her to kiss me. It shouldn’t be hard! Shit man, I did a KY commercial! She better kiss me before it hits the air and my little Black Book fills up. Just kidding I hope it airs at all…you never know…’till ya know.

It looks like the votes are in and the membership of SAG has ratified the theatrical contract that was offered by the AMPTP. Personally, I think this is terrible and a step in the wrong direction. I’m not sure why any working actor or anyone who hopes to be a working actor would support the contract, but I guess they have their reasons as I have mine. It is what it is and I have to move forward regardless on what contract we are working under.

The chances that I’ll have to join AFTRA become greater everyday – not a pleasant thought. I just don’t think they are on my side; hopefully, one day, I’ll feel different about it or maybe they won’t rep actors anymore – fat chance.

I think back at some of the decision I’ve made along the way and how they have affected me now; very subtle things in my approach to the business. I guess it’s one of the benefits of being “a thinker”, but I have to be careful of getting bogged down in that. I’ve done plenty of that, but I’ve also gotten a lot accomplished in one of the toughest businesses around. Another thing that I think has helped is that I’m doing other things these days not just “all acting, all the time”. I have to say that being on DL has been really great for me lately. I really enjoy the biz, but I really enjoy many other things too.

To say it’s been slow would be an understatement. I think this is as quiet as it’s been for me since I’ve been in Los Angeles - almost 11 years. It’s okay though, I think I’ve needed to take a break from the race. What have I been up to? I’ve been working the night job thing, trying to rest, learning my new cameras, preparing to get my motorcycle license for street riding, riding my mountain bike, preparing to move to a new apartment, etc. A new apartment - THAT is what I’m really looking forward to and new furniture and stuff…I can’t wait, I’m counting the days…

Normally, at this time of the year I’m preparing for my Summer sabbatical in Virginia Beach, but things are different right now…and for the better, meaning I’m getting better. I still would love to go home, but I’ll get there in due time; I’ve got other things on my plate.

Audition: “Bank of America” @ Dan Bell Casting. This consisted of an interview about music, if we played an instrument and/or what we liked to listen to. Pretty simple, in and out.

I voted NO on the proposed SAG Theatrical contract. I couldn’t figure out how to do anything else but vote NO. In my opinion, it’s a horrible contract and I don’t how anyone who has really read through it comes up with a YES vote. I say that with all due respect.

Fortunately, for me, I’m a vested member in the SAG Pension & Health Program; which means I’m eligible to receive a monthly pension when I retire. There is little chance of that happening under this new contract proposal under the same types of jobs that I became eligible through. Why? Because under the proposed contract residual income will be greatly reduced. It seems that a certain faction of SAG is saying that isn’t true, but I’ve experienced otherwise.

Most every year the amount to qualify for a SAG pension credit and the minimums for insurance coverage increase. It saddens me when I think of actors now that have way less of a chance of even qualifying for benefits – much less being a vested member. Although, for the vast majority of my career I have qualified for the higher Plan I insurance I only have to earn $10,200 to qualify for Plan II – which is not bad…for me. An already incredibly difficult business is looking at losing much of its middle-class. I don’t like feeling this way, but I’ve always been straight-shooting realist.

I’m not sure where voting NO is going to lead us, but I am much more sure of where a YES vote will lead. I, personally, am not in a bad position career-wise, but I’m thinking about the ones coming behind me. Just like the members did for me many decades ago. Please educate yourself and don’t let SAG sell you the VOTE YES stuff without seeing why so many actors are unhappy with the deal the AMPTP is offering.

Audition: “Verizon” @ Cathi Carlton Casting. Uhh…I’m not sure how this one went. My partner, who had the vast majority of the dialogue, was a little confused as to how the action was to play out. As a result we were a bit “clunky” to say the least. That’s too bad, especially since it shoots in Buenos Aires. I would love to go to South America!

While I was in a deep, deep sleep from working the overnight shift last night my commercial agent calls with an appointment for this afternoon. Thankfully, it was for right away because I might have fallen back asleep and missed it. I was exhausted.

Audition: “Group Health” @ Joe Blake Casting. I think this one went well and afterwards I got to catch with a friend from New York, Shawn Richardz. We’ve been in LA about the same amount of time and have been on the hustle ever since. We had some good laughs trading stories about “the game”. She is definitely covering all of her bases and making things happen. Hopefully, we’ll both get callbacks.

I also got a call from my print agent informing me that I’m on avail for the “Volvo” print ad I went in for 2 weeks ago @ Gayle Means Casting. I’m going to book a print ad one of these days. I’ve been saying that for years, but I still believe it.

I stopped by both my theatrical and commercial agencies today. I just wanted to show my face since I happened to be in the area. It was great to talk to them to get an idea how they are seeing things. Yeah, things are pretty quiet, but we are both thinking that will change as pilots orders have been put out and some shows are coming back early. I sure hope so; I’m really ready to work. It has been extremely quiet lately, but as we know, things ebb and things flow…I think I’m ebbing.

Fourteen years ago today I arrived at New York's Port Authority Terminal with my last $200 and a duffel bag of clothing…a pink duffel bag…long story. Anyway, a lot has happened in the time since. So great; some not so great. Most of it really, really good. I've had a fantastic ride. I had no idea how tough and determined I really was until I was faced with producing results with no Plan B. When I look objectively at the numbers and the odds in my business I beam with pride. No, I didn't expect to be working at a "straight job" at this point in my career, but I think I'm handling it relatively well. I mean there are worse things and, honestly, I'm thankful to have been able to find employment.

So the plan is to stay the course, but at the same time explore other areas of my life. I have so much to do in life and career and I'm looking to everyday of it Yeah, living in LA is tough for me at times, but I have a feeling that will improve greatly when I move to a new place. Ideally, I think I'm more suited to live in an area with a much smaller population and more space, but LA is where I'm at for now…and probably for the future.

Yesterday I re-opened my Roth IRA account. Yay!! And last night I attended a focus group screening that a friend from Virginia Beach directed. His name is Derrick Borte. Derrick and I rode BMX together and later were on the same championship surfing team – a long time ago in a land far, far away. Wow, those were some great times growing up in Virginia Beach.

Anyway, this is Derrick’s feature film directorial debut. The name of the film is “The Joneses” starring David Duchovny and Demi Moore. It was a rough-cut without color correction and final music, but I have to tell you I am really, really proud of Derrick. It looked great and it’s a fresh story that he also wrote. Not sure when it’ll be released, but be on the look out for it.

Print go-see “Volvo” @ Gayle Means Casting. You know how these are - quick, fast and in a hurry. Of course, I was looking at the photography equipment. I was in and out in a jiffy.

Audition “Sears” @ Plaster Casting. Wow! This same day call was my first commercial audition in 3 weeks. Seems like an eternity. Yes, it sure has been quiet ‘round these parts. It’s all good though; I have plenty of other things on my mind these days, but I wanna get back on set too or at least in the audition/callback room.

The audition went really well. It was one of those ones that seems like they could cast mostly anyone – I sure hope it’s me. There was another audition going on down the hall that I wanted to get in on so after comtemplating what to do I decided to call my agent to see what they could do. They did all I could ask; they immediately called the casting to, but didn’t get an answer. My agent told me to just ask and see if they would obliged me, but I got shut down by the woman running the lobby. In hindsight, I should have just worked my way in they way I know how, but I wasn’t feeling insanely lucky – I didn’t get seen, but I did the right thing…I think.

Photo shoot “aka Hackers”. This is a web series I supposedly have been cast in. I say supposedly, because I’m not really sure what is going on with it. My name was passed on to them from a director that I was a reader for several years ago. I didn’t audition for the project, but they have outlines of 19 webisodes and are pitching the concept to a working major film producer and a cable network. I really don’t know much more than that, if nothing else, hopefully I’ll get some cool photos out of the deal.

Wow, it has been SO slow lately. I haven’t had a commercial audition in 2 ½ weeks and my last theatrical appointment was much longer ago. Fortunately, I had a print go-see come thru.

Print go-see “Wells Fargo” @ Gayle Means Casting. Oh No! After working all night last night I totally overslept right through my appointment time. My appointment was between 2 and 2:30pm and I didn’t wake up until 3:44pm. Not good. I was so angry with myself that I didn’t even break my neck trying to get there. I waas smoldering. I took a shower, got myself ready and made my way over and hoped for the best. Fortunately it wasn’t too far from my apartment. As soon as I got there my agent called to try and find out where I was and why I didn’t make my allotted time. I was honest and told her that I work overnight, full-time and simply overslept. Usually, I set my BlackBerry alarm and it works fine, but this time my battery had run out and in my delirious state at 6:30 am forgot to put it on the charger. I got seen and it wasn’t a problem.

Later, since I’m planning to move when my current lease is up, I went to look at a new apartment. I had just parked my car and looked out the passenger window as I was rolling it up and whom do I see? The elderly couple that the husband had run over the wife on his scooter last Summer. The adventure is here. I looked over at them, not thinking they would remember me. The wife just kinda looked at me, but the husband looked and smiled…but he always smiles… I’m not sure, but it might be loose dentures that makes him smile...or maybe his wife makes him really happy. A good lady can certainly do that!

So I got out of the car and walked toward them ready to explain who I was and the husband said “Hey!” I said, “Do you remember me?” He said, “Yes”. I said, “I’m the guy from back when you had the scooter accident”. He replied, “Yes, I remember you. Thank you!” His wife still didn’t know who I was so he explained in their native language and she perked up right away and said, “Yes! Thank you!” I said to her, “Are you okay? How are you feeling?” She said that she still had a few pains from the accident but she was okay. She also laughed and told me that he is no longer allowed to drive the scooter. They are just the sweetest couple… and yes, that is proof what a good lady can do for a man. Oh yeah, and I liked the apartment I looked at next door, but it’s way early in my search so who knows where I’ll end up.

Callback “Wells Fargo” @ Alyson Horn Casting. Yes! I could book this spot! I know I can, I think I can! I am SO right for it and the “husband thing” has been working lately in commercials for me. The callback goes great! My wife was really cool; we even talked about motocross! I walked out feeling great – my work is done, now it’s up to them figure out that I’m the guy.

Today, myself and several other actors, read the scripts of students from Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles. It was a complete blast! Normally we work in whatever available space in the classroom, but this time we actually had a stage to perform on. It was so much fun and so SO important to participate. It was easy to see how much the kids appreciated our being there too. I look forward to doing it more and more in the future.

A few weeks ago I mentioned that an entertainment reporter from a major news outlet had contacted me with the idea of possibly doing a piece on “the working class actor” i.e. me. Well, I actually met him this evening and talked about a few ideas of how it might be put together. It was great to finally meet him after emailing and talking on the phone. Nice guy, very accomplished. At this point I’m not sure how it’s all going to come together, but I guess it eventually will.

Audition “McDonald’s” @ Ross Lacy Casting. Uh, this one went okay. Not great. I had to fake drinking a cup of coffee while vacuuming – not so much. Don’t think a callback is coming from that flat performance.

Audition “Wells Fargo” @ Alyson Horn Casting. Hmmm…I’m not sure how this one went. I was a little confused by the instructions. They had me paired up with a wife and we were supposed to tell a story about home improvements, but the story was supposed to be true. Huh? I just met this woman; we have no truth. I wasn’t sure what to do so I made up my own story, independent of her, but it wasn’t true either. The story, in itself, went well, but I’m not sure it’s what they were looking for.

I told them I was a condo owner and that an improvement I was REALLY looking forward to was building a bar…for all of my top-shelf liquor. What?!? I don’t own a condo and I’ve never had any top-shelf liquor or any liquor for that matter…in my life…not even a beer. The good thing is I was totally believable and passionate about it, but I was a confused abut whether I did the right thing or not. It wouldn’t surprise me if I get a callback…or not.

Audition: “Secret Project” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. While I was a rehearsing the dialogue for the audition a guy approached me and said, “I know you, we’ve worked together”. I said, “Really, what did we work on?” He replied, “No, maybe it was an audition”. I said, “I don’t know, I think I’d remember you”. Of course, like anyone else, I don’t remember everyone I’ve met and/or worked with over the years, but I definitely didn’t recognize this actor. He said, “No, we’ve definitely worked together”. I started to feel a little embarrassed at this point and right then he said, “OH!, I know what it is…I’ve been editing someone’s reel and you are on it”. Turns out it was a commercial I did several years ago directed by the infamous and legendary Joe Pytka. He and I ended up auditioning together and it went great…nice guy.

Today is weird day in my acting journey. Well, not like crazy weird just a little…slightly…weird. It was 8 years ago today that I left my job waiting tables on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. It was always, and continues to be, a huge personal victory for me to have made a living solely as an actor for such a period of time. For the time being that period is over; I am not currently making a living solely as an actor. Yes, the majority of my income is that of actor, but not every single penny like it was for seven years.

It would be easy to say this is a bitter-sweet anniversary and ignore the this date; or even be upset by the fact I’m working another job to supplement and modulate my income, but it isn’t that at all. Especially a position that happens to be at the same place and position I resigned from many years before. It’s simply another challenge being thrown at me and I must say I’m handling it well. No, things aren’t perfect, but I’m not doing bad considering the economic climate and industry turmoil we are currently experiencing. I continue to feel like an exception to the rule(s). I view the decision to rejoin the regular workforce as the best and single most important decision I made in the year of 2008 - I kid you not.

Yeah, besides modulating my income it has given a much, much needed break from the business side of the business. I don’t mean “the business” as in the day-to-day hustle; I mean it in the more serious sense of the future of the business on a career level. We are at a real turning point and things, I predict, will be different in the future. Frankly, paying so much attention to what was going was becoming a real drag for me; so I needed to step back – and I did in a really big way.

I’ve never stopped auditioning or pursuing my career, I’ve just been keeping a very low profile. It’s different for me to be kinda MIA, but I have to say that it’s great to do other things I like to do besides so much acting-related stuff. I’m really excited about my new cameras and the notion of becoming a better photographer. I’m not looking to do it professionally; I just want to be able to one day take great photos of my wife and kids – hopefully I’ll have one and some. So things are good, very different from a year ago, but good nonetheless. I have a lot to be thankful for and I am.

After working the overnight shift last night and getting, not nearly enough sleep this morning, I drug my delirious self out of bed and skateboarded to CBS Television Studios to attend the SAG Rally. I always hope to see more of my peers on the front lines, but sadly I usually don’t. I think the main reason is, and I’ll go out on a limb here, that most actors aren’t aware how these contract negotiations really affect their bottom line. Trust me when I say that this “acting thing”, as in making a living from it, is being seriously threatened by the studios.

One of the many goals of the studios is to end residuals or at least curtail them a great deal. If we, as actors, lose residuals we lose a major way of funding our pension & health plan. As a 12-year member of SAG with 11 years of pension credits earned that is not good news.

Many of the studios are airing their reruns online. Currently, they are not paying residuals for those reruns. Mostly, those reruns have commercial breaks in which leads me to believe that they are selling advertising. At the same time reruns on broadcast television are becoming less and less frequent. This is a serious issue for actors.

So, in the end, it was a slightly depressing outing, but I felt great about attending. After all SAG has done a lot for me and I need to do what I can to give a bit back.

Audition: “Subway” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. Another one that I think I’m really right for, plus it went pretty well. I often get callbacks at this office so hopefully the trend will continue.

Callback: “Volkswagen” @ Ross Lacy Casting. Yes, I got a callback and it went great. I knew the dialogue and had the right vibe for it. When my partner and I entered the room the creative team was having a little bit of a “behind the scenes” conversation about what to do in the spot from a production/casting point of view. Not stuff that actors typically hear, but having sat in on some of those talks both commercially and theatrically I picked up on it right away. I have to say that sometimes I think it might be better if I knew a little less about the process.

Anyway, the read went well. I think my partner and I played off of each other well. I was the straight man of the duo and he was more the “larger than life” element. When we finished one gentleman on the creative team asked me if I was the guy from the 1988 film “Diehard”; “Argyle” the limo driver. People have asked me that since the film was first released more than 20 years ago. I’ve even had people not believe me when I’ve told them I’m not him. I must admit that when I saw the film I could absolutely see why some people thought I was him. We are both of similar build, speak in a familiar cadence and look a little alike, but I’m not him…I swear.

Audition: “Volkswagen” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This was fun, loose and I’m perfect for it. I really felt that I found “my voice” during the audition. That’s something I’ve been working on lately is really delivering “me”. You’d think that would be an easy thing to do, but I have always been hit or miss with actually accomplishing it. Callbacks are tomorrow and I hope to be there.

After I finished shooting the “KY Brand” commercial last week one of the product directors gave me his business card and said the he’d send out some products for me. I emailed him and less than 24 hours later my care package arrived. I guess I should take that as a sign…of something.

The goods!

Audition “USPS” @ Ross Lacy Casting. This seems like a pretty big campaign with a print element to it as well. It went okay; I was a little caught up in feeling that I wasn’t dressed properly. I’m not sure when callbacks are, but I’m not expecting to be there, BUT stranger things have happened.

I spoke to the entertainment reporter this afternoon. I am completely blown away at how my writing this thing – My Long Ass Bio – has gained any amount of interest. Yes, I say “Bio” because I’d never heard of blogging when I started writing it. I’m sure someone was using the term, but I’d never heard it. Personally, I’m still not too much of a fan of the reverse-chronological order of a blog; I prefer reading my bio that reads forward like a book, but I enjoy maintaining both formats.

It’s funny because I’ve always been intimidated by writing because I have such a hard time focusing, I don’t type well and dyslexia makes updating quite the challenge. That said, I really, really enjoy doing it and am so glad that I have kept up with it. Hopefully, someday I’ll have children and they will be able to read it and get a true sense of what their father experienced while pursuing his career.

I admittedly had a smile on my face after finishing the call with the reporter because, I mean, he must think I have something to say…I think I do. Right? I guess.

This morning the weather has warmed up to a whopping 18 degrees. 18 degrees! Nice! Anyway, I have a 7am pickup at the hotel for a 9:30 flight back to LA. While driving through Brooklyn, looking out the window at the huge metropolis also know as New York City it seemed so long ago that it was where I was living. Time does fly by.

I’m happy that I actually got to shoot the commercial. I guess that means that I’m about 96% of the way to what I hope to be a 100% experience. It’s already been quite incredible whether the spot runs or not.

I arrived at JFK early so I asked about getting on the 8:30am flight instead of the 9:29, but it was completely full. The lady was wondering why they system didn’t charge me $15 for my checked bag. She was nice, but I don’t think she expected me to be flying first-class – that’s why my bag was free. That’s what she gets for assuming.

On the return flight I sat next to Randall Park, who’d I’d hadn’t met previously, but we ran into each other at the hotel a couple of nights prior. I had forgotten about how I was going to get home from LAX until I was almost to baggage claim. Right at that exact moment I looked up and saw a man with a sign that said “S. Fuller” and next to him was a woman with a sign that said “Park”.

They were the drivers to put the last touches on the last leg of our trip back home. I should always travel like that!

So I arrived at my apartment, took my suitcase upstairs and within 30 seconds was on my way to the casting office of the director meeting that had been cancelled. I knew I wouldn’t see the director, but I wanted to stop by and say hello anyway.

So there you have it; it was an incredible trip. Everything worked out perfectly. The only thing that might have made it better would have been if I was dating someone I would have taken them with me by requesting two coach tickets instead of one first-class ticket. Cool, so now I can add New York, to my list of Madrid, Miami & Tokyo to places I’ve traveled for work. I think next I want to go to South America, Australia or Africa…or downtown LA…I just wanna get another job, LOL!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention. This morning I received an email from an entertainment reporter from a major news outlet with an interview request. Ironically it’s the same news outlet that is my homepage on my internet browser. To be honest, I almost deleted it because I didn’t think it was anything of importance. In hindsight, the subject line was very clear as to what they request was pertaining to. I take that as a sign that I need to slow the heck down and pay more attention and not try to do 1,000 things at once – attention deficient gets in my way sometimes. I’m working on focusing better.

Okay, it’s really cold. This morning it’s 12 degrees. Twelve degrees?? Why? What is the reason for such cold temperatures? How did I even live in New York and brave those conditions? I don’t know, maybe because I grew up in Virginia and we had 4 real seasons too.

I’m chillin’ today; I decided to stay an extra day and hope that I didn’t miss anything back in LA. When production called initially, before they booked my plane ticket, I asked them to schedule me that way so I wouldn’t have to pay to change the ticket myself.

I caught up with my friend, Genine, who lives uptown. While having lunch with her my agent calls with an appointment for tomorrow in LA. It’s scheduled about 20 minutes after I’m supposed to land…hmm, not sure I can make that. Actually, it’s a meeting with the director and not an appointment to read material. It’s for Debra Zane’s office and I have a bit of a history with them.

My agent, Caleigh, said not to worry about coming back early and that they were going to send my demo reel over instead. Okay, but of course, I’m still thinking about getting on the red-eye tonight even though I really don’t want to. Or maybe I can get on an earlier flight in the morning.

Later I caught up with another friend, former LA-based actress turned New York-based Tanika Brown-Mckelvy. We had a great time catching up and laughing. She’s definitely doing her thing and not wasting time getting in the mix there. She’s even working with some of the top-notch commercial agents I worked with when I was in based there. It’s interesting to watch her use LA experience and apply it to now being New York based. Usually it’s the other way around. Good luck Tanika!

Last night, in the lounge at The W, I ran into a friend who lives right down the street from me in Los Angeles. It was crazy, we hadn’t seen each other for several months and we run into each 3,000 miles away. Her name is Celines Toribio she is doing her thing too. Before that I had run into fellow actor Christopher King who I met when I lived in New York. He then moved to LA for a few years and is now back in New York. Funny enough, ironically the friend that was with him had auditioned 3 times for the “KY Jelly” commercials too – small world.

Monday, March 02, 2009

My 6:30 pick-up to take me to the location in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Stages was running late due to snowy road conditions. It was FREEZING; I mean colder than I've been in years. We got about 8 inches of snow and it was in the 20’s temperature-wise.

I arrive on set, get set-up in my room, order an omelette and right away I'm called to wardrobe. This part trips me out every time it happens. Within 30 seconds of entering the wardrobe room with 3 women I've never met I've stripped down to my underwear. There aren’t places a man could pull that off in “real life” without getting arrested.

It’s really weird because I’ve always been very self-conscious about my body. Just like I was when I decided to wear a tank-top in the audition. I was self-conscious then too, but I wanted the job and was fortunately able to not be “self-aware”.

I’m a small, slight dude; always have been. So, of course, growing up I was constantly reminded how skinny I was and that I had a bird chest – ya know, all things kids say. The saving grace was I was a bad mofo on my BMX bike. Hells yeah!! Haha!

Just last week I was getting a new battery put in my watch and the jeweler thought the watch was for a woman. What? So I have skinny wrist. Leave my a** alone! Stop abusing me, LOL! Don’t get me started on my little ears….whatever.

So, Melissa, the wardrobe lady gives me 8-10 different tops and pants to try on – including a my own tank top and boxer shorts. I was really, REALLY hoping that I wasn’t going to be on national television wearing a tank top and boxers.

So I’m chilling in my room and the moment of truth comes. It’s Melissa with my approved wardrobe and you guessed it – they chose my own tank-top from the audition and boxer shorts. Why?!?! A few minutes later she came back with these super-duper-slim-sorta-lyrcra like booty-ass shorts for me to wear under the boxers. I’m like, “What the heck are these?” Are they for my wife? I mean I was already wearing black briefs under the boxers.

At this point I had to put my game face on. The choice had been made for me to be in shorts and a tank so I had to suck it up and be strong. I was ready to protest and go commando and shit, but thought that might not be a good decision. I’m just kidding – sorta. In the end; I decided to keep my briefs on and wear the super-duper-slim-sorta-lyrcra like booty-ass shorts over my briefs.

Me wearing super-duper-slim-sorta-lyrcra like booty-ass shorts-they even let me keep them.

Can I talk about my wife in the spot? I was so curious as to who my wife would be. I could have just asked production, but I decided to wait and be surprised. I was looking around on the plane, but figured she could be based in New York. Sure enough, she is based in Brooklyn. She is: Broadway Actress-Singer–Songwriter-Musician-Playwright-Harvard Grad and all-around cool sista Eisa Davis! How did I get so lucky to share the stage with this one? My blessings continue…

The Director, David Shane from New York-based production house O Positive, was a complete pleasure to work with too - an actor’s director. Instead of saying “Action!”; he actually said “Acting”. How cool is that?

Usually, as actors, we hear very little about the behind the scenes part unless we book and even then you may not hear much. They were auditioning for this series of spots in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. I only auditioned once, but everyone else I spoke with went in 2, 3 even 4 times. It’s always fascinating to me as to how these things come together.

We did take after take. After take after take. I think we did more takes than all of my other commercials combined. Some of that may have to do with the fact that we were shooting on video instead of film. I hope they got what they needed to make it right…I think they did. Most of it was Eisa and I sitting next to each other on the bed, but there was another part that was a little…more interesting.

So there I was in a tank top and boxers; her in a little – ya know the little things women wear to bed that they look oh so fine in. I’m sorry I just love women…they’re just cool…and most everything about them.

Anyway, we are lying in bed as husband and wife and it’s just weird, fun, but weird, but that‘s the gig as an actor…thankfully, lol! Me, the skinny bird-chested brotha, with the wrists of a woman never expected to get acting work and be less than fully dressed. So it’s a real head trip for me. In the WaMu spot I felt that I was a little bit on display physically too. It kinda makes me feel that I should take going to the gym and staying in shape a little more serious.

I’ve been asked what it’s like to be in a bed scene with a woman. Of course the first question is “Is it exciting?” LOL! Sure, it’s exciting, but not THAT kind of exciting. I mean, I’m a professional and it’s important for your partner to be able to be professional as well. BUT with that said, I can see how things…enough. I’ve only done it one other time; meaning a scene in the bed with a woman – a revisit.

Eisa and I were wrapped, had lunch with the crew and I was taken back to Manhattan. I was completely exhausted, maybe a little jet-lagged and collapse in my hotel room. I woke up later and walked around the City and got on the subway to explore.

Sunday, March 01, 2009

It’s 5:15 in the morning and I’m getting in the shower to prepare for my trip to New York. I didn’t get in the bed until 4:45 so I’m dragging a little. I have to learn to sleep more! I want to sleep more; I’m just always doing something. The car service to LAX, provided by the production company, calls at 5:45 for a 6am pickup to let me know they are downstairs waiting.

There were a few construction detours on the way to LAX and I guess the driver was trying to make up for lost time. By the time I got to the airport I was nauseous from being tossed around in the back – ugh! Lots of jack-rabbit starts, quick stops and swerving left to right is no fun in the back seat of a Lincoln Town Car.

With the exceptions of going through security and customs I really enjoy flying and being at the airport – especially flying for free. I’m a people watcher that’s generally more comfortable watching people than being watched by people and airports are great for people watching.

So I get checked in and, to my surprise, learn that I don’t have to pay the $15 for my checked bag because I’m flying first-class – cool, saves me $30. I was aware that the East Coast had a was due for bit of weather, but the gentleman sitting next to me said New York could get a up to 12 inches of snow. This was really good news. Other than skiing/snowboarding I hadn’t been in snow for a long time so I welcomed the inclement weather.

We landed at JFK about 20 minutes early, but waited 45 minutes on the tarmac for a plane to clear our gate; then another 45 minutes to get our bags. The car service called as soon as I landed to let me know they were on time, but I told them it was going to be a while. I was hoping the driver wouldn’t leave but I guess delays are a part of what they do.

I guess this is my ride!

I finally got to my hotel, The W - Lexington & 49th, as the snow flurries began to fall. It was great! After getting settled I put on my winter coat and went for a walk around my old stomping grounds as the flurries turned to snow.

Sixth Ave & 50th

Walking through Times Square was a really neat thing because I used to live in the neighborhood when I first moved to the city; 450 W 46th St. between 9th & 10th in Hell’s Kitchen. I used to walk through Times Square on my way to walk everyday.

I remember Times Square seeming so crazy and insane 14 years ago. I also remember the open air drug market, in the park ‘round ‘da way on my street; and the prostitutes, LOL! Wow, it was a little much for a youngster from the suburbs of Virginia Beach, but I handled it well. I would walk through Times Square at 2am on my way home from work vowing to one day make sense of it all. By that, I mean not feeling so overwhelmed by the City.

Truthfully, I didn’t have time to be overwhelmed because I moved to New York with $200 to my name. I had to hit the streets to make it happen or go to Plan B. Plan B was also to make it happen. Besides, how overwhelmed could I be making $3 an hour plus tips? Mo money, Mo problems. No money, No problems. I didn’t have any problems.

I remember back in 2002 seeing myself in a commercial on the Wrigley's Jumbotron in Times Square. I was so excited about that; especially that I only found out because a fellow actor saw it and called to tell me about it. So being back in NYC for work is a dream come true and I expect to do it many more times in the future.

Me in front of me on big screen - 2002
Anyway, my frigid self made it back to the hotel to get rested for a 6:30 pick-up to take me to the location.

Yesterday morning I was asleep after working the previous overnight shift. My phone rang and I saw that it was my commercial agency. I really, really hoped it wasn’t the type of news I got after my last commercial booking. That was not good news.

I retrieved the voicemail with a slight cringe having no idea what to expect. It was Jamie, one of the assistants, from the agency. Right away I felt that things couldn’t be too bad because if it was it would have been the voice of Samantha, the agent handling the booking.

The next thing that happened was that Jamie took a pause before saying whatever it was she had to say. That pause didn’t feel good. My heart was racing – I mean RACING. The next word I understood her to say was “Contract”. My split second reaction was “NOOOOO!” The next word after that was “Expired”. LOL!! I’m thinking my contract for the “KY Jelly” commercial has expired and I’ve been replaced; just like the “Cheetos” commercial! Crazy I know, but after all the weirdness I’ve had with bookings in recent years I’m a little edgy okay, LOL!

Anyway, it turns out that it was all great news. Jamie was informing me that my commercial contract with the agency had expired and that I needed to set up an appointment to resign a new 3 year agreement. That’s good right? I’ve been with KSR (formerly KSA), one of the top commercial houses in Los Angeles, for almost 11 years and they want to keep the relationship alive. That is a reason to smile and not panic.

With that, it looks like I am really flying to New York early tomorrow morning; it’s actually going to happen. I’m really, really excited.

Okay, I admit that every time my cell phone rings I think it’s somebody giving me the news that someone changed their mind and I’m no longer a part of the production. Not the greatest feeling, but it’s all part of it I guess. Jobs come and go. My last commercial booking came and went without me getting to shoot it; this one will be different.

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Geez, I’m pretty worn out from working last night, but as I expected my phone started ringing very early with the logistics of travel and the shoot in New York.

I really hope this happens. What I mean by that is booking the job is not always enough. Just because you book a commercial doesn’t mean you will get to shoot the commercial. Just because you shoot a commercial doesn’t mean you’ll be in the final edit. Just because you are in the final edit doesn’t mean it will run more than once. Not trying to sound pessimistic, but I’m a realist and these are all situations I’ve experience first hand in the commercial and theatrical world.

Of course, way more often than not my bookings have proceeded as scheduled, but in recent years I’ve experienced more than my share of weirdness. Usually, I try to look at it as the more I book the more likely weird things will happen…and that weirdness goes both ways; for better or for not so much better. Anyway, I should get my travel itinerary tomorrow so I know when, where and for how long. I’m also glad to say that my manager was great in making my missing work no big deal.

Audition: “AirTran” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. This went really well and I’m perfect for it. I usually get callbacks at this office and I hope to get one for this.

While driving on I-10, at on my way home from the audition my phone rang. The logo of KSR, my commercial agency, came on the screen. My first thought that there was a problem with the equipment at the audition and I needed to go back and audition again. That happened once at the office and I think about it every time I’m there.

I retrieved the voice mail message and mostly expected to hear the voice of Leah informing me that “we’ll get ‘em next time”; her way of telling me that I’ve been released from another avail. I hear that sooo often…it’s getting old.

Instead I heard the voice of Samantha, who actually I don’t think I’d ever spoken to on the phone. Samantha is my newest agent at KSR – she started about 9 months ago. The first word I remember hearing from Samantha was “congratulations….”. Yup, she then proceeded to tell me that I booked the KY Jelly” commercial!!! Right at that moment my life went into slow motions at 65 miles per hour. I couldn’t believe it. Like seriously, I couldn’t speak I was so stunned.

I got off the highway at the La Cienega exit, pulled into the Del Taco parking lot and sat in my car - speechless. It was about 5 minutes before I could even get myself together to call Samantha back to get the points of the deal. It was the first job I had booked through Samantha and I think I made it seem like it was my first booking ever - not commercial booking #35 or so for me.

It felt great to feel that way. No, I didn’t cry, but I was maybe a little misty-eyed…a little. She told me I’d be leaving for New York in a couple of days and production would call me directly to set everything up. Wow.

I always told my managers at work that I’d do whatever I could for them as far as filling in last minute or just being generally flexible. I also told them that I knew I would eventually have very last minute things come up in my career and I’d need their support as well. I guess I’ll see how this one works out.

hmm…still no news on the avail. Well, since this spot is traveling to New York I’m beginning to think that maybe they’ve moved on without me. I hope not, but who knows, maybe I’m still in the running. I hope so.

The last thing I want to do is totally get used to being released from these avails. I mean, “it is what it is”, ya know. It means that I am doing something right – a lot right in fact. I’m not at all defeated about it; I know that I have to just stay the course and keep it moving. I’m pretty good at that.

Oh yeah, “no news, is good news”. Right?

No news about the “K-Y Jelly” commercial. I’ll take that as good news.

Thursday, February 19, 2009

Yes! This morning my commercial agency called to inform me that I’m on avail for the “K-Y Jelly” commercial. That is great news! I would love to go to New York to shoot it. I never would have believed that in 10+ years in Los Angeles I have yet to get back to New York to work on a project. That needs to change and soon. Well, when I think about it; I’m happier being able to say that I’ve been to Tokyo & Madrid since I had never been to those places.

Audition: “Dave & Buster’s” @ Ross Lacy Casting. Not so much; I don’t think I’ll be moving to the next step on this one.

Audition: “K-Y Jelly” @ Joe Blake Casting. This was a first time call straight to callbacks. As soon as I arrived I was paired up with “my wife”. Let me tell you this woman was absolutely beautiful. So I’m there in my pajama bottoms and a tank top feeling a little weird. Moments later me and this stunning creature are cozied up rehearsing our lines. The scenarios in the different commercials were all about making love and using K-Y products. It was interesting to say the least. I know I had fun; I think she did too.

By the time we actually auditioned my partner and I were a well oiled machine. It was a straight to callback session, but only the camera operator/session director was in the room. The director was on a monitor in front of us in New York. He spoke to me as though we had worked together before, but we hadn’t. No matter, it felt like there was a bit of a connection – even from 3,000 miles away. Anyway, the session went really well and I was on my way.

Man, I would love to book this spot - KY?? Yeah! That's not like saying "I just booked a Burger King" spot or an "IBM" commercial. Saying "KY Jelly"!! Hell yeah, that'll give me some much needed street cred; ya know some edge.

Audition: “Fred & Vinnie” @ Brad Gilmore Casting. Eh, this went okay. Well, maybe less than okay. I felt like I just went in and did a bunch of stuttering. “Next!” Is probably what the CD said when I left.

Audition: “Dr Scholl’s” @ Ross Lacy Casting. Yeah, I too get tired of writing about how well my auditions are going, but not translating into bookings. Well here’s another one. Actually, I blew the first take (it’s ADD related, gotta work on that), but we did two more takes and they were great fun. Ross’ is another office that I have a good record of callbacks, avails and bookings…and avail releases too, BUT let’s not talk about that – just bookings!

A couple of nights ago I attended a mixer for CastingAbout. I have to say that I really like these guys and this company. They just seem like good people, plus they provide a tremendous service for keeping up with casting directors, associates, assistants, TV/Film projects and the status of them, etc. They’ve just partnered with Breakdown Services which I assume helps them get the word out.

I’ve always had to use several different sources to maintain my database of the casting community. It takes a lot of work, but I have been very successful at it. Keeping track of the casting community is a tough thing to perfect, but CastingAbout makes it a little bit easier and more informative – especially keeping track of associates and assistants as they move from office to office. And they plan to cover New York in the near future.

Audition “ACE Hardware” @ Craig Colvin Casting. Simple stuff; they could cast so many different types in this spot; including me. I have a pretty good callback ratio at this office so hopefully I’ll be there whenever they are.

Callback: (on a Sunday) “Verizon FIOS” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. Okay, this was pretty funny. Since I came up with the brilliant assessment that my glasses are holding me back in every thing I do in life I decided to go to the callback wearing contact lenses. I figured that way it might be easier to see my eyes and make “the connection”.

First, I have to say it’s great to run into so many actors that I’ve seen on the circuit for years and years some even going back to my New York days. Even though we are all competing for a job that could pay tens of thousands of dollars there is a great sense of camaraderie in the air. Make me proud to be a professional in this field.

So it’s my turn in the room with the director and the rest of the creative team. Everyone seems to be nice and the director was especially friendly. There were two different spots being casts and after the first take the director asked me if I had the glasses that I wore in the first audition with before with me??? I told him “yes, and that they were in my jacket in the lobby”.

Typically, the answer to that would be “oh don’t worry, it’s no big deal”, but no; this director was willing to wait to see those particular frames. So I run out to the lobby to get my glasses and put them on and I quickly figured out that contact lenses and glasses…on the same eyes…and at the same time do not work so well together. I didn’t want to take the time to remove my contacts and hold up the session that was already running behind schedule.

My vision with glasses and contacts was crazy! But I made it work for me; it was almost like I had a secret. In fact I did have a secret – my secret was that I couldn’t see SHIT!! Thankfully, I knew the dialogue.

Anyway, I felt that the callback went well and the director seemed particularly interested in what I had to offer, but he might have been that way with everyone.

Audition “Verizon FIOS” @ Kathy Knowles Casting. YES! I always have great auditions at this office! Well, not always, but more often than not it goes really well and I get a callback or and/or avail. I hope this is another one.

Tonight in my acting class I was watching myself on tape and noticed that it was quite difficult to see my eyes through my glasses. It felt a bit disconnected to be honest. I wonder if that could be helping me get released from some of the gigs I’ve been close to booking…an interesting thought. I like my current frames, but they do give me a headache at times. I’m not too much of a fan of contact lenses on a regular basis since getting an eye infection back in New York. I don’t ever wanna go through that again.

Audition/tape “Castle” @ Donna Rosenstein Casting. I was really happy with how this one went and I think I’m right for it. More importantly, I feel that they’ll keep bringing me in for whatever they are casting and that’s of vital importance for the big picture of my career.

This morning I did a reading of scripts of students in a screenwriting program at Venice High School. It was a complete blast! I had been wanting to do something like this for a while and finally saw an opportunity and jumped on it. I’ll definitely do more in the future.

Audition: “Dairy Queen” @ [skirts] casting. Yeah, this one went pretty well; not great, but well enough. I think I might be too young though.

Callback: “Planter’s Peanuts” @ Digital Dogs Casting. This was a good one – fun too. It’d be nice to book something soon – practically anything would be cool.

Audition: “Glee” @ UDK Casting. Yes! I like going in on these recurring guest-star roles; there is just more to do and more fun to have. I read it once; got a slight re-direct and did it a second time. It went very well and the casting director was very complimentary of my work – not just this time, but every time I read for him. That is a great place to be especially in that particular office.

Honestly, me and my agent think I play a little too young for the role, but she submitted me anyway and I got an appointment. After reading the casting director explained that he didn’t know if the role would remain in the script as it had been cut before and put back in. At any rate it was a great showing. After the audition I went to my acting class, which went really well.

Audition: Planter’s Peanuts” @ Digital Dogs Casting. This was a very last minute audition that I was fortunately able to make. It went really well too. The was a little bit of improv at the very end of the second take and a “bad word” slipped out. Hey, I was in the moment. No, I don’t make it a habit of cursing in auditions, but it there it was. I doubt it matters one way or the other, but I think they should bring me in for callbacks regardless. Yeah!

Audition: “UPS” @ ASG Casting. This was pretty simple and it went well. While there I was told that my footage from a non-paying promo I had auditioned for a couple of months ago is going to be used for the project. I hardly remember the project, but it’s usually good to book something.

Callback: “Roundtable Pizza” @ [skirts] casting. I need more callbacks to go like this one; that way I’d be able to get that house I want to buy. My partner and I were both a little confused when we entered the audition room because we didn’t hear all of the group explanation but we just trusted it, stayed in the moment and let things unfold. I need to work on that staying in the moment stuff.

I left the audition feeling great about what I left in the room and several hours later I got the call informing me that I had been placed on avail. This booking would be a great way to start off the year.

Wow; what a historic day today was. I’m glad that I’m old enough to truly understand the significance of what has taken place. While I don’t believe that Barack is magic; I do believe that he will have positive impact on this country and the world in this time of great need. I also believe it could be a good thing for someone like myself in my career.

Audition: “Roundtable Pizza” @ [skirts] Casting. This went really well; callbacks are this week.

Shooting “Grey’s Anatomy” @ ABC/Prospect Studios.

I’m tired, really tired. I got off work early this morning; my call time is early this morning.

I’ve been running like crazy for the past several weeks including a little travel and I’m going home for thanksgiving next week. It’s all good though ALL GOOD; I didn’t move to LA to watch paint dry. So I’m not complaining; I’m just voicing stuff.

So I get to the studio and my little trailer and wardrobe and contract are ready and waiting for me. Shortly afterwards the 2nd 2nd AD leads me into the hair and make-up trailer. The first people I see are Sarah Oh and Ellen Pompeo in their chairs preparing for the day of shooting. The two ladies in charge of hair take a quick look at me and say ‘Ha! You’re easy and perfect; see you on set”. Then I go to make up and she takes a look at my skin and says “oh you’re fine, I’ll get you later”. I’m done; free to go back to my trailer to finish filling out my contract.

30 or so minutes later there is a knock on my door and it’s time to go to set for a quick rehearsal. I walk out to the golf cart and Sarah Oh is getting into the front seat while I get in behind the driver. Sarah turns around to introduce herself and says, “we’ve met before…haven’t we?” I was really caught by surprise, but yes, we had met before – we worked on “Arli$$” together on February 6th, 2001 @ the Andrita Stages. I could not believe that she remembered me.

Then the “Grey” in “Grey’s Anatomy” – “Meredith Grey” series lead Ellen Pompeo slipped into the back seat beside me and introduced herself. Sandra immediately told her that we’d work together, years ago and we made the short trip to the stage to rehearse.

We did a quick blocking run-through and then again and one more time before 2nd team took our places to do the camera stuff…I even had a stand-in. I was back in the trailer for a bit and then the call for make-up came. Shortly after that we headed back to the stage to shoot the scene.

It was fun! It’s always fun. I really look forward to the day when I’m acting on a daily basis as a regular on a show…it’s got to be one of the best jobs in the world.

After about 3 or 4 different camera setups we were finished and I was wrapped for the day. Success! It was a smaller role, but I’m thrilled to have booked it. The really funny part is that 2-3 years ago I may have decided to not go in on it, but times change.

Check this out. On a medical show like Grey’s Anatomy one would imagine that they would go through scores of lab coats over 5 seasons. Right? Random tech here, random doctor there. I thought it was interesting that my lab coat had my character’s name embroidered on it and not on a removable tag. I wonder if they do that for all characters because, I assume, that after embroidering a lab coat they couldn’t use it again for another character. That would be a lot of lab coats. That makes me wonder if maybe my character might return to the show in the future…hmmm. Who knows, I sure don’t…one can only hope.

Audition: “Advair” @ Gabrielle Schary Casting. This one didn’t go so well; there was a ton of dialogue. It was going well in rehearsal, but not so well in the room.

I started a new 8-week on-camera acting class with Leslee Dennis this afternoon and I think I’m going to like it. I’m also looking into a photography class and another class after I’m finished with this one.

Aww man! My agent called with an appointment for “CSI: Miami” @ Nan Dutton Casting and I’m still in Virginia on vacation. I’ve been trying to get in this office for years and I hated missing this particular one. The sides were a lot of fun and I would have loved to get a chance to flex with the character…oh well hopefully they’ll bring me in another time.
